Ebay using Auto Pay for Buy it Now purchases with Paypal
I've found a work around for the issue I've seen many people complain about for this issue. First let me describe it.
When choosing buy it now, and you choose paypal, the checkout button says "Confirm and pay". When you hit that button, the payment is processed automatically and you do not get to choose the payment or funding source for the transaction within paypal. This is an issue when you need to choose a different funding source than what it chose automatically.
The expected behavior, at least for me is to have the pop up come up and I get to choose the credit card or bank account I desire to pull the funds from.
I found the root cause why that change happens and some people have it while other people dont, it all comes down to the "Best Offer" feature. Since ebay wants to be sure you will pay for a best offer, they require an auto pay agreement for the feature, when setting up the auto pay agreement you get to choose the funding source once and all transactions afterwards uses that funding source (can be changed in paypal).
Now the really weird thing is.... this changes the buy it now paypal button to use the auto pay agreement that was setup for the best offer feature, so the buy it now paypal option no longer gives the option to choose a funding source.
The work around is to remove the agreement in paypal that was setup for the best offer feature. On the website for me (business account) it's:
Account Settings -> Payment preferences -> Mange Automatic Payments
Under Active it should list ebay, you might have to hit "More activity" to see them all. For me there was three, but I also used to have an ebay store so I'm sure one of those ties to that so be mindful of which ones get removed. For me it's the only one listed that only stated a Start date, Last billed amount and Last billed date doesn't show up on the correct one. Once you find the one you want to remove, hit the "Remove Paypal as payment method". It's kind of counter intuitive wording for this situation but that's on paypal's side lol.
I've reported this to ebay, but I suspect they will need more people to complain for them to fix the buy it now feature when you have an auto pay agreement from the best offer feature, unless this is the intended experience ebay wanted for their users, then I guess the solution is to never use best offers and offer the seller directly in a message.
Hopefully this helps some people to avoid over draft fees and such from this silly design mistake on ebay's part. If ebay had to pay those over draft fees, I bet this would be fixed a whole lot faster.

Most likely the payment source charged from your PayPal account, was the one you chose as your Primary one on that site. If you want to send offers and do not want your chosen primary source to be used, change it on PayPal before sending offers. I would do that a few hours before sending the offers.

OP2 years agoThe preferred payment method does not effect auto pay agreements. I tested that out and whatever was chosen on the agreement when it's setup for a best offer or I suspect bids too is what is used for buy it now with how it works currently.
On the best offer side of things where effectively ebay wants is a guaranteed payment, I don't think there's much option to fix the funding source situation there, that's probably a feature paypal would have to add for ebay, but I never looked into the API system behind it to see if there's a way ebay could give the user a prompt to change the funding source.
If you go into the settings below, I'm pretty sure it can be changed on paypal, but that's a lot of juggling and remembering on the buyer's end for something that should be really easy to do, spending money should always be very easy, or there are lost buyers. The issue is, if you have more than one agreement with ebay, it can be hard to find which one it is, and if you have used auto pay with many sites, then you have to scroll around to try to find the ebay one you want to change. A search option on the paypal side would make things a bit easier, but clearly that area of the site isn't used much so they didn't put as much effort into the user interface.

On the buy it now side, ebay does have control over which system they use for the paypal button, they happened to choose the more restricting option which doesn't give buyers the option to choose the payment source when there's an auto pay agreement on the ebay account.
Another possible solution is for ebay to allow you to add bank accounts and choose them as your funding source. Credit cards are allowed, so there's somewhat of a work around but in my case I'm looking to use a bank account.

Sounds like you might not understand how combined shipping works, unless I'm missing something in your post

·2 years agoI second this complaint. I made multiple offers to multiple sellers and all the charges from the accepted offers went through as individual sales. I did not get combined shipping and I had to try to match each sell to each seller. I was unaware of how it worked when I was checked my bank account and seen multiple charges instead of just one or two, it looked like I was being defrauded. This change sucks.

OP2 years agoI've always treated best offers like a single order, so if you're buying more than one item from a person, include the combined shipping discount within the offer for whatever shipping price comes up or contact the seller before hand. That's something I would like ebay to update as well, say add the products to your cart, then the ones from the same seller which also has best offer enabled, give you the option to make a best offer on the "lot" and use the automatic combined shipping system with that as well. Maybe the non-best offer items could be included in the offer, but the price cannot be changed so the seller knows what you're trying to buy as a whole.
Clearly if it's different sellers, there's no way for the items to be combined in the same box.
