Thank you eBay for screwing me out of winning an auction!
I went to bid on an item near the end of the auction, like I and most buyers do. But instead of getting my bid in, eBay told me to choose a payment method. WHICH IS THE SAME PAYMENT METHOD YOU HAVE ON FILE THAT I USE FOR ALL MY PURCHASES!

kensgiftshop's reply: "you're blaming Ebay because you lost, when it was the seller that set the auction to provide a funding source". Isn't exactly true. eBay set up the auto pay system for auctions and making offers, and opted seller's into it without their knowledge. For awhile they stopped that for auctions but reinstated it in June of last year. So many sellers do not know auto pay is in play on their auctions.
Doing as @gator08041971 suggested and starting to place a bid early on, to see if you have to provide your payment info will let you know if that is in play. You can then adjust your timing for placing your snipe bid as snipers have to do these days. Just keep in mind, that it is not always the Last bid that wins, but the highest one, so checking the bid history to see if other bidders have placed Automatic bids earlier is something you should do.

OP1 year ago@kensgiftshop Brilliant! No one else on this site waits to bid during the last few seconds. That's why auctions go ballistic at the end... cause most bidders do this.

I'm a last second bidder/sniper too and since the new "set a payment method" rule started, I check in advance as the other posters recommended.
It's a pain & an extra step but it's worth it if you really want that widget.

It would be nice to have a buyer opt. in for those who want to bypass/auto accept bid/payment. Maybe someone could suggest that during the next seller check in.?
Take the advice from @gator08041971 and "pre-check" to see if that will become an issue or not.

While I agree that can be frustrating to find out, my advice is to pre-check to see if this will be required on an auction so you know ahead of time. Go through the motion of placing a bid (without finalizing it) and you will know if its required early on.
Regardless if you have a method on file or not, they will not assume its to be used in these cases.. You have to choose it and authorize eBay to use that method for bids that require payment immediately.
This won't happen for all auctions as this is a setting that the Seller can control, but some may or may not be aware its active, or are using it on purpose to prevent buyers that bid and then don't pay later.
