Ebay AUTOMATICALLY charged my payment 4 hours of auction's end without my knowledge/permission
I called ebay customer service to ask what was happening and was informed that ebay has changed to a policy of "Shop more and ship together" or "Shop and Ship separately" , but when the rep directed me to the policy information on the Place Your Bid page, no such information was displayed. Ebay having failed to display this new policy to me as a buyer removed the possibility of my opting out of it and resulted in NO possibility of a combined shipping discount from the seller who ALWAYS gives a shipping discount once she knows I am ready to pay for a combined order. It is unfair of ebay to take away my right to pay this or any other seller on a schedule that has been satisfactory to us both as longtime transaction partners and to make extra work for sellers who now are left to refund the difference between the combined shipping cost of the past and the new higher shipping costs. Major mess, ebay.

eBay's "auto pay" has been driving buyers and sellers crazy for a couple of years now. It has prevented sellers from being able to send combined shipping invoices since payments for multiple auction wins are done immediately after an auction closes. They have foisted it on sellers without their knowledge. There are two things you can suggest that they do to stop auto pay from being used on their auctions.
1) Message your seller(s) and tell them to look in ebay's Announcements for "Exciting News For Auction Sellers Who Combine Shipping". Or have them come to these boards and look in the right hand column for the link. It was introduced on December 17, 2024.
2) Ask your seller to go to their Buyer Requirements/Management page and to look below the standard requirements for; Buyer Rules and uncheck Require buyers to provide a payment method before they place a bid / send an offer. Those are the triggers for auto pay.
FYI. You can no longer call ebay directly to speak to reps. If you looked up a customer service phone number online, you never spoke to someone from ebay. If you gave them any account information you may want to consider changing your password. The only way to reach ebay is by using the help & contact button at the bottom of any ebay page fill in some info and request a call back. evan then the reps who call you can't help with ebay policies.

OP1 year agoI cannot thank you enough for the detailed information you have shared about this ebay policy; very kind of you to impart these instructions and I will do as you suggest (getting in touch with the seller).

When you are required to provide a payment source PRIOR to submitting a bid or offer, your seller retains the "Buyer Rules" that will prevent combined shipping and results in you being "auto-billed" for each transaction separately for each item. This also limits the payment options you can use.
Sellers who wish to encourage multiple sales to the same buyer can turn them off here:
https://www.ebay.com/bmgt/buyerrequirements
Buyer Rules:
*Require buyers to provide a payment method before they place a bid.
*Require buyers to provide a payment method before they make an offer.
Unfortunately, once eBay enrolls your Buyer ID into forced compliance to put up that payment source, you are going to have the same problem with ANY seller who retains these. Some sellers that are not interested in providing a combined shipping model anyway think it is wonderful. Long time buyers do not appreciate being treated like a shady buyer right from the start.
