Triangulation Scams
Just received an item that I'd purchased but has a stranger's name on the label (with my address). I called this person thinking I'd received their package and come to find out they'd had their credit card stolen. This package showed coming from a well know sports equipment store. I just learned what a triangulation scam is and I think that's what happened here. So, if a deal on something new seems too good to be true, it probably is. You may still receive exactly what you were wanting, but someone else got scammed the full cost of that item while your money went to a scammer. The seller I purchased from is listed as sahband-0, and is listed as being located in Sri Lanka. Ugh, so angry about this and don't think I can do anything to make it right. If this other person's name hadn't been on my package I never would have known. So all I can think to do at this point is try to support awareness. ·1 year agoThe retailer that sold the items knows well enough the risk of shipping to any other address than what is on the card used to pay. Many will accept orders to other addresses to make sales. That is the risk they took. This time the dice came up snake eyes.
That country is one a several well known for that.

The seller would have to pay return shipping.

When it comes to online shopping that is even more true now, especially with Dark Web aiding scammers. Many of the scams we see posted here start with a low to too good to be true price.

The listing you bought from shows a 22 - 31 day estimated delivery time frame which is consistent with many free international standard shipping for items coming from China. However, if you had clicked on the Shipping, Returns & Payments tab you would have seen that the actual shipping method was UPS Ground. which is often used in scams. Was the sporting goods outlet a U.S. based one?
One thing you need to know is that the Sri Lankan seller's on ebay do not have their own stock in hand. All of their items are drop shipped from China based suppliers, no matter what the item location says. The seller gets a very low percentage of the sale, whereas the chinese supplier gets the bulk of the money from the sale.

The link you provided is what Experian wants their customers to know below is an image that is a simpler description of how the scam works. The entity that gets scammed is the legitimate ecommerce store or site. Which is why @campanaelia, had problems when trying to buy from those sites.

·2 years agoI've had this happen to me many times buying on ebay. I received items from many different retailers including Amazon, Home Depot, Lowes, Sears, Wayfair, and Walmart . In my cases all the packages had my name on them. I didn't know they used stolen credit cards until I tried to place orders online at the same sites and my orders were being cancelled because my address was being flagged for fraud. It took me over a year to clear things up.

·1 year agoI shop eBay for Patagonia. I can tell that some sellers repeatedly use triangulation because buyer feedback indicates that the items were sent to the wrong address and that the shipper was a major vendor, not the seller.
eBay doesn’t show me a way to flag these sellers. How do I report them?
