Ebay system ate my gift card
Summary: checkwhatwebuy shared an issue where eBay gift cards redeemed through CapitalOne vanished during checkout, with the balance debited from PayPal. They contacted eBay, but were told that since the gift cards were not issued directly by eBay, there was nothing that could be done. ferncliff-39 suggested contacting the Gift Card team specifically and checking with CapitalOne. k00lstorybro experienced a similar issue and was advised to send in documentation but had no resolution. There was a discussion about eBay's customer service line and the possibility of writing to the CEO for further assistance.
I redeemed some CapitalOne shopping rewards with eBay gift cards, this morning, I input 4 codes in my account and $800 balance shown there, however, when I started to check out, the system quickly said my credit card did not go through (that's odd), then I changed to PayPal, however, all gift card vanished from the account, and the total balance was debited from PayPal. I thought that the balance will go back to my account, however, it just vanished without any trace.
I called eBay and the service lady checked my account and said that I did not redeem anything, no balance in my account either, I let her check the log of the gift card, but was told that the gift card was not issued by ebay directly, she can't do anything. I wonder whether anyone else have experience to let eBay trace the history, the gift card from rewards program is all Letters, but eBay says theirs is Numbers.
I do not know how to open a case to let eBay inner team to check the whole thing, please advise if you meet similar situation, thanks.

·3 weeks agoYeah you aren't the only one with this issue.
It seems to be some Authorization Payment Error that results in giftcard balance being withdrawn and it voids the giftcard balance, even though the purchase never went through.
It's really stupid and this needs to be fixed.

OP1 month agoI am familiar with ebay system, not scammer, EBAY has call back service and they will let you upload files in your account.

OP1 month agoYes,I provided all detailed proof, then they said that they can't determine the ownership, I think that we should write to CEO email address, then someone may investigate it again.

·1 month ago · Editedsystem also ate my $250 gift card. I added to my account and it was showing a balance so I know it worked and was successfully redeemed to my acct. I then tried checking out and I kept getting the red error message saying did not go through.. after a few times of trying, it just disappeared my gift card and when I enter the code manually in the gift code box, it says $0 balance. When I called customer service they told me to send in my gift card, handwritten note, receipt, which I did. But they still refused to return my gift card after their "determination"... not sure what to do from here either...
Followup: I think the issue might be that eBay flagged my address as a package forwarding service (a mailbox). I do use a mailbox service to receive high value packages for me during the day when I am not available to receive and to purchase items not sold in CA but sold in other states. But the crazy part is that eBay assumed/speculated/presumed that by shipping to a mailbox address, that I am going to ship it out of the country, which was against eBay gift card T&Cs to use it outside the US. But I order to myself, shipped from my mailbox address (in the US), to my address (in the US), and to make a wild speculation that I am intending to ship it out of the country and am using the gift card outside the US is...wild to say the least. I submitted proof to eBay of my entire mailbox shipment history for the last 2 years showing only domestic US addresses , so hopefully they reverse their baseless conclusion. If they don't, after being presented with evidence that their speculation/assumption was incorrect, then that's theft in my opinion.

You say you called customer service. EBay hasn't had an incoming customer service line since the pandemic. If you called a number you found on the internet it was likely scammers, to whom you have now sent your gift card and receipt. You were never communicating with eBay.

·1 month ago · Editedcapitaloneshopping give you a few percentage of your purchase when you shop on certain online store, then you can redeem your points from a few stores, eBay is on the listing.
eBay has call back service to talk to users. I do not know how to let them transfer to gift card team though. I will contact them again, if someone happened to meet the same situation, please share.

·1 month ago@1899mart You just have to ask whoever you end up speaking with if they are with the Gift Card team or not. You need a team member who specializes in Gift Card issues to help with this.
Did you also ask CapitalOne about the redemption code issue -surely you're not the only one this has happened to.
You were not able to add these cards to your eBay account - is that correct?
They would show in your Account Payments tab if they were added.

·1 month agoHow did you "call" or reach eBay - they don't have a number to call.
Did you speak with someone from the Gift Card team specifically?
Yes, eBay Gift Card redemption codes are numbers, not letters - physical cards don't have to be issued by eBay, but I assume digital cards do - which way did CapitalOne redeem your rewards?
