Seller hacked?
I bought an item (fairly expensive, new, about 15% less than the best retail price) on the 9th. I didn't receive the tracking number and was in contact. The seller responded saying that they would update the tracking number when they got it. The item was claimed to be dispatched and should arrive on the 14th (and the eBay order page said likely by the 15th). In response to that message, I got a message that appeared to be an auto-reply from eBay saying that the seller was away until the first of December (!) and in the body was a message from the seller stating "THIS ACCOUNT HAS BEEN HACKED."
When I went to the seller's eBay site, it was empty. I guess that it is *possible* that it was hacked after my item was posted, but it seems unlikely!
The seller was highly rated (100%) with a few hundred purchases, tens of sales, and an oldish account (from 2008). Those are the typical checks that I make before buying.
I didn't see any red flags.
What should I be looking out for next time? And what should I be worried about? Will there be a problem getting my money back (I sort of hope not)? Can a scammer do anything with the info they have through the sale? Did they just get a better deal from someone else and renege?
