Moral Support? Opening a claim for a defective item.
I have been on eBay since 2001 with over 940+ purchases and 100% positive feedback. I have always been able to work something out. I bought an industrial quality rug for a high traffic area. It arrived 12/20/25 damaged. I immediately took photos and contacted the seller. They offered a “partial refund†2 days later. The item was listed as new and undamaged. I explained why a damaged rug wouldn’t work out and they never replied back. Today I messaged them this morning and told them I would be filing a claim, in case they wanted to refund or replace on their own. How much time would you give them? I don’t want to lose my eBay Money Back Guarantee. I thought I was being careful. Their feedback is 99% - however, almost 9400 of that is automated. How do I keep eBay from giving them automated positive feedback? This needs resolved before feedback.

·9 months agoThat screen shot @forever-green provided in post 26 says the seller has 5-7 business days to inspect the item and issue the refund. I always thought the seller only has two days to issue a refund (that's what my most recent one was just a few days ago).

·9 months agoNo if you paid with PayPal, now eBay will refund your PayPal payment as soon as your return is dropped off with the carrier, long before your seller has had a chance to inspect your return. Of course it's likely this will stop if you make too many improper refurns.
This is probably to compete with Amazon, where you get your refund as soon as you drop off your return item at Kohls, Whole Foods, or the The UPS Store store, subject to a rebill after Amazon inspects your return.
But Amazon still has their legs up as you don't have to pack your return item or find a working printer at the public library if they are open to print a label then stand in line to pay the printer fee, and instead just self-service scan a QR code.

·9 months agoIt's common @forever-green for sellers to scam buyers by sending a return label using eBay messages. If the buyer falls for it and returns the item with that label, the seller will get their item back but won't have to refund the buyer. That's because eBay is still thinking that the item has not been returned ... as that label was not uploaded to the return request, but instead only in an eBay message.
That's why it was crucial to check that the tracking number or QR code is actually shown at your return request, as seen on your screenshot of that page.
Yes, a savvy buyer could then contact eBay customer support for help, but if the buyer fell for the label-by-message, sadly they weren't savvy at first.

If the messages are in your eBay inbox then yes, you are safe to use the code.

·9 months agoThat's a vinyl olefin mat...that is not that uncommon. It most likely was stored standing up. Usually they come with a note telling you to let it lay flat and it will level out. I can also tell it is the thinner vinyl not the thicker commercial heavy duty.

OP9 months agoI did let it lay out for days, the rubber was not super thin. The defect ran 38†on one side. It actually looked like it had been exposed to heat rather than crushing. Yes, I tried to save money on eBay, a 3’x8’ rug is hard to find. I failed.

·9 months agoDo a return....I bet you get a total refund and they don't want item back.
I have a feeling it is a 'drop shipping' item where seller ships from various locations.
These sellers should not be doing this.
That's where the 'partial refund' I see came in.
I don't think they want it back.

OP9 months agoJust finished the Return Form. I hope this gets resolved. Thank you to all who replied.

·9 months agoYou need to click return this item and select arrived damaged as the reason.

·9 months agoAlways begin your process to return a damaged or not as described order by using the Ebay MBG process to request a return.
The seller will be notified soon enough and will have ample time to make good on the sale before Ebay steps in. If the seller fails to send a prepaid return label within 3 days, request Ebay step in on day 4.
Buyers who have continued to do things the old way often find that they have lost the protections they deserve.

·9 months agoFile the claim now and return it. Get your refund upon return. You do not have to wait for the seller. You have rights which Ebay allows you to return the item if it arrives damaged or not as described. That's on the seller.
forever-green
OP9 months agoSo, I need to pay to return it to them? The auction said “No Returns†but I never suspected I would receive such a damaged item. I now need to invest in shipping costs?
bonjourami
·9 months agoNo, if you open a case, the seller is responsible to provide the return shipping label to you.If he does not, ask Ebay to step in, they will refund you without returning the rug. The seller may not want it back.
kensgiftshop
·9 months agoSeller pays return shipping.
Go to your purchase history and click return item and select, the item doesn't match the description as the reason.
The seller will have 3 days to accept the return and pay return shipping or refund without returning.
If they don't, return to the case on day 4 and ask Ebay to step in.

It's as @bonjourami stated, you pay nothing. File a NAD case (not as described), buyer has to supply return shipping label. If not, you ask ebay to step in, they refund you, don't make you return the item, and they ding the seller's account. Seller's 'No return' policy is moot once you open a case. Unfortunately, the days of taking the high road to "work things out" is an antiquated idea when it comes to a good many sellers these days.

OP9 months agoIt is sad that the “good old days†are gone. Over 1000 purchases and I have never left any negative feedback. I feel old.

·9 months agoSame here, I think I've left 2 negs since 2010. But it's the years of horror stories we hear about on these boards, that have hardened us to the point we give the advice we do.

·9 months agoI understand, but to maintain your buyer protections, handling it via ebay channels is the only way to fly these days.

·9 months agoYou have 30 days after delivery to open an item not as described case with eBay.
The buyer has 3 days to respond to your claim. No response? On day #4 you return to the case and ask eBay to step in.
The seller can: send you a return shipping label or let you keep it and refund you.
eBay's Money Back Guarantee offers good assistance when you have an issue. ALL buyers need to read it, understand it and use it in a timely fashion.
No, you don't need to "invest in shipping cost".

·9 months agoYou have 30 days to open a return on ebay.
I would quit communicating to sellers.
I would use reason 'not as described' as it's NOT new and this way, the seller has to pay for return shipping. Write down the tracking number and keep an eye on it; once delivered seller has 48 hrs to refund. If they don't, return to ebay return case and click 'escalate to ebay'. They will then force back a refund.
