Very BOLD Misrepresentation. Vague Wording. Waste of Time and Money
Recently I bought two "Stripe Tassel Curtain Modern Living Room Bedroom Cotton Curtain". The photos in the listing are very beautiful in Pink, Pale Pink and Off White.
What I actually received are these in colors of pink/taupe, blue and grey:
Seller voluntarily offered a $5 partial refund on a $91.05 purchase. We do not want any partial refund because we cannot use them or sell them. They are too ugly.
My first international return in 20 years. I have very few returns because I usually sell the items of no use to me instead of returning. But these I have no confidence to sell. The total cost is $91.05. The return shipping to China will be $80.40 priority mail. It is about 5lbs.
Has anyone returned any package safely to China? What could happen? I already started a return request and seller still keep offering partial refund which I have no interest.

·2 years agoI am thinking they will just refund total amount. Too expensive for shipping to China.
Have to be firm. I normally don't like a lot of emails back and forth but in this case I feel it might be needed in case seller might stall.
And window of return is 30 days from receiving it for this refund. Don't not let them stall.
not-est-but-er
OP2 years agoIt's good that you remind me about being firm and terse. I also feel too much email back and forth creates false hope that I can be persuaded.
I really don't want to keep these ugly bulky heavy window curtains that takes storage space.

·2 years agoIf there were men dealing with the posting of this item then I can say it is no fault of their own. Why? A lot of men...more than 50% in the world are color-blind....not women. It's not like they can't tell colors....certain colors of such. One of the first things a retail store give's you a test on is colors....if you want to work for them. I failed terribly....many years ago. I also can't tell red from green in a dark room with laser tag...I would just tag everyone in the dark rooms.
I think its an honest mistake but anything can be returned on eBay...
Great photos by the way....as a man...I see no blue in the second photo. And that's why I never got hired in retail. And I don't even know what taupe is.
I sell stamps....I use color coated cards to identify colors on some stamps.

·2 years ago@12345jamesstamps
Do not worry about taupe.
Taupe is a mix of grey and brown.
Grey, when a mix of black and white, can range from nearly white to nearly black and every stop in between. Grey can also be made by mixing cyan, magenta, and yellow. Greys can be "cooled" with blue, green, and violet or "warmed" with yellow, red, and orange.
Brown is made by mixing the primary colors of blue and yellow, and then mixing that result with the primary colors of green and red. So, brown is hugely variable and can be cooler or warmer depending on the use of each of the four primary colors.
Ergo, since taupe is a mixture of grey and brown there nearly infinite variations of the color called "taupe.".
Don't worry about taupe. 😄

OP2 years agoWindow curtains are large items in the room that affect the mood. I hope at least the 3rd photo in this thread doesn't show the green/sage/seafoam and grey I received. That one doesn't have the outdoor backlight and was taken against the wall and blinds. Appreciate your sharing.

Not to worry. I don't see 'blue' in any of the photos either. Neither do I see any 'grey'.
All three photos look like the same item to me ... just under different lighting conditions. [I usually have a good eye for detecting color, although may not know the specific 'name' for the color.]
As for 'taupe' ... it's my very favorite neutral color. You should really become acquainted with it. It goes with everything! 😊

I sell stamps....I use color coated cards to identify colors on some stamps.
DH had to stop asking me to sort stamps by colour because I saw too many differences.
We keep finding colour identifiers in the boxes he brought home when he closed our stamp shop after 40 years. They sell very quickly on eBay.
I still think Gibbons is the best.
I was fascinated when a tradesperson was able to match my kitchen colour exactly after five years although I did not even know the brand, by using a colour identifier that also included information on what tints to mix.
@gone.c-33
I see a different mix on that picture.
Cream fringe. White or pale cream / dusty pink/ seafoam green. Only three colours in the panel, although the light does make some differences.

