The End of eBay
Summary: op62b3 expresses frustration with eBay, criticizing it as no longer a valuable platform due to inflated prices and mandatory sales tax collection. Other participants respond by explaining the necessity of sales tax due to legal requirements and sharing their experiences, some positive and some negative. The discussion includes differing opinions on whether eBay still offers good deals or has become less reliable over time. feiner1 and bonanza125 mention others who feel similarly about eBay's current state, but bonanza125 argues that the platform is still growing in popularity.
I'm done with eBay. It's all a bunch of garage sale scavaging punks inflating junk beyond the point of no return. Plus the collection of sales tax. That's a ripoff in itself.

·3 weeks agoWell, looks like garage sales are the only place to avoid sales tax…for now..👀

·3 weeks ago · EditedYou are purchasing items on a selling platform which your state requires you the buyer to pay sales tax. Yes for years states weren't enforcing sales tax collection from online selling platforms. That is no more. It's not a rip off it's the law. Ebay is not a garage sale. You will find sellers who sell all varies types of items. If you are done with Ebay then so be it.

OP3 weeks agoWhen they started collecting sales tax on eBay, that was the beginning of the end. It just another means of government extortion of the people. And what do they spend that money on..? In most cases, not the people. Just because they made it a law, doesn't make it right.

·3 weeks agoHere is the thing where a lot of people who come in here are mistaken. There is this thought from people who think that "this is the end of Ebay or Ebay is dying." No! Ebay is not ending or dying. It is actually growing. More people are looking to buy & sell than ever before. People are now getting use to the fact they have to pay more for shipping and for taxes. They rather buy the item and have it shipped rather than go looking around locally and even if it is available locally. A lot of collectibles and vintage items folks can find locally so they come to Ebay to buy.

OP3 weeks agoI've been on it since the beginning. It just isn't the same. You have people on here now making it look like they're in your country when you find out they're not AFTER making the payment. All kinds of weird stuff now. More scams than in the past. And eBay lately has been letting them get away with it.

·3 weeks agoYou can still get good deals on items you can't find any place else. You do have to do more searching these days.

< garage sale scavaging punks inflating junk beyond the point of no return >
Are the punks the buyers, who are inflating prices through competitive bidding? Or do you mean the punks are the sellers, who are inflating prices by too optimistic estimations of their items' values? Just wanting to know which category I fall into.

OP3 weeks agoI mean the entire ball of wax. The culture has just gone sour with greed. Of course it's not everyone. But it's evident, the writing is on the wall.

·Sep 7, 2026 at 7:20 AMDo you also see state sales tax as a ripoff when you pay it when gassing up the car or shopping at Walmart? How about at the local grocery store? eBay is required by law to collect state sales tax just like Walmart and the gas station.
op62b3
OP3 weeks agoTax on gasoline is 1/3 to in some cases half the total you pay per gallon, depending where you live.

·Sep 7, 2026 at 7:04 AMWith the items I seek it takes patience. Sure there's alot of "garage sale scavaging punks" out there but there's also some phenominal deals to be had. At least in the genre of the items I collect..............................

·Sep 7, 2026 at 7:00 AMNot sure where you're going to not pay your taxes like everybody else, but thanks for the announcement and good luck!

OP3 weeks agoJust about everything has a tax on it these days. I'm just saying you do have a choice not to buy.

·Sep 7, 2026 at 6:52 AMDon't you pay sales tax when you buy local?
It's not different buying online.

·Sep 7, 2026 at 4:53 AMEBay is required by the Supreme Court ruling South Dakota v Wayfair to collect tax as dictated by each state. You may not have noticed it, but all online retailers collect state sales tax. If you think that's a "ripoff" talk to your state legislature, not eBay.
It's also not necessary to announce your departure. The forums aren't an airport.
