Customs duty - US buyer purchasing from Japan
Hello everyone,
I am a US buyer interested in purchasing a pre-owned Cartier ring from a seller in Japan. The ring is priced at $1,770.00 and EBay will charge around $168.15 in taxes at the time of purchase, total of the ring price including tax $1,938.15. Do I have to pay customs duty for ring as well? If so, how much can I expect to pay? I live in Los Angeles California.
Thank you in advance for your help - I’ve been trying to figure this out, but haven’t found any accurate/up-to-date information.

·2 years agoIs the ring going through the Authenticity Guarantee program? If so, you might also have the option of prepaying custom fees when you pay for the ring. There was a poster on here not that long ago who had that option but they chose to not prepay. Then when they received the item, the custom fees were quite a bit higher than if they had prepaid. I don't know if that would happen in your situation but if the prepay custom fees option is available, you might want to take advantage of that.

Everything You Need To Know About Import Costs From Japan - USA Customs Clearance
A big concern for me would be........................... are the customs fees refunded if the item needs to be returned?

·2 years agoSince the custom fees aren't on the listing, they would have to be payed to the government when the item is delivered/picked up. If there was a return, the buyer should be able to apply for a refund of the custom fees from the government. That's how it works in Canada so I suspect that it is similar in the US.

·2 years agoSince jewelry is consider a luxury item the maximum amount before Customs/Duty taxes are levied is $800.00
The $168.00 you see listed is only the regular tax that eBay is obligated to collect. You would pay additional customs/ duty on the value over $800.00 USD when it arrives in the USA before it would be delivered to you. I don't know what the rate is but it's not cheap.

< Do I have to pay customs duty for ring >
I read the entire article at https://www.cbp.gov/trade/basic-import-export/internet-purchases and came to the conclusion that I'd rather walk into Cartier's brick and mortar store and buy my ring there. It seems that the importation process is, well not easy, but easier until the value of the item reaches a threshold. My takeaway from the bureaucratese is that at $2500 the process becomes an order of magnitude more difficult. Read the article for yourself ... I hope that you can learn something more confidence-inspiring. Good luck.