·2 years agoThis same thing happened to me once with a skirt that I ordered.... it took months arrived back in china (It was almost the exact same scenario of cost of item vs cost of return).... AND it ended up that the address apparently wasn't valid, so the item was returned to me undelivered, and yet I still had to pay the return cost, etc.... I complained to Paypal (who was the processor at the time), and they gave me a little bit of a refund (about 1/2 of what I was out)... and I learned that day, never ever trust ordering items from China when they say "buyer" must pay return shipping.... Unless it is an item that only costs a dollar or two, I don't do it. I'll pay the dollar or two extra to buy from a seller here in the united states, and let them eat the losses. You CAN file an "Item not a described" case, as the item is CLEARLY looks as not as described because the stripes appear to be going the other direction (they look like they are horizontal and not verticle like the first image, and they will have to pay for the return shipping, or simply refund you the entire amount. I recommend that you take that route, and do not let them manipulate you into sending back on your dime.... It never works out well. Not ever. If you already started a return...> What did you mark as your reason for the return???
not-est-but-er
OP2 years agoThank you so much for sharing your experience! I filed "not as described" even before I started this thread. Right now this seller has approved the return, and we are at the stage to get them reimburse me the shipping fee in advance. How do I compel them to reimburse me timely? They are trying to persuade to take partial refund. I offered my email address to pay me via PayPal. That's what I read somewhere. (Thank you whoever posted this info!!)
I need to go back to read the eBay money back policy book.

You should have mentioned that in your post.

not-est-but-er
OP2 years agoI did not come here just vent. It is not a simple domestic return. It has procedures I am not familiar with because I am concerned about losing my return shipping fee on top of the purchase payment.
I also believe it is a very bad practice for sellers to be vague and evade mentioning the colors of a home furnishing product in both title and description. And change the photos after the sale.
albertabrightalberta
·2 years agoSince you say, " it is a very bad practice for sellers to be vague and evade mentioning the colors of a home furnishing product in both title and description," why would you have purchased an item if the colors weren't mentioned in the title and description?
To your second comment, sellers cannot change the photos in a sold listing. If they relist or sell similar, they can make changes to the new listing but again, pictures in the listing from which you purchased cannot be changed.

·2 years ago@not-est-but-er,
I agree with the other posters, that the difference between the pictures is because of the lighting, as @maxine*j said:
And I'm sorry, but the pictures on that listing have not been changed since you bought them. The latest revisions were for the start and end of sales, the pictures were not revised.
(The only change to the title on July 30 was that they added the word "treatment" on the end.)
fab_finds4u
·2 years agoIt's wrong to suggest to file not as described when color is the problem. There used to be a link that said it's not as described if you ordered red and received blue but it's as described if the colors are a little off but in the same family like if you ordered fuchsia and you received hot pink. It comments about colors viewed on a monitor, blah, blah, blah.
It appears what you got are the curtains in the seller's picture.
I conclude it's buyer's remorse.
Too bad you were told to file a not as described case because you think the curtains are UGLY. That's not liking the curtains after you got them, or changing your mind. Not the seller's fault. I don't think they misrepresented the curtains.
Shipping costs to return to China with tracking is over $60 so the seller will be forced to pay you that to return it for a refund, or they'll be FORCED to refund and let you keep the curtains that actually match the seller's description!
Way to go to the posters here that have encouraged the OP to file the wrong case and screw the seller.
not-est-but-er
OP2 years agoThe colors are not in the same family. Pale pink and blue/green/sage/seafoam are definitely not in the same family.

·2 years agoI wasn't encouraging it, but from what I understood, OP had already filed the INAD and we know it's pretty much automatic from there.
As I said, I see the same colors. If OP hung the curtains and let strong sunlight show though them, I think they'd look about the same as in the listing photo. But I thought the INAD has already been opened and we know where it goes from there.

·2 years agoWhen looking at the two photos, they appear to me to be the same colors BUT the photo on the left shows the curtains to be translucent, and the photo on the right does not demonstrate that aspect of the fabric.
If you have a beef, it might be that the description did not indicate the fabric was translucent.
I would not buy a decorative item like this which shipped from any foreign country. I'd find the same item which is being filled from a fulfillment house in the US, even if it cost a few bucks more. Many of these commodity Chinese products are offered from US fulfillment houses for Chinese sellers.
not-est-but-er
OP2 years agoWhen I saw the blue/green and grey, I didn't open any further.
I'd rather buy everything locally or made in USA, but as I said earlier It is not easily available here even when you are willing to pay more. $200 more is not a few bucks more. Similar items are $268 a piece on itsy bitsy.
soh.maryl
·2 years agoAre you aware that, if you open an item not as described case, the price of return shipping is born by the seller? Since your seller is in China and you are not, he will be unable to send you a prepaid return shipping label, but will be required to reimburse you in advance if he wants his merchandise back.
Please read eBay's Money Back Guarantee for buyers.
not-est-but-er
OP2 years agoThank you for specifying that the seller are required to reimburse me in advance for the shipping fee. This is what I need to know. I don't want to lose $80 on top of $91 if they claim they never receive the return package.
It seems there is no step in the return request for seller to reimburse in advance.

