eBay adds items from your cart to your order at checkout
I attempted to purchase a single item from my cart. I went to checkout as usual, and clicked "Confirm and pay." However, I didn't see that eBay had ADDED SEVERAL ITEMS TO MY ORDER, without my consent. eBay does not make this salient, and I feel this is a dirty trick.
Has this happened to anybody else?

·5 months agoThey popped it up as an offer for me to buy and I declined but it would be easy in haste to mistakenly accept it to get it out of your face and finish the order…. Be vigilant.
A lot of **bleep** is happening on the eBay Wild West that eBay is allowing under the ‘doesn’t violate eBay guidelines’ rationale which could land a buyer the headache of waiting to open a case for a refund and chase their money to get it back. All sorts.
I bought a voucher for streaming service. The code comes up invalid immediately upon attempting to redeem it upon receipt meaning it could be truly fake invalid, already used, or what have you. Now comes the chase to be made whole again. Seller somehow got a phone number to reach out to me but my phone number is not open to anyone in my privacy settings. Don’t buy these things. Too many ways I see now to get scammed…
I bought another item with all bagged accessories pictured and upon receipt it arrived in a different box and one bag missing that contained, among other things, a key that allows access to to install or replace a SIM card.
I bought a phone that potentially had the battery health reset to 100%.
BEWARE - CHECK YOUTUBE AND THE INTERNET TO SEE THIS APPARENTLY IS AN EASY THING TO DO FOR THOSE WHO STAND TO GAIN AND HAVE THE WHEREWITHAL TO DO SO. WHEN YOU REALIZE HOW EASY IT IS YOU’LL THINK TWICE ABOUT BUYING USED IPHONES FROM ANYONE.
These 3 purchase experiences happened in the span of a week. You can’t make this stuff up.
Watch the brand new iPhones going for ridiculously low to midpoint prices often by new sellers with no feedback. Can’t imagine any of those sold listing buyers will actually get their phone. Most likely are buying nothing more than a hassle to chase their money…. This scam happens to all sorts of things on here - the more popular and expensive the more likely you’ll find scams.
So, don’t be upset that eBay needs to increase sales by jamming offers under your nose at checkout to keep their stock price up or whatever, and upper management maybe can get their performance bonuses. Be more worried about what sellers they are and whether they’re reliable and trustworthy, and the rest of this garbage going on.

It is up to a buyer to vet a seller before they purchase an item, i.e. what kind of track record they have; what their feedback looks like: do they have any negatives and what their responses looks like, if any; what kind of feedback they leave for others, etc. Also where they are located, although some foreign sellers state they ship from the U.S. when they do not.
You do know that anything you buy on eBay has a Money Back Guarantee if it arrives in a different condition than described? All you have to do is file a "return this item" claim and follow the instructions. Perhaps a bit of a hassle to have to return something but you do get your money back. This even applies to listings that say "no returns" which, per the MBG, does not apply if the item is not as described.

·5 months agoThere is user error involved here somewhere, I'm certain of it. Been here 29 years & not only never once had that happen, never even heard of it, until this thread. If this was a regular problem, I promise you the boards would be positively LIT UP about it.
But it is a good practice to use the Watch List for items you're thinking about & the Cart for things you want to buy. I don't understand people who use the cart as a holding area. I once was explaining to a buyer how to pay for the item they wanted from the cart & she said it wouldn't work b/c she had 300 items in her cart! That's ripe for confusion & error. Even if it's just 20 items.
I realize that's not what the 2 of you are saying happened, but with a slip of a mouse you can accidentally put something in your carts, so perhaps when you were looking for your DVD, you slipped & added another one. There is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY a seller can get their item into anyone's cart! We don't even know who has our items in their carts. Sorry, but user error is involved here somehow.

·5 months agoThat is nonsense. I’ve been buying on eBay for several decades and have never had items just show up in my cart and paid for them.
Sounds more like the user using their cart as a watch list and not paying attention when paying.

·5 months agoThe extra items, for me at least, don't show up in my get-ready-to-pay cart - they show up beside the cart asking me if I want to add them. I just find it annoying ... another advertising gimmick by eBay just like the 'buy similar' stuff showing up on your pages.

