BUYERS BEWARE THEFT!!! Ebay continues to erroneously charge tax on tax exempt items.
It appears Ebay is charging tax on tax exempt items and doesn't seem to care much. I live in WA state and precious metals/bullion is tax exempt. I've never had any issues with multiple online retailers following this, and for some time Ebay had been following it to, correctly charging/collecting no tax on these items. However for some unknown magical reason this has suddenly changed and almost all my purchases are now being incorrectly charged this tax. I contacted Ebay support and they are a joke. The first person I got tried to make every excuse and argue the law with me which can be found here: https://apps.leg.wa.gov/WAC/default.aspx?cite=458-20-248 and is even included on their own faq pages. He refused to transfer me to a supervisor. I finally got in touch with someone who was aware of this issue and they claim the only way to correct and handle this problem is, (are you sitting down?) to call in, each time, give them the order information, and they will e-mail their tax group and get back to you 10 days later. I dug into some posts here and it seems this has been a known problem for some time and this is their proposed long term solution??? Unacceptable. Ebay an online commerce giant is knowingly collecting tax on tax exempt items to who knows how many unsuspecting users for unknown thousands? hundred thousands? of dollars. In this digital age and with the size and resources of a company like Ebay it is absolutely ridiculous that they cannot update their software to fix this. This is essentially theft. I have filed a complaint with the WA state AG office and encourage others to do so here: https://www.atg.wa.gov/file-complaint as well as the WA state department of revenue here: https://dor.wa.gov/forms/suspect-fraud Ebay is aware, has been aware of this and continues to collect taxes on tax exempt items ILLEGALLY. This is headed to a class action lawsuit.

·2 years agoThey don't care. I've purchased a few clothing items and clothing and food is not taxable in my state. They agreed I should not have been charged tax and eventually I received a credit. We're talking under a buck in most cases. Last April I contacted them again because I was charged tax on a baseball cap. They told me to wait 60 days and after nothing happened I contacted them in July. The rep said he would make my request priority and I still have not received a credit. My guess is that they figured I'll get tired of wasting my time contacting them and I'll give up which I did but they've lost a lot of money as I refuse to ever buy clothing again. Next step is contacting the AG of my state. At some point in the future I'm sure someone will contact an attorney and file a class action suit against them. Maybe then I'll get what they owe me plus a little more.
