Ebay Sellers using used tracking numbers Scam shipping from UPS/FEDEX, USPS.
Summary: immoptions51 shared an experience of being scammed by sellers on eBay using old or fake UPS tracking numbers obtained from the dark web, leading buyers to believe their packages were delivered without revealing the true address. This practice lets sellers appear legitimate while evading detection by eBay and UPS. lokote2007 also reported losing $2600 due to a similar scam where a tracking number falsely indicated delivery, but eBay, PayPal, and their bank offered no recourse. Both participants warn others to be cautious of such scams.
i found 3 LEGO sellers , i am a victim of this shipping scam.
sellers post a old used UPS tracking number on the Ebay page, they use or find on the Dark web shipping labels from the state you live in. Ohio to HAwaii a tracking shows detail of moving package. BUT EBAY or UPS will not post the detailed house address for your package. sellers are using numbers from someone that has internal data logs of those used numbers. therefore sellers post it on your ebay purchase list package. when it says delivered !! Ebay sees it as you received it!!. Sellers get away with a bogus package.
the tracking never says your address on the UPS or FEDex tracking number. WOW ... !!

·3 months agoI bought a Schmidt and bender scope and they item was delivered I never got it, they provided a tracking number and everything how they did it I don’t know I opened up a case and it was ruled on their favor. Bottom line I lost $2600 bucks ebay didnt do anything PayPal didn’t do shit and my back couldn’t do and or didn’t do anything because I authorize the transaction and the item was delivered to my address according to the system how are they doing it I don’t know but please be careful out there there are people that have zero integrity whatsoever.

·1 year agoThat's terrible! Sorry you had to deal with that. eBay really needs to verify tracking better - maybe requiring full address match. You should definitely report those sellers if you haven't yet.

·9 months agoMy son just got scammed by this on a Lego set for Christmas. They are not old tracking numbers - they are real tracking numbers generated after you place your order, but they are for some other real shipment (not related to you or the seller) going to your state. The scam sellers are somehow able to get them and apply them to your eBay order. That is why if you go to the UPS website, you cannot get the proof of delivery because your zip code and the zip code from the actual address do not match. It’s really crappy that this is a known scam and yet it seems neither eBay or UPS care to investigate and stop it from happening. We contacted our credit card company so hopefully they will make it right. Sucks.

·9 months ago@the.gator.vault Often they are (kinda) related to the seller. They go and purchase some almost worthless item on another marketplace, ship it to a random address in your zip code, and use that tracking number for your order. Because privacy policies and laws mean that eBay only sees the zip code and a status of delivered, they don’t have any way to verify that it went to the wrong address. Some buyers have had success getting a letter on USPS letterhead from their post office stating that the item was not addressed to them or delivered to their address (USPS will not provide the address it was actually addressed or delivered to, but you don’t need that), and providing that to eBay. Others go to their credit card issuer, and so far they have tended to be easier to work with in most cases.

·9 months agoIn this case if he shipped something, it wasn’t to my zip code….again trying to get a proof of delivery photo (eg. Photo of item on the porch) from UPS requires you to enter a zip code and when I enter mine, it says it does not match and therefore won’t allow me to view/see it.

·9 months agoMy original reply was deleted….but why wouldn’t eBay make it part of their terms and conditions - if you have no feedback, you have to require that the seller provide proof of delivery and label photo. There are things that could be done to protect buyers. This seller ruined my kid’s Christmas.

The OP posted "sellers post a old used UPS tracking number on the Ebay page" If that is indeed what happened then your solution isn't how they should proceed. True the auto system will probably close the dispute in the seller's favor, but it is easily won on appeal if the tracking info was from an old label purchased before the purchase was made.
Skipping the INR system in favor of going the social media route might be better because then the OP can leave appropriate feedback.

I agree if the tracking (date) shows the label in question was initiated before the buyer even purchased the item, then yes they will have an easier time with this. However, I am not certain that the "old used" designation was applicable to this other than the tracking was already used for another shipment. People that are victims of this often don't know what to call these phony numbers anyway.
In this case perhaps the OP @immoptions51 will come back and clarify with some more specific information as to the dates these labels were initiated compared to the actual product purchase. Even an astute informed buyer needs a DIFFERENT CHOICE than INR which is usually an "instant lose" for the victim. There are some that are still denied on appeal even when they can obtain and provide the carrier evidence that used to be a requirement.
With the continued lack of eBay policy and guidelines for victims after all these years is still inexcusable. The MBG is still a fail, going to one's credit card and sticking with the INR idea, is risky business because eBay still responds with the same (albeit fake) delivery confirmation.
At least now a buyer has some choices, and if they come here get information on what NOT to do as well. It is disheartening the eBay won't provide that information. It is not like they don't know about this problem.

"sellers post a old used UPS tracking number on the Ebay page".
If a seller posted a tracking number that was created before you made your purchase you should be able to get a refund, but it will be by appealing the original decision. If you filed an Item Not Received (INR) dispute and it was turned down by ebay's computers, in the message you received telling you that, there should be an Appeal button. When you appeal you can write a message saying the label was created before you made your purchase, then post a screen shot of the tracking info showing that. A real person can look at the info and overturn the original decision and a refund issued.
If the label was created after you made your purchase that is a different issue, and harder to get resolution for. It might help if you post the ebay item number for one of the listings.
"the tracking never says your address on the UPS or FEDex tracking number. WOW ... !!"
The delivery address does not show on any tracking info. USPS does not show the delivery address on their tracking pages either. None of the shipping services post the delivery address on tracking pages due to Federal privacy regulations, because that info is semi-public and anyone who has the number could see it.

OP1 year agosome one is getting tracking numbers (from internal UPS or FEDex employees ) for the sellers after they sell the item. they are looking for 5 day delay and then post a tracking# to your nearest address code. because ebay and paypal can not see exact home address to confirm delivery . they automatically say item was delivered to you. i have opened investigations case to my UPS,ebay....BUT Paypal did help me...all i need to do is get a proof delivery address reprint label and send to paypal for refund.
BUT it is very hard to get it!!! UPS stores will not give it to you. i had to call Billing Department UPS to get me a reprint. sellers are the only ones who generate the labels. if the seller runs!! you cant get the label for the fake scam tracking #.
the only way to beet them is do a damage item received return. and send them an empty envelope. those seller wont send there return address.