·2 years agoHi @not-est-but-er
I easily can see that the two photos show the same item ... the one on the left being diluted by outdoor light (and possibly indoor lighting). I don't see 'blue' or 'grey' in either of them. I probably would call them a rusty salmon, beige and sage (or seafoam) green.
I often have to ask sellers which of their photos is closest to the real color of the item, since there often are wide differences among photos in a single listing.
I would NOT pay to return an item to China ... as there is a good chance it will be lost in transit.
not-est-but-er
OP2 years agoThank you all for taking the time to help me with this problem. I am honestly shocked that these two photos show "same or similar" colors on your monitors. I am totally aware of monitors have different renditions but on the same monitor? These two photos are not even close in colors on my monitor. There is NO blue or green/sage/seafoam in the photos of the original listing. I also looked at the photos on my iPhone many many times BEFORE the purchase. Can my iPhone's display also goofed?
Also there are about a dozen sellers selling the same window curtains on eBay. All show the same photos. There are many many photos of this item. None of them show pink with blue and grey. They are all Pink, Pale pink and off white. None of them specify the colors in the title and description. Just say "as shown in photos". They know they can change the photo after the sale. I had similar experience before. It's just I had other ways to salvage the transaction such as sell it eBay to reduce the loss. But this time I have no confidence in this kind of environment and the items are heavy.

·2 years agoAlso there are about a dozen sellers selling the same window curtains on eBay. All show the same photos.
You are dealing either with dropshipping sellers who have the same supplier or with a single seller with multiple accounts.
When you run into a dropshipper, the seller has never seen or touched the product. Everything is done by the supplier except finding a customer.
So if you want to buy something with multiple sellers and the same photos and descriptions, at least go for the seller based in the USA since that is where you would be returning an unwanted product.
not-est-but-er
OP2 years agoThe items are from China directly. I have no idea if drop shipping can be international as well. The local ones work out well for us. Usually very fast, like next day. So, no complaint here. This one took at least a week to ship. Then about 10 days to arrive. If it were not difficult to buy this specific pattern locally, I would not chance with Chinese sellers with anything more than $50. Local stores are closing. Other online venue either charge over $250 for similar drape or simply have no inventory of this type of retro pattern.
The seller probably never saw or touched the items. Then they would be swamped with returns.
Moved to a new place. My windows are still bare. Some furniture is being scorched in the hot afternoon sun. What a bummer!

·2 years agoI know you've already filed an INAD and, as you know, eBay will side with you more or less automatically and require the seller to provide the return label, etc.
I suppose it doesn't matter, but I will say, as others have, that I see the same colors. In the first photo, the curtains are full, hanging, and are back-lit. There is going to an apparent difference in color in the second photo with the curtains are folded, lying flat, and front-lit. But the difference is apparent rather than actual, to my eye.

·2 years agoLooks like you received the same colors as the pic in the original listing. What colors were you expecting?
Along with variations in how colors appear on different monitors/phone screens, the curtains in the pic have light coming through them. But I still don't see a radical difference.

·2 years agoI see the same colors in both photos but photos and computer monitors dont always come across the same.
Depending on the place it shows shipping from and your reason for the claim, you may be responsible for return shipping costs.

·2 years agoI, too, see the same colors in both of the images you provided.
not-est-but-er
OP2 years agoAlso, I noticed some of these sellers would change their photos after the sale. I caught this one added a photo with a hue of blue but still not even close to what I received. I pointed that out to them and so they changed back. They do not specify the colors in the title and description. Even when I specifically asked them about the colors their answers are only: "the colors are shown as in photos." Never mention the color. Every time I ignore a RedFlag I'd have regret.
femmefan1946
·2 years agoI see those colours on the left as dusty pink, beige and seafoam. And those on the right are the same.
Very popular in the early 90s.
It is very difficult to get accurate colour on any computer monitor. All save the most specialized will vary according to the settings.
So I don't agree with your colour vision.
You have to pay to Return for Refund if the problem is Buyer Remorse.
The alternative would be Not As Described. What colours does the original listing call the fabric? If they only said pink and white (or cream or beige) then you have a NAD. If they mention the green/blue that would be correct and not an NAD.
With an NAD the seller pays return shipping and refunds on arrival, so tracking is necessary.
not-est-but-er
OP2 years agoThe blue/green and grey/beige (depending on the monitor) are not mentioned in the listing at all. Only pink.
I'm not sure if we are allowed to put the listing link here. But I provided most of the words in the listing title you can verify.
This is not a frivolous purchase. I do not have buyers remorse. This is a case of NAD.
nobody*s_perfect