·5 months agoOkay. Now, you are saying the items weren't actually IN your cart but beside it, as suggestions to buy (advertising gimmicks, as you call them). eBay puts those suggestions to buy everywhere. Doesn't mean you are forced to buy or pay for.

·5 months agoOkay, so I chose the wrong word ('in' my cart as opposed to 'beside' my cart). Sorry for that. My complaint is about the advertising which annoys me as as does sellers when their competitors items show up on their listings. No reason for the personal attacks, and, I am not a lady.

·5 months agoIf I lied, like you state, it would mean I said an untruth on purpose. I simply got this thread mixed up with another one in my mind, and screwed up. No big deal in my world and I would prefer not to chase posters around just to pounce on them when they mess up in the forum world.
I apologize to anyone who is thinking about quitting eBay due to my earth-shattering, conspiracy driven statement that is not correct. I have no hidden agenda. The fact that I despise the current state of advertising, everywhere, is well known to my friends and I am disappointed to see eBay cashing in on the trend by keeping it in your face with more and more screen space being wasted and more effort needed to weed through all the junk to find out what you might be buying.
To err is human .... but why must I be so human ... must have something to do with that wacky-tabaccy that I breathe in everytime I go to the mall.

When you are on a website, like Amazon, Walmart, Home Depot etc. you can 'add things to your cart'.
Then, when you go to PAY, ALL items are being paid for unless you
a.) choose to JUST pay this item
b.) 'remove' or 'delete' the OTHER items in your cart.
ALL sites operate this way.

That is to say, I added ONLY ONE ITEM to my cart.
At checkout, there were SEVERAL ITEMS in my cart.
HOW DID THE OTHER ITEMS GET THERE? (sorry for yelling, but, you know ...)

Myself I have only used the cart function a couple of times in years of buying when I was buying multiple items from the same seller. I put them in the cart right before I purchased.
Other than that I put them on my watchlist and skip the cart altogether and just buy them directly from my watchlist.

·5 months agoBut you didn't really answer the question. And I'd like to know from @gutterbunny2 also. Were they items that you had previously looked at or had put on your watch list or had added to your cart on another occasion (and maybe forgot about)? Or were they just random items that you had no idea what they even were and had never seen before?
Sellers do not have the ability to put items in anyone's cart, and no, they can't pay for this "privilege". With more than 17 Million sellers on eBay, can you imagine what a can of worms that would be? And they do not know who adds anything to their cart or if they remove it so no, they would not know they are "losing sales".

I have no idea where these other items came from. I know they were not things that I had looked or, watched, or any interest in. The only thing that was common to what I was looking for was that the added items were DVD's.
I was looking for 'The FBI' and 'someone' or 'something' added 'Sesame Street', also on DVD.
To sum up, I honestly have no idea where they came from! The next time this happens, I will try to grab a screen shot and come back to this. Maybe you can figure it out ... I'm a rookie in the new eBay.
ETA: Yes, they were random items, apart from the DVD part.

I use the cart when I am looking for multiple items from the same seller.

·5 months agoSounds like another one of those 'deals' that you have to manually opt out of, or you just bought the farm. The CYA statements that eBay includes (in your post) only puts the onus on you to be really careful before you click on anything. My best advice is to empty the cart and look somewhere else (sorry, sellers of my first choice).
I thought this was illegal, but in this era who knows!
Besides, the above eBay blurbs refer to items put in the cart by the buyer ... not by eBay or other sellers
This is why and how I use the cart (if available on a listing):
I find an item I like. I want to look at the seller's other listings to see if there is something else I want to add, so I add the item I am looking at to the cart ... sorta' like a placeholder and, maybe I can get a deal on combined shipping.
I find nothing else, so I go to the cart to make my one item purchase. When I get there, there's three or four items added to my cart from somewhere. Confusing me, I empty the cart and find the item I want from some other seller.
Do sellers pay for this ability to have their items put in random carts?
Are sellers of the items I put in my cart aware that they are losing sales due to this?

·5 months agoIt's happened to me a couple of times. It looked a little 'fishy' to me and unfortunately both sellers of the item I put in the cart lost out. I was wondering how I would pay if I bought all the items eBay added to my cart ... a whole bunch of payments going to different sellers including some that I would never buy from ...
