Seller adds tracking after I message. Package delivered same day but to different address

I recently purchased a fan here on eBay on May 29th and didn't hear anything from the seller for a few days. I messaged them on June 1st asking if they had shipped my package yet. No response until earlier today (June 3rd) saying the package has shipped. A little while later the seller added tracking information to the purchase and then shortly after that the tracking updated and said it was delivered. I looked everywhere for the package and couldn't find it. I then checked the FedEx website to see if a picture was given of the package delivered and there was a picture. It wasn't my place but I think it may be my neighbors place down the road. It was already late by the time this all happened so I decided to wait until morning before going there to see if that is where the package was delivered. I'll know in the morning if it was and will update here but this whole thing seemed a bit weird to me.

Why would the seller wait until the package was delivered to add the tracking information? I have also never had a package from FedEx delivered anywhere but here. Is there anything I should be aware of and if my neighbor didn't end up getting the package what should I do? The tracking says it was delivered.

The seller is now "no longer a registered user." In my message history with them I now have the message: "This user cannot receive messages because their account has been suspended or terminated. Please use caution before taking further action." Why am I not surprised? I wonder if they deleted their account or if eBay did something about it. I noticed they also got another negative feedback before their account was gone and the feedback basically said they were scammed.

I did get a refund by the way. I took the advice from previous replies and did a return instead of an item not described. I just returned to them what they shipped to me, which was nothing. I got the refund right when they scanned the label. I'm wondering if refunds would've went out for all the people who bought something from them when their account became no longer registered. They had a lot of items sold recently so I'm hoping everyone got their money back.

Sellers can’t delete their accounts when they have recent transactions, I believe for 6 months. The only way for them to be NARU at this point is for eBay to have removed them. As you found, that doesn’t negate your eBay Money Back Guarantee coverage, so you can still file claims and get a refund, and in fact it simplifies it because the seller can’t respond or drag it out.

I kind of wish I would've waited another day before doing the return now but I had no idea of knowing this would even happen. I mailed back a bubble mailer with just the return slip that printed out with the label. I have no idea if even the return address is even the seller so I'm hoping someone out there doesn't get it and wonder what the heck is going on. If it is the seller then I would've preferred them not having a package with my name, address and ebay username with it. Oh well. At least I got my refund and this person is off eBay.

I just checked the listing again of the seller and they changed their location to Louisiana now. When I made my purchase the seller's location was shown as a different state than the one now. The item also shipped from an entirely different state and when I went to print the return label the address also showed a completely different state than all of the others. This is so crazy.

I wanted to ask about the return. What if the return address on the label is just a random address that belongs to another person? I wouldn't want someone who doesn't know whats going on to get a random package from me but I also can't get the refund until the courier scans the label. Should I be concerned about that? I looked the address up on Google Maps. Its some subdivision with a lot of homes that all look the same.

Now I'm left wondering if even the return address on the label is the actual seller or just some random address. Should I be concerned about that? It does say I'll get the refund as soon as the label is scanned at drop off.

You can't make this stuff up. I waited until morning just to see if the seller would refund me before I initiated the return and nothing. When I started the return the label shows a Florida address. The listing shows the seller in Colorado and the item was "shipped" from Arizona. Unbelievable. Whats really disheartening is the seller updated the listing to having more available and 142 people have purchased the item.

We really shouldn't have to deal with this stuff here.

This is what comes up on the return request after I selected the reason for return. It did require a file so I attached a screenshot of the FedEx tracking pointing out that its not my home and circled the tracking number. Does this mean on the next page I will get a return label? The seller had it set to "seller pays for return shipping" on the listing. I thought the seller would have to approve the return before I was required to print a label.

Seller do not get to approve returns for not as described.   They are automatically approved.

Wouldn't it be better to select an option that they have to approve? My concern is the return label having an address that doesn't exist or the seller claiming they never received the return. If they have to approve the return there could at least be a chance of them ignoring it and then eBay refunding me after right?

As stated the seller has no choice if you file like i suggested.  If the seller buys the return label once you mail it you're covered.  Whomever buys the return label (the seller) is responsible for delivery.

It's very possible the seller won't want to throw money at the transaction.  They're already out the origional shipping fees and probably will just let the refund play out......................

The address does not have to be correct, and they can't refuse to refund if the tracking shows it was handed off to the carrier.  Just only use the label created in the case, not anything sent to you in a message separately.

Use "Item didn't match description."  It's the second one from the bottom.

Not sure but you might be required to attach a photo. If so, take a picture of an empty envelope, or a blank wall and attach it.

