"Grace period" delay of processing buyer payments on fixed price listings, doesn't alert seller that the item is sold, causing major issues/cancellations
Summary: churro15 discusses issues with a new 'grace period' feature on a popular online marketplace, causing delays in order processing. This feature allows sellers to unknowingly revise their listings before realizing an item has sold, leading to double listings and canceled orders. Despite contacting customer service, there seems to be little awareness or resolution of the issue. churro15 seeks advice on escalating the matter, as this has impacted both their account and their wife's account. janet9988 inquires about the reasons given for cancellations, which often cite 'Out of Stock' or 'damaged' as explanations.
***Apologies for the duplicate post... I posted it in the wrong category initially.***
This has now happened 5+ times on my purchases over the past 2 weeks.... not an isolated incident.
Here's how it works:
I buy a fixed priced item (of which the order status used to immediately go to "Paid"), now it goes into "Order Processing" status, and in the order details it displays a little message that says I have until such and such a time to make changes to my order (address/payment method/cancel), like 20-30 minutes or so (SCREENSHOT BELOW) . While all this is happening, the seller is unaware that his/her listing has sold. They are still allowed to revise their listing (which essentially changes the listing quantity to 2, or more if they do it again). Because I buy in a highly competitive collectible category, if I beat someone to a good deal, there are many other scummy buyers that will direct message the seller about the listing, offering a little more money for it. This has always happened, even before the grace period (which is another major issue I wish eBay would care about), but at least sellers would have to knowingly abandon the first and rightful buyer with a cancellation and defect. So some would still honor the first sale and do the right thing. But now during this grace period, the seller is unaware that it has already sold, and says, "oh someone is offering me more money than what I listed it for, well that's great" and they revise the price of the listing. They can also just decide they should revise their price on their own. However, once the "grace period" of my purchase payment ends and goes to "Paid" status, they have now sold the same item twice! Forcing them to cancel one of the orders (usually the first buyer (me) since it was at a cheaper amount).
So far, I've spoken to at least 3 eBay customer service reps, and they are completely unaware this "grace period" is even a thing, let alone that it is causing double/triple listings for sellers, and forced cancellations. I'm not sure this applies to everyone's account. It only started happening on my account about 3 or so weeks ago, and it just started happening to my wife's account out of the blue about 3 days ago. It is such a mess for frequent buyers like myself, as well as the sellers that are getting defects for their cancellations (but maybe eBay likes this as they can hike their fees).
I've been trying every avenue with eBay to get them to fix this, or remove the "grace period" thing from my account, to no avail of course. It's kind of crazy they would implement a major change like this leaving this huge loophole/glitch for it to mess up orders, yet to no one's surprise. They have confirmed there are no holds/restrictions on my account, no holds/delays from my banks/cards on the numerous payment methods I've used to test this, and the ebay service reps just conclude that the seller "shouldn't have been able to sell it after you already bought it" and shouldn't have cancelled your order. But, every single seller since this has been happening has stated they were completely unaware it sold prior to making their revisions to the listing.
I reached out to another seller after I bought a listing (who never cancelled or revised), and during this period of time he said it still showed as an active listing on his end.
Is this payment processing delay happening to anyone else, and/or screwing up their purchases or sales? Seems like an incredibly huge flaw in their system, one to be handled with urgency. It may only be an issue for me and the many sellers I buy from (and I buy a lot) currently, so who cares I suppose.... But, I expect many others will experience it at some point if they don't fix this soon.
Does anyone know what I would need to do to escalate this, or get this in front of someone's eyes who can actually help? Someone to tag or something?

OPAug 8, 2026 at 11:19 PM · EditedConfirmed, this is still majorly broken as of 8.8.26. My wife just purchased a listing. While it was in order processing, I saw the same listing she just purchased pop up again maybe 5-10 minutes later for sale for a higher price. Meanwhile, the "grace period" order processing continues for another 20 minutes or so. The "2nd" listing sold during that time. After our payment finally processed, the seller messages saying "the listing glitched" and had already sold, so he cancelled. His sold items show 2 separate listings sold. When I go to the one my wife purchased (viewing it using my own account) it says "This listing was ended by the seller on Sat, Aug 8 at 3:12 PM because the item is no longer available.". But on my wife's account when I go to the listing, it says "you purchased this item"! He was able to end and relist his item during the grace period, seemingly not knowing it had sold already, and it caused him to cancel hers because the other buyer's payment processed right away.
EBAY, please fix your broken new "grace period" system and either apply it to every account, or allow us to opt out of it! Who can help?
