Our tax exemption certificate expired with eBay on January 1, 2026, though it remains valid with the state until December 31, 2027. We provided the updated certificate immediately; however, several business purchases were made before our files were updated. As a result, we are owed a refund of over $700 in sales tax.
We have already supplied all requested documentation, which the eBay tax team confirmed was correct. Despite being given various timelines—ranging from 24 hours to 60 business days—we have yet to receive the refund. It has now been over 60 business days, exceeding the maximum timeframe previously provided by customer service. Are any members experiencing this same scenario?

·2 months agoHave not experience it on eBay, but elsewhere your dates need to match, no back dating allowed. So if it expired on eBay, it expired. Ebay's records will not show you had a valid exemption at the time of purchase.
It would be no different if you had a valid permit, but never filled out the tax exempt form in a store, but wanted a credit on back taxes since your permit was valid at the time you purchased. Still needs to be updated with each vendor. Not all stores/merchants/vendors have to honor it anyway, so when they do, you need to follow their policies. It's not a total loss, I believe when you file quarterly sales tax reports, you can show it as prepaid taxes.
Btw, in my day to day business, I give you one year, and then you need to update all the information, names, addresses, everything and sign and date again

OP2 months agoMy situation is not a matter of any back dating. It was eBay that did not process my tax exemption in a timely manner. It was filed on 1/2/26 and they processed it on 3/12/26. During that time we purchased many items. The customer support team gave me assurances that since I previously had a tax expedition certificate on file and it was current as of 12/31/25, then what ever taxes I paid would be refunded. eBay requested a spreadsheet on my purchases, transaction numbers and amount of tax paid. Confirmed that they had everything they needed from me. As of today, nothing has been refunded. I've been on eBay for 29 years now and I've never experiences such ineptitude and conflicting answers.
