Payment details before bidding on auction
Went to bid on an auction this morning and as I normally do putting in my bid in the last few seconds and when I clicked the bid button it went to the confirm payment details page. This is the first I've ever seen on an auction. Is this normal. I have no unpaid in my history.

·2 years agoI just had this issue this morning NOV 10TH 2023 as a buyer who made an offer on an item that was accepted, the first you know about the acceptance is the payment has been made notification , not a you won this item please pay now. I guess they want everyone to register a credit card for this effect as a buyer. It will work if its a credit card payment from buyer to seller, but I can forsee issues where a buyer has not registered a credit card and has used a debit card for the prepayment registration. This is because things change and they may not have the funds, or have changed their mind regarding the purchase and wanted to buy using a different card. I think sellers should have been advised about all this before it was actioned. It is ineffect guaranteeing payment to Ebay including all charges relating to the purchase of an item, a subtle point, but one to be aware of perhaps. ie all postage costs packing etc . There may be issues with duties and taxes who knows? Its a possible win scenario for Ebay as it speeds up and 'guarantees' payment quickly. However im not so sure its so great for buyers and also for sellers who demand pre payment method registraion from buyers inorder to bid and or win and pay immediately. I do think Ebay are dreadful at implementing anything and seemingly never think anything through before actioning changes. Its not a good look especially when sales UK are dire. Ebay in case you haven't noticed very few UK sellers are listing and even less are buying! Its dead right now. Understandably so in a cost of living crisis. People are people and they tend to change their minds as circumstances arise or are unforeseen or unconsidered. This is an attempt to make people buy by pre committment. It may well backfire. Cheers and Best to ALL sellers and buyers still on this complex over bearing platform! Here's hoping we might get an uplift in sales on the lead up to Christmas, but dont hold your breath! One quesstion, If you were to remove this payment registration from payment methods and then reinstall either the same method or an alternative will you still be forced to pre reg a payment method or will it just default to where you choose which card payment method you wish to pay by? ie like its been for ages!

·3 years agoAnother eBay "improvement" completely fails... AGAIN. This has happened to me four times within the last two days. Many times, I will bid on items with the intention of getting combined shipping from the seller. It is a winner for the seller and the buyer. But now, winning an auction will immediately trigger the payment with no availability to combine shipping. Entering payment information will mean the funds will be taken immediately upon winning. I have reached out to several of these sellers and they are unaware of the "improvement" meaning eBay took it upon themselves to bless all of us with another moronic processes (getting to be a habit.) If I didn't know better, I'd swear they're competing with the US government in hope of being the most inefficient and ineffective organization on the face of the earth. I think this latest stunt moved them into the lead. Time to look for better platforms to buy and sell.

·3 years agoI am having this problem as well. I have no unpaid items. I was intending on bidding on multiple different items from the same seller tonite, but I refuse to pay separate shipping for each individual item that I buy. If I have to prepay, there is no way to do combined shipping, and I'm not spending extra money for every single item i buy. That is insane. Ebay needs to quit messing with things that work fine. I'm getting so sick of this.

·3 years agoI agree with you 100%. I am bringing up the same complaint. I won 11 auction items within four days and shipping would have been over $60 + tax. Thank goodness I won these last week before the "improvement" so it only cost me $8.00. I see little to no thought wwas put into this before implementing. If eBay truly wanted to fix this, use more resources to verify new acounts and possibly a probation period. Oh, and fire every person on your continuous improvement team. I'd really like to know who the scholars are that come up with this.

·3 years agoI have won multiple auctions in the past....just 2 weeks ago. Now, I am wondering if I will do any auctions since we cannot ask for a combine shipping total before purchase. Sometimes, I will win an auction one day and then more the next day. What a nightmare for a seller. Sometimes...change is not good.
I don't know if I will list auctions any more due to this as well.

OP3 years agoAs a seller and buyer I agree. Just think about all the lost revenue from last minute snipers though. I imagine that would be quite a bit of money throughout jut one day. My intended bid was 109$ more than the final bid that it sold for.

·3 years agoI think most people on here, myself included, place a bid within the last 5-10 seconds of auction end to gain an advantage. I wonder if sellers in this so-called "test" are aware of this. I guess they will be when they are expecting that last bidding rush with 10 seconds left and it just doesn't happen.

·3 years agoSerious sellers aware of this test..for their sake…yesterday I had this issue with “testâ€, so contacted seller with an offer over message ( couldn’t place an offer without verification), seller responded within 10 minutes ( smart for him), negotiated the deal and got paid …

Many sellers are not aware of this eBay "buyer/bidder test".

·3 years agoWho can take the option off, the buyer or the seller? I've reached out to three of the sellers and they are all unaware of these test "improvements." This is an absolute ridiculous test to put on anybody without asking or at least notifying. Another fair-share process used to frustrate those of us that have never had a mark against them in 21 years? Me things so.

