I notice you're in the UK. What site did you make the purchase from? You've asked the question on the US forums; on ebay.com, the US site, bank transfers are only an acceptable payment method in certain categories. That will differ from the acceptable payment methods on many of the European sites. If you made the purchase on ebay.uk or another European site you'll get a better answer if you ask this question in that site's Community.
Just a quick note if paying by bank transfer. You will have no way to get a refund if you would need to do that. Paying that way is just like paying by cash. Might want to pass on the item or just tell them you have to pay through eBay.

If bank transfer was shown as the payment option then the buyer needs to follow through with their commitment and the terms of the listing. Buyers do not get to dictate the payment terms.
If the seller is in Europe, bank transfers are more common there than in the US. That said, see if you can use a credit card for the extra protection; you are not required to pay via PayPal. Was bank transfer specified when you originally bid?
