Trump import duty or tariff purchasing an ebay item from japan for $500.
I am trying to buy a drill on ebay from a japan seller costing $500 usd. Do you know how the current trump tariffs will affect this buy? De Minimis Tax Exemption 800$? 10% Import duties?
What is the current situation? I'm afraid to order not know how much I will end up paying?

Why are you trying to buy a Makita 40V Earth Auger Drill from a Japanese seller when they are available in this country? If you were to buy it from a Japanese seller who is a Makita authorized dealer, its warranty may not be valid in the U.S., due to different Warranty legal requirements, and the possibility that the item would have to be returned to a Japan based warranty center at your cost. If the seller, is not an Authorized dealer Makita's warranty will likely not be honored.
You may pay more if you buy the drill in the U.S. but it may be worth the difference in cost, but you need to ask if the seller is an Authorized dealer, or the warranty may not be able to be used. Most Mfrs. Will not honor or allow item's warranty to be registered if their items are not sold by an authorized dealer.

Tariffs (and de minimis) are assessed based on where the item was manufactured. Makita drills are manufactured all around the world. Check the item specifics, is the Country of Manufacture specified and what is it?
If it is not specified (or if it is shown as China or Hong Kong) then the item may not be (is not) eligible for de minimis exemption, and tariffs will be assessed. How much is unknown, the rates are changing every day. You would have to wait and see what rate is assessed by US CBP. So if the country of manufacture is not specified (or is China or Hong Kong) it is recommended not to make the purchase.
There is some evidence that suggests, if the country of manufacture was not specified on the customs form by the seller/sender, then items that are frequently manufactured in China (like drills) will probably be assessed by US CBP with the assumption that they were manufactured in China.

OP1 year agoWanting to purchase a makita auger drill from Japan ebay for $500. Just making sure i'm not going to be responsible for $100 or 400$ on import duties because of Trump tariffs and the taking away de minimus <$800. Is the De minimus <$800 no duties still in effect?

·1 year agoUnfortunately, the tariff rules seem to change weekly. Makes planning interesting.
I did a quick google search and it appears the de minimis exemption from Japan is still in effect.
Overall, it appears there is a baseline tariff of 10%.
There are a couple of restrictions e.g. cosmetics and food.
Most of the articles were published in April 2025 so be careful.