·3 years agoThis option had been automatically turned on my account for auctions and didn't know it until about a week ago. The seller has to change thier settings and may not know or decided to keep the setting on due to frequent non paying buyers.

eBay dropped the following two preferences on all seller accounts with the default set to YES...with a little popup that says something in order of 'if they change it to NO, there is a chance for increased non-paying bidders or buyers'. The preference is meaningless unless eBay forces the BUYER ID into the program.
Unfortunately, they did not mention the other consequences of getting less offers, less bids, and less sales in general. There is no more combined shipping for a discounted price. Buyers are required to pay the full shipping on each auction win or offer accepted. Sellers pay fees on the increased amount as well.
Buyers can no longer use ApplePay, Google Pay, spendable funds, seller coupons or promotions, eBay coupons, PayPal Pay in 4, or PayPal credit.

·3 years agoHAH. This was the answer I was looking for... I apparently got put into the test tube yesterday for this new policy.
I will say, after i entered my payment info for an auction i went for last night, I deleted the payment method from my profile. Few hours later I got a message saying the payment failed to process on the auction I did win.
I paid for the item earlier today, seemingly no issues.
This is... troublesome. I get why they're testing it and folks wanted it, but if shipping can't be combined, it's going to be pointless to buy on here anymore other than for very specific items.

As we don't take less for our items the offer part doesn't affect us - but with the bid one we have a question
Has anybody filled out the 'provide a payment method before they place a bid' deal for seller 'A', then tried to make a bid with seller B' to see if asked for what would be the same info twice?
Maybe it's asked for once and the info is then kept on file.

Based on discussion in other ecommerce forums, the payment choice entered before bidding is set as a default. The buyer will not be reminded again, if "Seller B" also requires payment info upfront by default. A buyer that bids (wins) multiple listings will find out when they end and they are immediately charged for each individually.
I cannot say this is so from personal experience, since I refuse to participate as a buyer enrolled in this forced punishment camp.

·3 years agoOK and WOW, you also answered the second part of my question, the part I forgot to ask. So you think the ended and won auction will be instantly auto paid by ebay.
We also think if ebay does this right - as in only making people who don't pay or cancel six 'wins' after winning the seventh one cheaper - do this and not the buyers/bidders who pay, it will be a good thing.

·3 years agoI can speak from personal experience.
Info is retained so you don't have to enter it each time.
I wanted 3 items from a seller and put them into my cart. When I tried to buy them, I was going to be charged 3x the shipping.
I emailed the seller who told me she removed IPR and that I should request an invoice and she would adjust for combined shipping but I was unable to do so. My purchase wouldn't go through without payment up front.
Now I have to wait for the seller to issue a refund on the overpayment of shipping.
As a seller, I love the fact that I know accepted offers will be paid but the jury is out on whether I like it as a buyer. For a single item purchase, there's no issue but for multiples from the same seller, it's a PITA.

Based on what we've read on other posts on this board -
People ARE being asked to reenter for every bid/buy. If true, hopefully that will be corrected.
Won auctions ARE being auto paid instantly. As ebay officially allows buyer to wait four days, that should be the case with this deal.
If the auto paid is the way it works, and no invoices with corrected shipping is possible, that should be changed/corrected - still allowing the four day to pay would deal with this problem.
We wonder -- anyone who sells already has a 'pay to' place on file, and more importantly to this discussion, they have also agreed to let ebay pull money from it to cover some cost. Why can't 'some costs' include purchases.
So do they also have to re-enter the same info.
In our option, ebay should have included buying/buyers in their managed payment deal from day one. Sellers would of had a not just pay to but pay from on file, and the 'only buy' people a payment method on file, with funds held to cover bids, and used to pay for offers and BINs as soon as the buy button is pressed.
And the adding the 'option' and then just picking it for us without any mention bit - They did basically the same thing with their freight forward service. This ID was told, all our others weren't , which many complained about - if only ebay could learn from their mistakes and at the very least told everyone. They just love placing those adv boxes on the seller hub pages, could have done one for this.
And if someone is the only bidder and they don't pay, we really don't care - we're set up for auto strike and relisting isn't a big deal, so we're turned it off for auctions.
But at the same time we're not happy when people don't pay.

·3 years agoMakes me wonder how much time they spent researching and asking realistic questions about the consequences of their "improvement." I've reached out to several sellers today that have combined shipping in the past and they are totally unaware of this. Maybe ebay figures if they make this platform absolutely ridiculous, they'll all be able to get jobs with the US government because they now have a track record of failure. I only sell as "Buy It Now" so it only applies when I purchase something but if I sold auction style, I'd be on the phone right now demanding to talk to the moron that put this into place.

·3 years agoYou’ll be surprised, but if sellers have a “ buy it now “ option, I still contact them and ask if they interested to consider an offer..in 50-60% of the cases, sellers agree…no harm in asking..🥂

·3 years agoThis is a new process eBay is rolling out and testing with buyers who bid or make offers, you are obviously in the test list.
It was implemented to stop unpaid items. That doesn't mean you have done this. But then you have no buying history in this profile.

OP3 years agoThis is not very wise. Sniping will be cut down by quite a bit which will loose them and sellers alot of money. Bid on something yesterday and it didn't do this. Thanks for your answer.
