Seller giving different return address from Ebay
Summary: robinsnest121221 is concerned about a seller requesting a return with a different shipping label than the one provided by eBay, especially since the purchase was made in error. tobaccocardyahoo warns that bypassing eBay's system could negate buyer protections. mudshark61369 explains that the cancellation might not have been honored by the seller and that return responsibilities often depend on the reason for the return. jonathanbrightlight and qeqo_0 discuss who should bear the return shipping costs when mistakes are involved. The conversation highlights uncertainties about handling such return situations and the importance of following platform protocols.
Not sure, Seller is asking to wait, to receive a different return shipping label, than the one Ebay sent.
Now, for me, I have not had to return many items on Ebay, however, this is a first, in that some one is
sending their own shipping label, that is different. I need some input on this, I am adding tracking of
this item and maybe insurance, because it has come from China, by the way, this was ordered in error
too many tabs open, did cancel same day, with in 15 min, at best, but some how the sale went through.
So, I do not want this to get lost some how, I would rather talk to some one, however, Ebay is seriously
automated, to which, I do understand.
Tho, I am cautious, I do not want end up paying for a item that I canceled the same day. Also, it is
sitting unopened, waiting to be returned.

·Sep 7, 2026 at 3:59 PMUse the label eBay sent to you, and only that label. Obviously, you were allowed to file for a return which is why you received the label.
This sounds more like a dropshipper who doesn't want the item returned to their address because they need it to be returned to wherever it shipped from in order for them to receive credit. Not your concern, return using the label sent to you from ebay

"by the way, this was ordered in error too many tabs open, did cancel same day, with in 15 min, at best, but some how the sale went through".
The sale went through because the seller did not agree to the cancellation request. Since you entered into a contract with the seller when you committed to buy, you cannot unilaterally cancel the transaction, the seller has to agree.
"Seller is asking to wait, to receive a different return shipping label, than the one Ebay sent... this is a first, in that some one is sending their own shipping label, that is different... because it has come from China".
What reason did you give for wanting to cancel the transaction? If you chose Bought Wrong Item, or one of the other Buyer's Remorse reasons. YOU should be paying the return shipping cost. If you selected not as described, damaged... or one of the reasons covered by the Money Back Guarantee, for seller pays the return shipping, you have violated ebay's return policies and could be reported for the violation, by the seller.
China based sellers cannot buy return postage from the U.S. so eBay did it for them, and it is likely to be a higher amount than you paid for the item's shipping to you.

OP1 month agoItem was ordered in error, had a number of tabs open, and these were similar in price.
Did not see the difference, till some time latter. About 7 to 15 minutes. Then proceeded to cancel order, giving the previous reason stated. Latter, the Ebay system, only gave limited options, in response, to why the order was canceled.
Then 6 days latter, a message states, they are having a problem canceling the order, on the side of the seller. Contact them, if the item does not arrive by the receiving date - 8 15th. So, I did what was asked and nothing showed up, but also, no true conformation that the order was canceled. Until the 29th, when I received a message that the order would arrive by the 5th of September. Ok, then. It arrived on the 3rd and when I returned
home, I did not open the box, checked in with Ebay, asked for a return label and waited.
Some hours, latter a message came through, for a return label to be printed and a time for USPS, to pick up the item, or drop it off, at the nearest office. I printed the label and listed the next day to pick it up.
What bothered me, was the Sellers message to, not use Ebay return system. Saying that the label would be wrong.
I digress, I agree, if it was a day or more latter, I would expect to be responsible for the return cost. However, there was time, to cancel the order and not send the item.
This is the first, odd problem I have had, since shopping on Ebay.

·1 month agoYour mistake in having too many tabs open and buying the wrong one (which is several steps, not just a single misclick) is your problem to solve, not the sellers. They received a valid order, and they did not have to cancel it. Since the mistake was yours, you are the one who is and should be responsible for the cost of the return.

·1 month agoEven if this is your mistake@jonathanbrightlight what if the seller has free returns
-- which explains why an eBay return label has already been issued.

·1 month agoHow do you know the seller of the item that the OP bought from has free returns?????

·1 month agoIf the seller offered free returns, then it wouldn't be discussed...

·1 month agoIf you go around the Ebay system, you could lose all protections against seller fraud.
If you do not use Ebay's label and its tracking number, how can you prove to Ebay you returned the item to the seller?
Your seller may have a valid reason for wanting the return to go to a different address, but he should have provided that address to be used for returns to Ebay.
This seller could have had the order dropshipped to you and want you to return to his supplier.
I would protect myself and advise the seller that you will be using Ebay's label.
