Scammed with fake tracking number label
I purchased an item on Ebay, the seller's business was listed as Italy, I never received the item so I contacted Ebay and they contacted the seller that put a tracking that it was received two weeks prior. Normally when I purchase an item I received emails letting me know the status but because I thought the package was being shipped from Italy I thought that maybe it was delayed in customs. I went to my local post office and they advised me that the item went to another address in the same City and zip code that I live in but the tracking label had a different address on it. I disputed this with Ebay and they are siding with the seller because they are providing a fake tracking label to Ebay with my name and address on it. I opened up a dispute with the USPS but I am waiting to be contacted so that I can receive proof that the seller sent a fake tracking label but I've read some of the posts from other buyers that provided the proof to Ebay and they still sided with the seller. Is this correct? This is fraud on every level and we as the customers should not be held responsible. Con artist come as sellers and buyers and I understand that but what I don't understand is why go through the trouble of providing the proof if they are still going to side with the seller. EBAY need to go 1 step further by calling the USPS, Fed-Ex or UPS to speak with customer service to verify that the packages are being sent to the wrong address in the same City and zip code on purpose because they are sending items that customers are not ordering to any address and this is fraud. Why should I be out $500??? This is wrong!! I have ordered many items from Ebay and this is the first time that I have experienced this and I should not be left holding the bag. The seller has since removed all items for sale on their Ebay account which is suspicious. When I first ordered the item I tried to cancel but the seller refused, now that I don't have the item and I'm letting them know that they are scammers they sent me a message telling me to send the item back if I don't like it....really? How can I send back something that I don't have??? These are the types of things that Ebay should pay close attention to and it's being over looked. The tracking label is fake and if there was an item delivered to me why did I not receive emails with the tracking information? I did not receive that until after I started complaining that I had not received the package. I refuse to pay for an item that I did not receive so I am disputing this purchase with my CC company and I hope that I can have this resolved once I give them the information from the USPS. Lastly, items with these prices should be sent requiring a signature upon arrival that should ensure that buyers receive their packages and it should decrease fraud.

OP2 years agoI went to the post office, I showed the clerk the letter from the USPS with the tracking number hoping they would give me the slip showing the name and address the item went to. The only information the clerk gave me was that the item weighed 12oz. which is not the description of the item I purchased. They would not give me anything in writing. I called the CC company again and because they have already settled this dispute in Ebay favor I can't file an appeal. These scammers are getting away with this because company's like Ebay are allowing it. The only place left to settle this is with the credit bureau. I could care less that Affirm is not getting paid because I don't have the item. Affirm needs to hold Ebay accountable for allowing this type of behavior. If the customer can produce evidence from reputable company's like the USPS, Fed-ex, UPS etc., they should accept this. All it takes is one phone call to the company delivering these packages to verify that the item was sent to another address that does not have the customers name on it. If I felt that I could file a legal summons and win, I would pay for a plane ticket to California and fight this in court. I don't appreciate being scammed and being made to pay for something that I don't have. I hope that the next person reading this will have better luck than I've had trying to resolve this issue. When it doesn't work in your favor, disputing it with the credit bureau to protect your credit is the only solution. Once you show them the proof and it's removed that's it. I will call the 1-800 number on Monday to see if they can mail a letter stating that I did not receive the item to submit to the credit bureau because the email didn't help me with this issue.

If back in June you had opened and read the info in the link I provided and taken the advice given by @ittybitnot , you would have known that emails may not be accepted as proof, because they can be faked, and what to say to your card provider.
In the link I provided it told you what to do to get a letter on USPS stationary, and what it should say, that would have caused ebay to find an appeal in your favor or your CC provider to issue a charge back. Apparently, you didn't do either of those things.

