Scammed by Seller, will Ebay be able to help?
I bought a drone on ebay for $850, seller shipped to me a bubble envelope with a piece of cardboard inside. The envelope even had the wrong address on it, but it still got to my house, and the tracking number matches. The seller is a new seller with 0 transactions and was only created a week prior, but I figured it must just be a new seller. I used a card via PayPal to complete the transaction.
I opened a return case as "item not as described" as I figured the seller sent the envelope hoping they'd win off a technicality by saying 'well you got something'. I provided pictures of the package before I opened it (it was obviously not a drone, it was a small envelope) and the contents after I did.
The seller/scammer had been messaging me back and forth after I opened the return case. These are all the messages word for word:
Seller: "I sent you the goods in good order, why do you say that nothing came to you, according to UPS the goods were delivered"
Me: "The return requested was not around the goods not being delivered, but rather the item does not match the description or photos. I ordered a drone, but the only item in the package was a blank and empty envelope, as such it was not the item described. I have furnished photos of the package I had received. I require an immediate refund."
Seller: "This is some kind of fraud, I sent the item that is listed in my ad. I am asking Ebay to look into this matter."
Me: "Please do."
How likely is it that I'll be able to get my money back? I have never had such a thing happen the 10 years I've been using Ebay. It's a very significant amount as well.

·3 years agoThe 3 business days for the seller to resolve your return request are Wed Thu Fri, July 5 to 7.
If you still don't have a full refund, go back on Saturday (yes, during the weekend) to click Ask eBay to step in. If you get a prepaid return label @angelmaker98 return everything you received with that label to get your refund.

·3 years agoEasy to get a refund...30 days from date of delivered of I guess an envelope...Keep that date in mind.
Stop talking to seller who is very new with no feedback(why would you buy from him?).
Emails back and forth will not hurt you but why bother.

Did not want the OP to think he had to wait 30 days to open a case.

You need right now to stop corresponding with the seller. Stop it entirely.
You have four days after you opened that case to wait for a response from the seller.
During that period, you still do not engage with the seller.
On day #5, you return to the case and ask eBay to step in.
If the buyer wants his item back, he sends you a prepaid return label.
Upon receipt of the return, the seller is obligated to refund you. If he doesn't, eBay will do it for him out of his own funds.
Have you not ever read the Money Back Guarantee for buyers? Now would be a good time.

·3 years agoOf course not, but you can certainly see that it did not accomplish anything.
Again, it's very rarely that such back-and-forth chat solves any problems.
eBay has given you (and all buyers) a tool to use when a transaction goes wrong. Use it.
PS: You did save the envelope, right?

OP3 years agoAbsolutely, have the blank envelope and the packaging, took a lot of photos as I was opening it. Was instantly concerned when an envelope showed up instead of a box so I tried to be extra cautious

·3 years agoDo exactly what the other person's told you. STOP communicating with that scammer. You can NOT believe anything that he says. Make sure that you return to the case by the date/time posted in the case and if there is no refund or return shipping label, ask ebay to STEP IN. (Escalate the case.) Ebay will force the refund. You get your money back. You will get an email from Ebay stating that you were refunded. Once you get the email, it might take an extra day or two for the funds to reach whatever your source was (credit card /bank account.)
Do NOT buy expensive items here or anywhere online from sellers with little or no feedback. Besides being a scammer, your seller is a moron. Ebay holds the funds of new sellers for this exact reason.
AFTER YOU GET YOUR REFUND, give the seller this negative. Type this exactly . Do NOT mention ebay or the word refund or ebay will remove the negative.
Seller sent me cardboard inside an envelop. Avoid this seller.
That is it. Your scam seller deliberately messed up your address but I am guessing that your name was somewhat unique and familiar to your mail carriers and they knew where you lived.