I had eBay call me through their automated chat since it seems impossible to live chat with an eBay rep now. They were of no help at all and basically suggested I open an Item Not Received case despite the fact I told them the tracking shows the item delivered with a picture that isn't my home. They kept saying I was protected under the eBay money back guarantee but it seemed like they didn't realize that  because the tracking shows the item delivered that probably wouldn't work out in my favor.

I cannot believe it is not only this easy to scam someone on eBay but it is this hard to get it resolved. I should not have to be spending a second of my time having to deal with this.

Do not expect any help from ebay.    Follow  roccotacodad54's advice exactly.      That is absolutely the proper way to handle the fake tracking number scam.

What should I select as the reason for the return or does it matter? There is an option for "Missing parts or pieces" even though I never received anything.

FYI,   once you file the return you may very well get all kinds of messages from the seller.    Especially if the seller is actually located in China (which many of them are).

IGNORE all those messages and just follow through with the ebay process as stated.

They may plead and threaten or say some actually reasonable things.    All are meant to string things along so that time expires.

Again, IGNORE any further messages from the seller.

In the very off chance you get a return label, just follow the directions others have given you.

"There is no such thing as foolproof, because fools are so darned ingenious" (unknown)3105View listings

    @casey-86 ,

" It wasn't my place but I think it may be my neighbors place down the road. It was already late by the time this all happened so I decided to wait until morning before going there to see if that is where the package was delivered".

Do not expect to find your package at the neighbors if that is where it was delivered. What was probably sent was something in an envelope that they might have thought was junk mail or maybe some sort of trinket was sent in a small box.  Ask them if they received either and still have the package with the label and your tracking number on it.

If they do, you can file a not as described dispute and send it back in the original package. Otherwise, send them back something an ad from a magazine in a manila envelope, when they send you a label.

Your seller's profile and items for sale has many of the signs of them being a china based seller, and these days you have to check feedback profiles and read listings carefully and even look at their items for sale to weed them out, because the vast majority of the fake tracking scams are done by them. Examples from your seller:

Revlon hairdryer for about half the price of others listed.  In the item specifics for Brand they wrote "Un Brand".

5 gallon gas can, photos show a Midwest Can brand label, but Un Brand in the specifics.

@casey-86 The only thing I will address is your statement, "I didn't hear anything from the seller for a few days."

You state you orderd the fan last Friday, May 29th. Unless the seller had same day handling, which isn't likely, the seller did not have to ship your item until Monday, June 1st. You should not have expected to see a tracking number until sometime that day or evening, assuming the seller has 1-day handling.

I also should not have expected to see a tracking number that updated moments later after being added to the order as my package delivered and then pull up that tracking to see a picture of a box that doesn't look like it has a 20" fan in it delivered at a location that isn't my home and may or may not be my neighbor's resident but here we are. I also shouldn't have to leave my home, go to someone else's home and bother them about a package they were never supposed to receive, but again here we are.

Also, I messaged the seller on June 1st. They didn't respond until June 3rd. The tracking was added after they responded, and then moments later updated to saying my package was delivered. Thats when I started to wonder what was going on.

I just checked the feedback of the seller and they have since received a negative feedback that mentions their purchase was also shipped by FedEx and was delivered to a different location and even in a different size box than what the item would fit in. Their feedback seemed fine at the time I purchased my item. I'll know in a few hours if my package is at my neighbor's. We'll see what happens.

Whatever you do DON"T file an "Item Not Received" claim for a refund.  Since it shows delivered you will lose.  Because of privacy laws eBay can't see anymore than you or I can, just if something was delivered to the same zip code as per tracking.

If your neighbor doesn't have it it's possible you're the victim of the "False Tracking Scam".

Filing a return for a refund on the "Why are you returning this item" dropdown menu think 2nd from the bottom.  In the unlikely event the seller does send you a return label send them what you got (nothing in a small box perhaps?).  If the seller doesn't within 3 days (I think) ask eBay to step in and get your refund.

Either that or go to your payment source (CC card?) and tell them you are the victim of the false tracking scam.  It's becoming a prevalent scam and they will know about it......................

That is one of the best explanations that I have seen about the fake tracking scam and how to handle it.      It needs to be copied and pasted to every thread regarding this issue.

If it were possible, it also needs to be posted on every listing since the scam has become so prevalent with ebay doing nothing about it.

So I went over to my neighbor's this morning and noticed it was not the same house as pictured on the FedEx page. I thought it may have been but it had been years since I went that way so I couldn't remember. The place shown in the picture is somewhere unknown to me however the tracking shows the item was delivered in the town and state of where I live. It also shows the item was shipped from a different town and state than is shown on the item page of where it ships from.

So now that I don't even have the package but its shown as delivered, what do I do? I've never had this happen to me before so I want to make sure I take the right steps to get my refund.
