Refunds of small amounts
Why am I getting small refunds of say, $0.28, or $0.34? I didn’t even buy anything today. Feel like I should be suspicious?

Other buyers in Michigan have been reporting the same thing. It turns out that Michigan changed the sales tax rule effective Apr 26, 2023, and stopped charging sales tax on the shipping cost, if it was listed separately. There wasn't much notice, so eBay continued to charge sales tax on shipping to Michigan addresses for a few months or so.
Apparently, about a month ago, eBay started to refund buyers the sales tax that had been collected on the shipping charges. The refund will have an eBay order # to identify it, and you can search in your purchase history (use CTRL-F) to find the order number to verify this.

OP2 years agoThank you so much, I will still put a call into my bank to verify it, but this does make the most sense. Period. Really appreciate you taking the time to respond, Teresa

Dang! I live in Mi. and several months ago did receive a couple of similar small refunds I forgot about. It was before I learned of the Mi. tax law change. I was going to mention sales tax refunds in my reply, but figured that wasn't the reason. Good Catch!

I might agree with kathiec but if I remember correctly card verification small payments were always even numbers like $1 or .50 cents. It has been a long time since I had to go through a card verification though. It is possible those amounts were for something like over payments you were charged on shipping, or for something else, by sellers, that just got around to issuing them.
I would call the number on the back of your card and have the rep check to see if the supposed refunds actually came from ebay, and not some cloned account pretending to be ebay. They may be able to check the ebay account info, purchase debits are paid to, to the account the credits came from.

·2 years agoDid you add a new payment method? Typically small credits like that are used to verify that the payment source is legit.
