I found a car on Facebook marketplace for $1400 which includes shipping and delivery to me says she wants to use ebay payment protection plan..I don't know if this is a scam..she sent me an email saying the reason she was selling the car for cheap was because her son passed away and the car is a daily reminder of him( biking accident) I have never bought a car this way so is this a scam?????

·2 years agoBuying a car "sight unseen" is usually a bad idea, that includes Carvana and Vrooom.
For you to buy a car you need the cash but you also need to get, in exchange for your money, a car, a title, and the keys or fob or whatever it takes to make it go vroom. These three things (title, car, and keys) are tangible, physical items you can touch, feel and see. So anytime you are making a serious purchase (such as a car) you should always make sure you can physically see, touch and feel those three items before handing over your cash.
I'll make it simple:
ALWAYS buy a car in person.
NEVER buy a car "sight unseen."
One more time: NEVER give anybody your hard earned money without first seeing the physical merchandise for sale, you want to be able to touch, feel and see the car, and you want to make sure the seller has the title and the keys as well.
This actually applies to any large purchase, but especially a car.
That said ebay / facebook do not correlate sales. While it is possible to advertise a car on Facebook that is listed on ebay, that isn't what sellers normally do.
So yes that is a scam, totally.

·2 years agoIt's not the BIGGEST SCAM on eBay!! Because it has nothing at all to do with eBay.
It's actually the BIGGEST SCAM on Facebook Marketplace. Or Craig's List. Or wherever these people are finding these great deals on vehicles and are being told the sale will go through eBay for their protection.

Oh, yeah, this way is a scam.
And if you've never bought a car this way... stick to the old way. See it, touch it, drive it to your mechanic... you know, do the fun stuff. It's the only way you'll feel good about the purchase down the road... pun intended. Good catch and good luck.

·2 years agoYes it's a SCAM. That is a liar and thief that wants to steal your money. eBay never assists in sales of payments of items on other sites. It has to be listed on eBay to be an eBay sale. There is no other way.
Anytime a seller adds info that is not part of the sale it's a big red flag of a scam

Also eBay will NEVER tell you to pay with gift cards.

·2 years agoIf/when you express further interest, you will be told to pay with eBay gift cards and that the scammer will not redeem those cards til he knows you are satisfied with the car. To that end, he will ship the car to you at his own expense. If you didn't see how crazy this was before that, that should convince you. Who ships a vehicle to a total stranger for a trial period?

eBay has nothing to do with stuff you find on other websites.
It’s always a she. There is always urgency (death, deployment, divorce).
Stop communicating with this thief. Find something local that you can look under the hood, test drive, kick the tires, look the seller in the eye when you pass him cash and he gives you the title.
