HO Trains - Problems with Westside Cab Forward 4-8-8-2 Locos
Katsumi (KTM) built some pretty good brass cab forward 4-8-8-2 brass locos.
Later, Westside marketed some cab forwards. However, the design of the running gear is not the same as on the Katsumi models. The Westside models have a front and rear idler gear box. Unfortunately, the movement (swing) of the idler gearbox on the front engine is limited by the cut-out in the boiler. As such, the Westside model is a "rail straightener" (that is, is takes a large radius track to run the loco).
If use of a smaller radius curved track is desirable, it may be necessary to cut and hack away at front part of the Westside boiler to provide more movement (swing).
