Being forced into inflexible payments
Is it possible to add Pay pal credit on offers? I really despise the way eBay has taken away a lot of the flexibility, enjoyment, and ease of buying by making checkout and offers so rigid. By not leaving payment for after an offer has been made, instead of how it used to be causes unnecessary problems for buyers. I am wanting to both bid and make an offer and want to use Pay pal credit for checkout for both transactions. Is there a way? The auto payment after an auction is also disgusting. Less freedom in checkout can mean less buying as some people like to combine ship and need flexibility to finesse payment. eBay’s draconian changes to its platform reflect the increasing Totalitarianism in society. America is losing its freedoms and this is very evident on eBay today.

·8 months agoeBay autopay has failed each time the card has been locked, a few times a year (19 times since Nov 2024, 13 months ago) for several years now. But the card is locked at least twice as many more times as most offers are not accepted hence an autopay is not attempted.
And of note as Chief Bright Light points out, a pre-authorization hold is placed on the card. So the idea of presenting a card with almost no available balance left for autopay, would not work.

The point was not that it won't work. The point is that if you lock your credit card frequently the card issuer may wonder why you lose your card so often and reevaluate your risk to them. You say you've only done it a few times a year, which will fly under the radar. Doing it every week may not be so lucky.

·8 months agoWhy I think I’ve understood it’s an issue, is that PayPal Credit doesn’t offer a way to place a pre-authorization hold, which is required because they don’t actually charge the card if the offer is not accepted, but they have to make sure that it is available to be charged when you submit the offer.

·8 months agoYes @couturehomecollection it's really simple.
Pick a credit card with almost no available balance left, and use that as your default autopay.
So when your bid wins or your offer is accepted it will default, and you will have to pay another way e.g. with PayPal Credit.
Or just lock your credit card, and the autopay will fail.
Here's a picture, for those of us unsure with how to lock a sacrificial credit card account.
eBay already knows how we maneuver this, as those words "your autopay failed" didn't write themselves.

Unfortunately you need a card with no or little available balance for that to work. For anyone who actually manages their credit (or pays their balance every month) it's not a possibility.

Agreed. I wouldn't have a card with 'little or no available balance' but hadn't thought of @yo0339's "lock your credit card".

·8 months agoThe problem with locking and unlocking your credit card is that card issuers tend to frown on people doing it frequently. It's intended as an emergency measure to be used if you misplace your card.

Aha! Note to self: So don't do that, either. ðŸ˜

eBay does allow buyers to pay with their PayPal accounts.
It's been a while since I've use PayPal, but isn't it possible for you to add one -- or more -- of your credit cards to your PayPal account? That way you can pay with a credit card, through PayPal.
You can even choose your preferred credit card for selected items you buy on eBay.
You might choose to use a Discover card for clothing, but Bank of America for car parts and/or accessories.
Thus, you have all the flexibility to pay your credit card that its issuing bank/company has always offered you.

·8 months agoThe issue isn't using a credit card. The issue is that Paypal Credit offers a 6-month no interest option on purchases $149+.

OP8 months agoExactly, @kathiec! Thank you and for others that actually see the problem and aren't just eBay parrots and apologists. I admire you for standing up for what is right. It used to be a lot easier to get a truly good deal and pay for it over time (6 months and even occasionally 12 months) with no interest. @jlckp is right, I know it hurts some sellers also, besides being a major pain for buyer. At least they added combined shipping options in an extended auto checkout period.

·8 months agoWhile you are correct in your assessment about America, that is a discussion for different board. I don't think ebay's payment system has anything to do with that.
Ebay is not forcing you to buy anything. If you don't want to pay for an auction automatically, don't bid on it! Find a fixed price listing instead.
jlckp
·8 months agoBut, if you see something you want to buy and don't want to use automatic payment, isn't ebay in a roundabout way forcing you not to buy it and also costing the seller a sale, especially if the seller doesn't know ebay installed autopay without their knowledge? In addition, is it necessary to respond to this person in such a condescending tone with an exclamation point? As for finding a fixed price listing, suppose the item you are bidding on is a collectible without any other fixed price listing?

·8 months agoI'm getting pretty sick of people assuming the only reason to use Paypal Credit is that you can't afford an item otherwise. I can afford anything I want to buy. I paid cash for my house eight years ago. I like to use Paypal Credit's no-interest plans on the advice of my financial planner, who says 'let your money work for you as long as you can'. So please rethink this whole condescending 'living beyond your means' garbage.

What a bizarre response to someone trying to help you. Meh.

That response was to a post that's been removed (although it's still quoted in my response to it). Trust me, the removed post was definitely not from someone trying to help.

OP8 months agoThanks for your comment. I was wrong to feed the trolls. I was responding to someone trolling across the boards while trying to address some of the put downs and their own need to be hurtful to me and @kathiec They told me that if I needed Pay Pal Credit that maybe I shouldn't be here buying things and then started attacking another member who was only trying to reason with them. Albeit, her answer was more calm and reasonable. I miss the old eBay from the beginning that was much more represented and diverse in its breadth. I learned a lot. Now it seems the atmosphere is markedly more judgmental and so much discussion about discovering how to navigate the labyrinth. Perhaps I was too defensive, but I am tired of coming here with a legitimate concern and getting attacked and judged by people.
