·2 years agoI have twice had the entire contents of custom lists schwacked by deleting the same items from the primary Watchlist. If I select an item that is in both the watchlist and one or more custom lists, deleting the item from the watchlist deletes it from everywhere, with no warning/reminder from the system (unlike deleting from a custom list, which does offer the user a choice).
Three recommendations:
1) Deleting an item, or multiple items at once, from the main watchlist should have no effect on the contents of any/all custom lists, unless the user consents to the main list deletion applying to all lists. I know, implementing this pipe dream would give a user the ability to create an infinite number of watchlist-equivalents, so i'm sure ebay won't go for it. If they would just significantly increase the capacity of watchlists, say to 1000 items per user, all of this problem would likely go away for 98% or more of all users. Maybe restrict giving the higher watchlist capacities to the most active users - volume of buying and selling earns privileges.
2) Since ebay will never implement #1, the attempt to delete one or multiple items from the main watchlist should first require acceptance of a pop-up prompt that ensures the user knows that he is deleting from ALL lists. This is not just on a single item deletion attempt, but also when a user selects multiple items in the main list, hits delete, and they're gone from everywhere.
3) I've been on ebay for almost 30 years and have NEVER seen an instruction or pop-up or equivalent that explains that all custom lists are simply subsets of the single main watchlist. Without this education, I suspect there are zillions of ebayers out there who don't understand that there is one main watchlist and that custom lists have no effect on the main list's contents or capacity. In other words, I don't think there is widespread understanding that if an item is in any custom list(s), it MUST also be in the main list.

That is not the case. Items do not need to be on the Watch List to be on a different list.
The current issue is that if an item is on the Watch List and another list, deleting the item from the Watch List now will delete it from the other list as well, so care must be taken when deleting an item from the Watch List to add the item back to the other list.

·2 years agoYes, agreed, my bad. Overthought the issue in my haste to throw in my .02. Regardless, ebay could make this easier on everybody, if they wanted to.

·2 years agoIt actually used to be possible to delete from the (main) watchlist without simultaneously removing the saved item(s) from a custom list until earlier this year. I cannot pinpoint the exact date of the change because, as usual with ebay, it came with zero warning. Nor can I assess the reason why ebay made the change, but it clearly has no real sense how its customers, specially auction buyers, use its site.
A custom list is above all a reference list. No emails are issued from a custom list to alert me that an auction is about to end, for instance; that only applies to items in the main watchlist. And once an auction is over, it makes sense to clean up the main watchlist, which otherwise would quickly get unwieldy as it fills up with items from future auctions. The reference list is there to remind me, as I prepare for a new auction, that six plus months ago, the item I am bidding on today sold for x amount.
There is a roundabout method, as pointed by eburtonlab, but it's clumsy to say the least. It involves opening the listing in a separate tab, going back to the watchlist, deleting the item from that list, then returning to the listing in the new tab and adding it to a custom list of my choice. Worse yet, this can only be done if the listing is still active; once it's sold, my only current option if I want to keep the auction outcome as a reference is to leave it in the main watchlist permanently. Which sucks.
At this point, this is the only solution I have found, and it's bound to remain the only one because I doubt that ebay, where the staff always seem otherwise engaged, pays any attention to these threads.

·2 years agoSame issue here. My problem is that I have 500 items in the watchlist, so adding them individually to another list isn't feasible. I called eBay but of course don't get anything resolved. It'll be a priority though!
I'm still hoping that it gets resolved soon.

·2 years agoIt used to be possible to add an item on the Watch list to another custom list, and then remove the listing from the Watch List and keep the item on the other custom list -- but eBay seems to have recently changed how that works, and now it appears that deleting an item from the Watch List also deletes the item from any other lists at the same time.
Deleting an item from a custom lists provides an option to delete the item only from that list, or from all lists at the same time. Doing the same thing from the Watch List does not provide that option, and the deletion removes the item from all lists.
You can get around this as follows: Open each item on your Watch List that you want to move to another list (or keep on another list) in a new browser tab. Delete the item(s) from your Watch List. Go to the browser tab with the item listing, and then add the item to the custom list. You may need to refresh the page first if the item was already on the list and still appears to be on the list.

Do you mean you want to remove an item from your main Watch list but keep it in your custom watch list, Ex: Toys and Hobbies, Jewelry... etc. ? If that is what you want to do, the short answer is NEVER.
Items saved in a custom list are still on your main Watch list as well since it is a sub list of the main watch list function. It even says that on a listing page when you click on the Add to Watch list just above the main photo highlighted in a blue banner. Below is a screen shot of what you might see.
That particular item is in 2 custom lists because The seller chose Collectibles & Art, and Science Fiction and Horror movies. I could remove it from one of the custom lists, but not from my main Watch list.