OP2 years agoGood morning,
I went to my local post office and spoke with a Supervisor with that printed receipt and they would not give me anything. They told me straight to my face that you have been the victim of a tracking number scam and you will have to call the 1-800 customer service number to file a dispute. I went to my local police department and I filed a fraud report. At the end of the day, Ebay and Affirm know that the seller is a scammer and they want someone to pay regardless. Ebay did not even give me the 30 day courtesy to file the appeal after I submitted the information to the CC company. I've jumped through hoops and loops and I've done everything asked of me and you're right that email from the USPS on their letter head could have been a fake email but it wasn't. A person can look at the email and see that it was sent from a legitimate company so it's just another way for them to get out of settling the dispute in my favor. I even had a returned item from Ebay for $76.99 with the correct account number on it. Affirm sends me an email asking me what account it should be applied to, I call and give them the account number even though it's listed on the return email and Affirm still applied it to the wrong account. It was applied to the fraud account BEFORE I even filed a fraud dispute and affirm will not apply the refund to the correct account leaving that account open with the balance. Out of good faith, I felt that this dispute would be settled in my favor and once they saw the overage they would send me the refund but that didn't happen. I went ahead and I paid it out of my pocket to close the account but because I see that Affirm has unethical business tactics I contacted my bank to refund me my money back because I wasn't supposed to pay it anyway. I'm done disputing these accounts. Affirm won't close out the dispute even though they won't settle in my favor so Ebay won't close my account. To protect myself, I will monitor my credit report, close out the accounts on file with both companies and be done with it. Ebay should be ashamed of themselves. You're right, Ebay knew that Affirm would settle in their favor of the seller because I didn't have the proof when I opened the first dispute and I should have requested the USPS to mail the letter with the tracking instead of emailing it to me and I would have stood a better chance but hey, this is the first time that I've been the victim of a scam online and I refuse to order anything else unless it's from a company like Macy's or something similar because you never know if the person on the other side is legitimate or a scam artist.

Did you make it clear to the Supervisor that you only wanted them to confirm that the label's address did not match the order address you showed them in general, not with the exact delivery address. If they thought you wanted the label's address, they cannot give that to you. They also could have confirmed that the package type/size/weight wasn't appropriate for what you should have received in general.
I would have tried calling my P.O. and speaking to the postmaster not just a supervisor, after they wouldn't write me a note. eBay's appeal does not turn down scans or photos, of signed and dated notes.
"Ebay did not even give me the 30 day courtesy to file the appeal after I submitted the information to the CC company".
Once you file a dispute with a payment service or card provider, you give up your ebay protections. Affirm, being a buy now pay later service may have different requirements for proving scams than a standard card provider. Before filing with them, I would have called and asked what they would need to prove the scam, and allow a charge back.

OP2 years agoI got into a heated argument with the postmaster after speaking to the supervisor. I gave the postmaster the tracking number and I explained the situation and she clearly stated that the post office cannot give me anything to support that the item was a not delivered to me. I didn't not ask about the size etc. of the package. I will go to the post office today to see if the clerk can give me a printout or something with the weight of the package delivered and submit it to my CC company. I see why Ebay was so eager to pass it on to the credit card company. They had that 30 day window to resolve this but once they found out that the CC had the same information given to them they wanted nothing more to do with it. I should have called the 1-800 customer service number to request that letter be mailed to me instead of emailed to me. That way I could show the envelope with the postage stamp etc to prove that the letter is legitimate and not a fake. I looked on the fake tracking slip and there is not weight listed on there so I went to look on the Tiffany's website to see if there is a weight on there and there isn't. I googled the weight of a Tiffany bracelet 8 inches and it gave me what the weight should be. So much time has gone by and even if I submit proof that the size of the package delivered does not match the item delivered I don't think it will make a difference. I will try this as my last attempt and if it does not work I will stick to what I said originally and that's monitoring my credit report and changing my debit and checking account information.

OP2 years agoI gave the CC company the email from the USPS stating that I, the customer, did not receive the package because it was delivered to another address. I have argued that this if FRAUD and I didn't receive the item and this idiots still settled in EBAY's favor. It's clear to me that EBAY has a bunch of scam artist sellers on their website and once they receive the money from the CC company that hope that it's not settled in the customers favor because they will end up taking the loss. Well I will NEVER EVER pay for something that I don't have and I will NEVER EVER do business with EBAY or AFFIRM again. You can put the evidence in their face and they will ignore it. I will see them in court before I pay for an item that I don't have.

@Anonymous
Best advice when you contact your CC company: DO NOT INSIST that this is an "item not received issue". Make it very plain that this is a FRAUD complaint for a Fake tracking problem. Otherwise, the card company will submit the claim to eBay who will provide the same phony "delivery confirmation" as a rebuttal, and you will lose.
Good luck, and let us know how it turns out.

Buyers have to jump through hoops, because of shipping agencies privacy policies. Open the link below and click on the Go to Best Answer button to see what you need to do to win an appeal. Though the title of that Topic mentions FedEx, the directions about how to get the info you need works for USPS, FedEx, UPS.
If your seller is No longer a registered user you can add that info to an appeal or social media message.

FYI. Paragraph breaks are your friend. It makes reading a long topic much easier to follow.
