Seller sent me the wrong item, what should I do?
I recently ordered a Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 lens for around $777. Waited a while, but received my package. But when I opened it, I was greeted with no Sigma lens, but an older Sony A7ii with a 24-70mm oss kit lens.
I've already sent a return request through ebay, and contacted the seller. The seller replied with a message saying that he could send me a partial refund of $100 for the hassle and then ship my lens when it gets returned back to him.
Should I accept or should I wait till ebay gets back to my return request? Also what should I do with the wrong item I was sent? I really have no clue if I should trust the seller right now, since this is my first time dealing with a situation like this with.

Since the seller admits they made a mistake and sent an item meant for someone else, or just put the label on the wrong box, it can be tricky to deal with. I have ask if you have received the refund yet? If you have then you can be pretty sure the seller is honest. Because the dispute you have filed was closed, you cannot open another one through ebay.
One way to deal with the situation would be to send the Sony back to them, so they can ship it to the right buyer, and send the zoom lens to you once they get lens back from the other buyer. They would have to send each of you a return shipping label, which they can do by printing them out and scanning them to send to you.
Another way this could be done is for the seller to send each of you a shipping label so you send the camera to the other buyer and they send the lens to you. The problem with that is the honesty of the other buyer. Though I'm sure they would prefer to get the camera since it is worth much more. I had to do that a couple of times and it worked out well for everybody concerned.
Check the envelope in the upper right corner of the page for a message in a few minutes.

Sorry.

·3 years agoUnder NO circumstances do you close the return before getting your refund, REGARDLESS of what the seller might tell you.
You can come back here with questions or provide updates as you see fit.

·3 years agoNever trust a seller who sends the wrong item and has any reaction other than "oh I'm so sorry, here's a return label, I'll refund you as soon as I get it". This seller is trying to string you along past the deadline to ask eBay to step in.
Four days after you opened the case you need to go back to it and ask eBay to step in. Once you do that they'll send you a return label and refund after the seller receives the return.

OP3 years agoSo sorry if I sort of explained it unclearly and if I sound very unsure explaining this. But my situation "previously" was that I ordered a Sigma lens for my camera for around $700, but I received the wrong item from the seller. I received a Sony A7ii and a kit lens, worth around roughly $1000 if in very good conditions, which it is. I contacted the seller about the situation and he offered a partial refund as a hassle, I get to hold onto the wrongly shipped camera, and he'll stay in close contact for the lens that I ordered.
So now currently, after some consideration on my end and some digging, I did accept the seller's partial refund. This was because of the fact that incase this really is a scam, the item he sent (Sony A7ii) is a genuine camera and is worth more than what I spent on the lens from them. I can pull the "dick-ish" move on selling the camera to get my money back, but I won't consider it yet because he has messaged me back pertaining his concerns. Also I did send ebay a return request, but because I accepted the partial refund, it was ended.
From what the seller is "concerned" is that they're worried about their feedback rating as a seller and this was a genuine mistake from their part. He also said that he was supposed to ship both the Sigma lens I ordered and the Sony camera I received by accident, but because of a confusion from his end I received the Sony camera and not the Sigma lens. In addition, he did sound very apologetic expressing he would give me a partial refund for the hassle and he'll stay in close contact about the returning of the lens I ordered and have it reshipped to me.
So as of right now, I have accepted the partial refund, I am holding onto the wrongly shipped camera, and I am now just in a waiting game seeing what happens next. Also if anyone is curious, the seller only has 15 feedback ratings and is a 94.1% positive. To me, since I'm still quite new to ebay, is fairly good as a rating, but to the average ebay users, maybe it's not?

·1 year agoHow do you ask E Bay to step in? I have tried several times to write for a representative to assist, but all I can get is AI, and no help there.

·3 years agoEbay doesn't get 'back to you' on returns.
What 'reason' did you use for the 'return'? (guessing you opened an 'official' return)
Also- very important;
What was the purchase date?
What wasvthe 'estimated delivery date'
What was the 'actual' date you received?
Was tracking used?
Does it (tracking) show it was delivered?

OP3 years agoSorry if I sound very unsure about all of this, I'm still quite new to ebay and online selling in general.
The return reason was that it didn't match the description or photos. And yes it was an official return request.
1) So I purchased this on the 18th of July.
2) The estimated delivery date through ebay was supposed to be the 24th of July.
3) I received the package in the morning of the 27th of July.
4) Tracking was used through USPS, but initially the seller didn't provide tracking until I asked for it on the 24th.
5) Yes, it shows delivered on both USPS and ebay.

·3 years agoTrying to sort through all of this.
1. Yes or no: Did you actually open an official not as described case with eBay? You have 30 days after receipt to do that.
3. Yes or no: Do you really feel that his offer of a partial refund and to keep what you received is a satisfactory solution to the problem? What, exactly, will you wind up with according to the seller's plan?
4. You state it shows delivered and you do have an item. Not sure why you are concerned about delivery at this point.
5. For further information, most of us consider any rating below 98.6% or so to be not good.
6. Seems like both you and your seller need to re-read eBay's Money Back Guarantee for buyers.

OP3 years agoYeah sorry for my unsureness about all of this. Like I said before, using ebay in general is still quite new to me, so a lot of what I say or do may confuse average ebay users.
1) Yes I did open an official ticket, but it ended since the partial refund was offered and I accepted.
2) So currently, I still don't feel entirely satisfied since I didn't receive the item I ordered for. But because I am holding onto the wrongly shipped item, I am holding onto it for "collateral" you can say since it can be worth more than I have spent for the lens. What I'll exactly end up in terms of the seller's plan is a $100 partial refund and eventually the Sigma lens I ordered. I have already received the partial refund and now it's just a waiting game to receive the correct item.
3) It's not about the concern for a delivery, but it's my concern for not receiving the correct item I ordered. In a worst case scenario, I could've opened the box up to a couple of rocks.
4) Wow, I thought anything above a 90% would be good! Thank you for the insight, I never knew this. But also snooping around, the seller's only negative review was because an item he shipped. He didn't disclose the slight surface wear on a rookie card in the description of the item. And that review was from over a year ago incase you're wondering.
5) And yes definitely, I do need to reread and understand more about the money back guarantee or just everything about ebay's guidelines etc in general.

·3 years agoUnfortunately @tubbsmahn the worst case scenario is sending back the worth-more wrong item, and the seller resends nothing, or a box of rocks, and you're left with just the $100 partial refund of your full payment.
As much as we would like to trust the goodness in everyone, you should have declined the partial refund offer, and held out for a full refund after return of the wrong item, tell the seller as much, to re-buy the correct item from that seller or another seller.
This current solution is attractive (and it might turn out just fine), but it has unacceptable risk.

OP3 years agoI totally agree. There are risks when using ebay and everyone is exposed to them, but since this is my starting stages of using ebay, I'll just have to learn them the hard way.
I do hope that the current plan stays true, the seller seems genuinely just as concerned as I do and we're just waiting on the other buyer that received my item to respond. That is why I told the seller that I will send the camera back to him when I receive my lens, but I'm hoping for the best outcome on both ends.
