Seller raised the price of an item during the listing.
Hello,
I was about to purchase an item in my watch list, and after speaking with the seller about the condition of the item, the seller raised the price of the item. Can a seller do that? It happened right away. I guess because I showed interest in the item, the seller raised the price during the listing. But is this within ebay's policy?
Thank you

·1 year agoI raised and lower my prices all the time. If I add promotional to an item, I will raise to cover that cost. If a lot of looker but no buyers I might lower, if still no takers, I might raise again...I'm fishing, fishing for buyers. However, if I see new watchers, I wont raise for at least a week

·1 year agoThis week I adjusted shipping charges on several listings which I had reason to look at.
They still had two versions of my most common flat rate charge.
Whenever I look at one of my existing listings, I might choose to adjust the price or the shipping.
Some items get priced on a day I feel like offering bargains, and I do not feel like offering bargains very often.

·1 year agoYes that is not uncommon. Both on eBay or flea-markets. Showing interest can make a seller think it's worth more. You have to even take care when looking at items on a table. That too can give a seller the idea to raise it's price.
Besides, you can always return it at the seller's expense.

·1 year agoThat is exactly why I don't like watching items, I add them to my browser favorites instead.
That's also why I like when sellers send me offers even when I don't add items to my watchlist and only viewed them.
I also add auctions to my favorites and organize them by ending dates, to not show my interest to other bidders.
And lastly, my regular sellers I just keep their tab open to see what auctions are ending each day

·1 year agoI don't go to those lengths, but If I'm watching something, and the item is listed as accepting offers, I will definitely 'unwatch' it before making an offer.

·1 year agoOf course they can, until an item is purchased it is theirs to raise or even lower price.

OP1 year agoWell, these were sunglasses. They made no mention of condition. Wouldn’t you message them about the condition of a pair of sunglasses? I don’t know about you, but I can’t see out of sunglasses that have scratches on them. Useless. May as well throw them in the trash, right? These were expensive glasses. I would rather lose than snooze. But thanks for your response.

·1 year agoI can understand why you would want to know that ahead of time, there is nothing wrong with asking a question.
But if you did receive them and they were scratched, you could open an item not as described return and the seller would have to pay for return shipping and refund you once they received them back.
It's possible that when you asked the question the seller may have realized that they made a mistake in the pricing.

·1 year agoI am not saying you should not of asked any questions. Sometimes great deals are under valued and questions can alert the seller to check the price and adjust. You are covered by the eBay MBG so if they arrived scratched (and the listing did not state that) you would be able to return them for a full refund. Sometimes you have to gamble (purchase item) if the price is low enough as long as you read the description. Timing can be important if price was well below market.
That being said, why would you want to deal with a seller if you think they are not being fair/straight? First impressions matter and maybe they saved you a INAD return.

"I was about to purchase an item in my watch list, and after speaking with the seller about the condition of the item, the seller raised the price of the item".
Usually when a buyer contacts a seller about an items condition, they do so because they think something is wrong or not mentioned. On occasion a seller may go over the item again or do more research and find it is in better than described / photographed shape, or has an often missing part or accessory, that will have them thinking the item is worth more. An unfortunate drawback about questioning a seller about an item's condition.
At that point the seller is within their right to raise the price if they see fit. After all it is THEIR item, up to the time a person buys it.

·1 year agoSellers can do whatever they want, changing the price is within ebay policy although doing so right after you showed an interest in like a slap in the face.
I would remove it from my watchlist and add it to my browser favorites to check back to see if they drop the price back down. I certainly wouldn't play into their gouging games.
