Double taxes (EU)
I'm located in EU and since 2021 buyers have to pay taxes for items shipped from non-EU countries, it's pretty clear.
For me, eBay automatically apply VAT during checkout. My expectation is that I don't have to pay VAT at post office. However post office request me to pay VAT again for one of recent orders (the item is not a subject for additional import taxes). I've contacted PO and received a very generic response like "The item was received from non-EU country and you have to pay VAT as per new import policy". They don't have information that I already paid VAT during checkout, so I'm taxed twice for the same item: during checkout and at PO.
I've checked this article: Paying tax on eBay purchases | eBay and "Items delivered to EU countries – Value Added Tax (VAT)" section and there is a mention:
"buyers may need to pay additional import fees (e.g. VAT and duties) as part of clearing their parcel through customs, or when their order is delivered"
But it's not true with my recent order.

The seller (that you bought from him) should wrote (Ebay's IOSS number) on the package so customs agents in your country can see it.
if your seller did that, you wouldn't pay a double VAT taxes.
But if you want ebay to refund you the VAT that you charged by ebay, here the process as following:
1) After you paid the VAT to the postal service, make sure you got a receipt/invoice.
2) Go to https://ocsnext.ebay.com/ocs/mudcwf?deptName=CollectRemitRefund
3) Then upload a scan of the receipt/invoice, and describe the issue (basically describe that the postal service required VAT to be paid again for your specific order number after it had also been paid to eBay).
4) Wait for eBay to respond, hopefully they are able to match your order info and document upload to process the refund, and then wait a bit more for the refund to processed back to your payment method.
Good Luck!

·3 years agoI live in The Netherlands and purchased an item from a seller in Japan. The item arrived quickly and is super, but I was charged VAT by both eBay and Postal Services. This morning I followed the procedure as described by "aqeeqsouq". Not only did it work (I am getting a refund of double paid VAT), but the eBay support experience was simply amazing! Seriously, these guys know what they are doing. At the end I posed the question what I as a customer can do to avoid the same issue in the future. FYI, part of the response I got from eBay support:
"I understand that you want to know that as a buyer what you can do to avoid double VAT situation. Please let me explain this to you. Art, I would like to share with you that this situation arises when the seller forgets to mention the IOSS number on the parcel or forgets to send the IOSS details electronically to the shipping service. For international shipments as a buyer you can request the seller to mention the IOSS related data on the parcel label and also advise them to send the IOSS related details properly to the shipping service electronically. Alternatively, for future transactions; you can purchase items from EU sellers having warehouses in EU countries. In such transactions VAT does not get applied during checkout on eBay."
And there you have it. Hope this will be of help to anyone.
Best,
Art

·2 years agoI'm a seller and I provide the IOSS number clearly and CN22 paperwork on all of my parcels to the EU and I am seeing a marked rise in this happening with my customers. I suspect I'm not the only seller who is regularly getting complaints from customers despite all of the relevant info being provided
