How do I report a seller wrongfully cancelling an order?
I've been watching an auction for the past week. I put a bid on it a few days ago and today upped the max bid much higher. The auction ended with me winning it for $29.99 (My max bid was $100) I had no sooner complete the purchase when I see the seller is canceling the transaction, pulling the "damaged or no longer available" option.
So...this was damaged/ NA but you didn't cancel the auction until someone won? No, as we all know its a case of this person was not happy with what it went for which is a risk all sellers take unless you list just BIN or put a reserve or a high opening bid.
I did not see an option to report the buyer when I clicked on the order, contact buyer, or anywhere else. Is there a way to do this other than directly contacting e-bay with the details?
Thank you

OP1 year agoJust to make things more interesting, I received a message from E-bay last night that they could not cancel the order, that there was an issue getting the refund. The message went on to say to let them know if I do not receive the item within the time frame given.
Not sure what happened that they couldn't get the money back, so now I guess I'll wait and then it will be filing an item not received claim because I doubt I'll get the item.
Haven't seen anything like this in the past.

·1 year agoFor a cancellation the seller has to fund the refund, eBay does not release any hold on the funds or stop payment to the seller's bank account. If the seller doesn't have a payment method set up to cover that, the cancellation does not go through.
But under the Money Back Guarantee eBay is contractually obligated to pay the buyer for items not received or not as described. If they can't get a refund immediately from the seller once it rules in the buyer's favor, then it comes out of eBay's funds and eBay then tries to collect from the seller.
So that's why you have to wait and go through the Item Not Received process to get your refund.

·1 year agoYes. The seller already reported themself by cancelling. You needn't bother.

·1 year agoPlease don't waste your time asking eBay to demand photographic proof it was damaged. That will never happen. The seller got a defect for canceling a transaction the buyer didn't ask to cancel. Move on.

·1 year agoThere does appear to be some need to review current policies & practices & their effectiveness related to seller cancellations/ failure to complete transactions
I would suggest ebay buyers should be encouraged to speak up & express their feelings to ebay which may hopefully bring about beneficial changes rather than more paying buyers continue to just silently move on & shop elsewhere
Help make & keep ebay healthy

·1 year agoWhy do you think the seller would not want to sell to you?
Did they relist?
Accidents happen…items get misplaced.
Give the seller a break…no negative feedback required.
Find another seller to purchase from.

OP1 year agoIts how it was handled. I have had an issue in the past where I could not find an item someone bought. But I waited a day to make sure I looked everywhere and sent the refund on my own with a message.
This cancellation was filed within five minutes of me winning. That's way to sketchy to see as being an actual issue. As for finding another seller? This was a mixed lot item of comics meant as a gift for my grandson who is leaving to go spend Chrismas with his father in a week, I'm now running out of time.
Sorry, I've been selling through different accounst since 2001. I know a lie when I see it and don't feel very forgiving when I've been burned every way possible as a seller and buyer and remain honest.

·1 year agoThe cancellation defect is more likely to affect the seller than any report you file.
If he has enough of them he will be paying an extra 6% on everything he sells for below standard performance.

OP1 year agoTrue, but in that case e-bay benefits by getting more fees and buyers continue to be done dirty. Not a great practice, but maybe I should not be surprised at this point.

·1 year agoSlow sales ? - why are there not more buyers this Happy Holiday Season?
Ii's convenient to blame the economy, or people don't want what your selling , & item prices, sadly ebay does appear to be giving insufficient attention to some unhappy purchase experiences that also negatively impacts sales.
Perhaps 2025 will be a year with beneficial changes

·1 year agoReport to ebay that you find the seller's action to constitute what you consider as being offensive conduct & want photographic evidence to support the claim of damaged or evidence of no longer available or alternatively receive a ebay courtesy coupon to help heal, since ebay fails in your opinion to adequately address & minimize the frequency of this occurrence to the detriment of paying buyers, which results in the pain & suffering of unhappy ebay buying experiences.
Help preserve the joy of shopping this holiday season

OP1 year agoThank you for the tip. Its frustrating because this was going to be a gift for someone, now I have to go find something else, but this would have been perfect.

·1 year agoIf the item was in fact truly damaged or out of stock, good customer service would suggest offering you a discount on a future purchase in my opinion.
Ebay is a business & as a business, each seller by their behavior makes them either an asset or a liability
Hopefully more joy in buying & selling will return on ebay in the near future

·1 year agoSeller still gets charged an eBay fee of the highest bid even if it has been cancel by seller.
Can a buyer leave feedback after purchase of an auction when item is cancelled?...I think so.
The seller got a 'ding' also.
Seller I think has already been punished to some extent...LOL

·1 year agoThe seller already got a "defect" when s/he cancelled the transaction for that reason. That is the primary tool eBay uses to weed out bad sellers, downgrading the selling status of those who get too many relative to their sales volume (as opposed to having to pay employees to actually investigate to see how likely it was that the seller had a legitimate reason to cancel vs. deliberate policy violations).
You may leave appropriate (calm, factual; be aware that the seller CANNOT end an auction that has ever had a bid in the last 12 hours except to sell to the high bidder, even if s/he does find damage etc.) feedback to warn future buyers/bidders. If the usual links have vanished, go to anyone's Feedback Profile (doesn't matter who, click on the feedback score in parentheses behind the username) then scroll down to below the last comment on that page to find a "Leave feedback" link that doesn't vanish (it brings you to a list of items you can leave feedback for).
Theoretically you could sue the seller for breach of the contract of sale (for the difference between the auction price and what you ended up having to pay for a replacement), but that is almost never practical.

·1 year agothe seller got an account defect for cancelling.
Others will likely chime in with the guidance to "report"
I have cancelled when I could not find the item that sold.

OP1 year agoHi,
I have also had to cancel in the past due to legit issues, but never within minutes of the auction ending, this was after I spent time looking and investigating why I could not find it or it ended up damaged somehow. I have also had to suck it up and eat money on an auction under performing because....I'm honest. This was beyond blatant.
It just upsets me because this is the spirit of e-bay. You start an auction at .99 and hope for the best, in this case he didn't feel the result was fair. Next time set a reserve or find another way to insure you get around what you want.
