Often I see sellers with unreasonable shipping rates that are twice or more what would be normal shipping for the item. Many respond to my inquiry on the shipping by stating they are just listing the highest shipping available, but will ship for less. Problem with this is that the buyer is paying the high shipping price as part of the purchase. I have been charged $20+ for shipping, only to receive the package marked with shipping that was under $10. So essentially they are marking up the shipping to make additional money. This is fraud.

·2 years agoDo I charge more than the actual postage, sure do! Only time I charge less is when it's free shipping (only my fixed price sales have that) and guess what... yes it's built in! I see that this is a problem for you, fortunately I don't sell what you seem to buy or, after reviewing the feedback you have left for others, I would block you!

Op may find that an ongoing problem after this thread.

·2 years agoYou can't have it both ways. Shipping also includes packing.
To meet your strict no "profit" policy on shipping a seller would have to send your item in a brown paper bag, and lose money due to eBay fees. Then you would complain about the lack of protective packing, as you have done in your feedback.
albertabrightalberta
·2 years agoAnd the OP had done just that to a number of sellers!
"Item was as described, but was shipped in a box with no padding or fill."
"Game was shipped without sufficient protection, so the box arrived crushed."
"Game is complete and in good shape. Seller did identify that the plastic cover to the game tray was damaged, but it was damaged further in shipping due to the poor job in packaging it."

·2 years agoSellers are not allowed to downgrade shipping. If a listings says priority and they ship ground advantage, that is not allowed. But if priority is chosen and they ship via a priority flat rate box because it was cheaper, that is allowed. Priority is priority. I have done that in the past because the distance was further and flat rate was cheaper.
Shipping has gone up 2-3 times every year since COVID. Boxes, tape, ink, paper, and shipping supplies all cost money and are figured in the shipping amount. No one is making a profit on shipping. eBay charges their final value fee on the TOTAL price, including what the buyer pays in shipping and tax. Higher shipping = higher fee.

You may have just burst the ops bubble in screaming "FRAUD".

·2 years agoThat's not "fraud". People like to throw the words "fraud" and "scam" around and really have no idea what they actually mean.
Besides, the $20 you are claiming they charged may not be far off from their actual COST to ship.
Ebay is going to take a cut of that which could be 15% so that takes $3.00 of that 20. (now 17)
Could be another $2.00 for a box (maybe more, maybe less) so that 17 is now 15.
Another $1.00 or so for interior packing material, tape, paper, ink, so that 15 is now 14.
$10 for the actual shipping so that 14 suddenly becomes 4.
So $4.00 now has to cover the labor (and if they pay an employee then they are probably losing money on it), gas, wear and tear on vehicle to drop off to the carrier.
So, they make a couple bucks, they may lose a couple bucks. Bottom line is you know the total cost of the item before you purchase. If not happy with that price you have the wonderful option of hitting the back button.

·2 years agoYou have to look at the total price, item and it's shipping when choosing. If the shipping is too high, find another seller.
Shipping has gotten very expensive over time. It's not always being over charged. It goes by both size and weight.
kensgiftshop
·2 years agoNo, it isn't fraud.
You knew upfront what they were charging for shipping.
If the listing showed $10 for shipping, then they charged you $20, that would be fraud.

·2 years agoHi @cry4havoc
The total price is really all that should matter. What difference does it make if the seller puts their profit into the handling charge or item price? It will always be somewhere.
Please refresh your memory on the definition of fraud.
cry4havoc
OP2 years agoI have no problem with my memory or definition. Fraud: The wrongful or criminal deception intended to result in financial or personal gain. When you advertise a shipping charge and then select a cheaper rate and keep the difference, you are a thief, and that is fraud. If you plan on charging for "handling", then be up front about it and I will move on to another seller. I find in most cases, sellers will adjust their shipping or refund the difference, but occasionally I run into the dishonest ones who don't respond when asked why they advertised a shipping rate then actually spent much less.

'scam', and 'illegal', the three Ebay buzz words..tired old cliches that are done to death on the boards.

If your definition of 'dishonest' is a seller who doesn't reply to your demand to know why they charge what they do ... then I do believe that your memory does indeed need to be refreshed as to the meaning of words.
It is neither fraudulent nor dishonest for a seller to charge for shipping what is shown in the listing as the shipping cost. Where is the deception, which is what makes something a 'fraud'?
[It IS dishonest to say you will ship by one shipping method ... and then ship by a cheaper one ... BUT that isn't the situation you described your OP. You are claiming merely having a handling charge is fraudulent/ dishonest, which is nonsense.]
cry4havoc
OP2 years agoStop rephrasing what I write into statements so you can contest them; this is referred to as the "strawman" argument in logical fallacies. I didn't say that people who don't reply to my request about their shipping rates are dishonest, and I did not "claim" that merely having a handling charge is dishonest. I spoke about those who charge a higher shipping rate, then ship at a lower one, and then do not respond when asked about it. I said that sellers should be up front about their shipping and handling charges, then I will move along to another seller. Obviously this has triggered you, so you may want to reflect on your own activities that cause you to be so defensive.
kensgiftshop
·2 years agoThe seller was up front.
Listing said shipping was $20 and you were charged $20.
Don't see where the problem is?

·2 years agoI am a buyer only, so have no reason to be defensive. I AM protective of eBay sellers when they are wrongly accused of breaking a civil or criminal law by posters like you.
A seller who advertises Priority Mail shipping... and ships Ground ... IS violating eBay policies.
A seller who advertises Priority Mail shipping ... and ships Priority for less than the buyer paid for shipping ... isn't violating a thing but your personal beliefs.
eBay's Shipping cost has ALWAYS included handling charges. There is no way to be 'up front about shipping and handling charges' ... unless you expect sellers to break down all their expenses in the Description for your personal approval.
But do have a nice day @cry4havoc. 🙂

OP2 years agoYou keep inventing scenarios to accuse me of being ignorant of the rules. I am well aware that sellers through eBay get discounts on shipping. I am talking about sellers posting shipping at expediate rate for $30+ then shipping priority for $19+, and I have seen sellers claiming shipping for much higher levels. I have more than once had someone pull this stunt on me. It is dishonest. My opinion. You don't have to like it.
albertabrightalberta
·2 years agoPriority mail IS expedited shipping. They are NOT violating any policy.
If the seller advertised priority shipping and shipped by ground advantage, that would be a violation.
Any listing you look at will show the details of "shipping" as being shipping and handling.
albertabrightalberta
·2 years agoPersonally, I decide whether total price of the item (item price + sales tax + shipping) is acceptable.
I don't care if the seller has $100 with free shipping, $50 with $50 shipping or $90 with $10 shipping. I'm paying the same amount and ebay is collecting (from the seller) the same amount in fees.
There's nothing immoral or illegal.

·2 months agoIncorrect, it is a federal crime to use postal shipping fees to make money from a customer. If you charge $20 shipping and send an envelope with a stamp your are willfully committing mail fraud, some of you should really go read federal laws on the FTC website before you get yourselves in criminal trouble.
tobaccocardyahoo
·2 years agoIt is not fraud to include a handling charge and the cost of packing materials in the cost of shipping.
You should learn to add price+shipping+tax if you make your buying decision primarily on price.
