Buying Wet Cat Food Internationally?
Hi,
I run a small rescue and I try to cut corners everywhere I can but I won't waste my money or put their health at risk, so I have questions to those of you that have bought cat food from non US sellers.
For instance, I can buy the Friskies cheaper from some of them than I can drive down and buy at Walmart. I don't understand it since it says on Friskies that it comes from the US.
I am a seller here (and mostly to take care of the zillion cats.. lol) , so I would like to spend my money here. I am a little hesitant on this one. Should I be?

·10 months agoIt’s smart to be cautious — buying pet food internationally can risk differences in formulation, storage, or expiration standards. If the price seems too low, confirm the seller’s legitimacy and ensure the food is factory-sealed and within date. Supporting local sources may be safer for your cats’ health.

·2 years agoJapan surprises me, since they are a First World country with strict regulations on food.
The European Union would also be a reliable source, at least the "never Soviet" nations.
But with a First World country, you are also looking at First World shipping costs.
Canada is in an interesting position.
EBay Canada is offering deeply discounted US Tracked Parcel rates just now.
And the Canadian loonie is trading at 66 c USD.
There may be some bargains to be had on eBay Canada.

·2 years agoWestern countries take care of their pets and pet food seriously, especially the US. Manufacturer has to follow certain guidelines and disclose contents and manufacturing plants are regulated. The same thing is hard to tell for pet food ordered from abroad. In lots of countries, pets are not that high priority, that's a fact. Shared my observation, hope that helps.

I would suggest that any counterfeiter could get that printed on the package. Generally, they have no honor.

·2 years agoThis childless cat lady rains blessings on your head for your rescue efforts. 😻😻 But I would never trust an unknown seller to buy my cat food from. There are too many horror stories about tainted pet food from Japan.
I second the recommendation for Chewy. Their prices are very competitive, and they have an autoship program that will save you at least 10% on every order. I've been using it for years. Plus they have exceptional customer service.

My local supermarket stopped carrying my cats’ favorite cat food during the pandemic … so I began buying it online for the first time. That was when I experienced the ‘Fake tracking number scam’ for the first time … from several different selling venues. It was 4-5 times within a 2-month period.
This may have been just a coincidence … but I thought it best to warn you.

OP2 years agoThank you for that update about your ordering experience and thank you to everyone that responded. It was I suspected, not worth the risk.
Also, thanks to those carrying the weight with the Ferals.
The cat situation is really out of hand. I am not sure where the country is headed. I am blessed to have homed the ones I have, and blessed to have the misfits that remain.
They are all characters in their own right. 🙂

·2 years agoWe have a small feral cat group on the property that houses our various businesses, and a number of us have adopted numerous cats ourselves, so I fully understand your concerns. Honestly, I've found Chewy to be very reliable, and on par with Sam's club in price. Plus they offer free delivery on orders over $50.00, and it's delivered within 2 days. For all the reasons already stated by others, I'd avoid food or medicine purchases outside of the US.

I did see a post the other day that a buyer bought 3 cases of cat food and never received it.
It was sent FedEx and the delivery address zip code was different.
Buyer was still jumping through hoops for the delivery scam to try to get money back.
I would think 2 or 3 times about it.
Sometimes there is a reason for the too good to be true price.

·2 years agoI would never purchase outside of the US or Canada. Other countries do not have the same regulations as us and there have been instances in the news where foreign made pet food contained unsafe ingredients.
