Ebay Project
Hello fellow Redditors,
I'm working on a school project where I'm examining eBay and identifying areas for potential improvement. I'd like to share my thoughts and gather your input. Here are my observations:
Complexity: eBay can be quite complex, especially for newcomers. The abundance of features and options can be overwhelming and might take some time to navigate. Have any of you also found eBay to be a bit too intricate?
Visual Clutter: The eBay homepage can sometimes feel overloaded with product listings, ads, and various information. This visual clutter can affect the user experience. Have you noticed this as well?
Search Functionality: While eBay boasts a powerful search function, I've heard that some users struggle to find specific items due to inaccurate search results or an excess of filters and options complicating the search. Have any of you encountered similar issues?
Now, let's discuss potential improvements. Here are a few ideas I have:
Streamlined User Interface: eBay could consider making the user interface more intuitive, particularly for newcomers. A more user-friendly experience could enhance platform adoption.
Addressing Visual Clutter: Perhaps eBay could work on a cleaner and better-organized homepage to increase the relevance of items and information.
Enhanced Search Functionality: Focusing on refining search algorithms and offering user-friendly search options could significantly improve the search experience.
What do you think? Do you agree with these identified issues, or do you have other concerns? Your input would be invaluable for my school project, and I look forward to hearing your thoughts on how eBay can evolve and improve.
Thanks for reading and for your valuable contributions!

If you had been a long time buyer/seller on the site, it would be easier for you to write your paper, as you could compare the features from the early days to what it has evolved into in more recent times.
1. Complexity: Learning to buy on the site is not very hard at all. However, some things such as ebay's auction bidding format, is often questioned.
However, when it comes to selling on the site, the information from back in the early days which only took about an hour to go through including the time it took to view the instructional video and take the test on the subject matter, has turned into a several hour long search through policies that are jumbled together in no particular order, with important information being buried somewhere in the middle of the mishmash.
There used to be a fairly easy to navigate A-Z index of ebay policies. Unfortunately the policies were rewritten and reformatted so that it is very difficult to navigate, and much valuable information was deleted. Most of the rewrites were done starting in 2008 by Millennials aka Gen Y employees, who had little if any real life experience in retail and retail marketing.
The rewrites have been continued by Gen. Y.1 & Y.2 employees who have even less real life experience, or experience with ebay in the years from 1995 to around 2004 when the site started transitioning from a site geared towards the sale of unique and unusual items to the sale of mass produced products.
2. Visual clutter: Most of us here have set our ebay landing page to My eBay Summary, to avoid the home page's ads and clutter. However, the clutter does appear on listing pages which breaks up the product/item information with ads. At the top of this page is a topic one has to request being accepted to participate in. It makes for some interesting reading. We are testing a new View Item experience...
3. Search Functionality: Ebay changed its search function in 2013 with the roll out without testing of its Cassini search engine, which drew a lot of criticism. It took the company 2 years to admit it should have been tested more thoroughly, but its upgrades continue to upset buyers. In the last few years, ebay dropped many categories one could use to search with. All of us have been upset by search results displaying extraneous items that have no relation to the search terms or even the category chosen for the search.
At the upper right corner of this page, there is an envelope symbol click on it in a little while when you see a number over it.

·2 years agoThere is no improvement which would be unanimously accepted by the Ebay user community.
Someone's ox is always being gored.
Visual cutter removal would mean removal of sponsored listings, an increasing source of Ebay revenue - a non-starter.
Ebay's search and every other marketplace's search is not what many people think a search should be. Such searches are biased toward a quick and trouble-free sale, and make many sellers feel cheated out of their time in the spotlight.
If you want to write a paper on these issues, make Etsy your subject - it is far inferior to most marketplace sites.

Your project should be titled "Don't waste your time trying to change eBay" because it ain't gonna happen.
