Is there a point to get out of the deal when a package is semi-lost for weeks?

Summary: mattun expresses frustration about a pair of shoes that were lost in transit, noting they appeared in Hawaii after a long delay and are still there. wheelworkzmurfreesboro suggests opening an 'Item Not Received' case on eBay. eoma689485 explains that if the shoes shipped via ground, their appearance in Hawaii might be due to logistics and scanning delays. soh.maryl questions why a case was extended, and mattun clarifies that the shoes' unexpected route has led to eBay extending the case multiple times. kathiec advises that eBay will eventually resolve the issue in the buyer’s favor if the package remains undelivered.

I totally get that it's really nobody's fault when stuff gets lost in the mail and typically it will work itself out, but when do they actually pull the plug? I had a pair of shoes go from the authenticator to my local USPS distribution center, just sat there for two weeks, I opened an USPS investigation, nothing for another week, opened an eBay Lost Item, the shoes suddenly appear in Hawaii on the tracking for some bizarre reason (apparently they're on a wild ride), and now they've been sitting there for another week. Is there an actual give up date for eBay where they refund and/or redirect the item back to the seller if it's ever found?

Unless priority mail was purchased for the shoes, they went to Hawaii by ship, even it that is not where they were supposed to go - that's why you saw no activity for the week, and then suddenly they showed up in Hawaii. If you are not in Hawaii, hopefully those at the Hawaiian USPS distribution center will catch the mistake, and it will be shipped back by ship - so it won't show movement until it reaches California.

I had a package that took a 7 state tour once, took 35 days to arrive at my buyer's door, thankfully, he also enjoyed watching the tracking take it all over the U.S.

You know, that's a good point that I hadn't considered. "Ebay Shipping" is probably USPS Ground Advantage, not Priority. That would explain the three week disappearing act going to and coming back from Hawaii if they simply didn't scan it leaving the distribution center either time and maybe they have been continuously moving the whole time and not just sitting there.

Once an item is at least one day late per its EDD, the buyer can open an INR case. Why would a buyer not simply utilize the MBG and do that?

I'm the buyer. I did initiate a Item Not Received case. But eBay keeps extending it because the shoes magically showed up in Hawaii the next day after filing it. So my question is, when does eBay STOP extending it if say the shoes continue to ping pong to Alaska and Florida for another month?

If you've opened a case and then gone back and asked eBay to step in you've done all you can do. EBay makes every attempt to be fair to sellers as well as buyers in these cases. They'll eventually close the case in your favor if the package doesn't arrive, but no one can predict when that will be.

You can open an Item Not received case on the day after expected delivery.
