Automatic Payments on Buy it Now/Offers
I have decided after more than 15 years that I will no longer purchase from ebay. My preferred method of payment on eBay is paypal. My preferred method of payment on PayPal is my PayPal credit. Three times out of the last five purchases, PayPal has ignored my online purchase method of payment and taking money directly out of my checking account. This is due to eBay's new rule for automatic payments when you purchase something in buy it now or you make an offer. Instead of choosing which payment method you would like to use, it just automatically takes it out. This would be no problem if PayPal removed the payment from the correct preferred online purchase. EBay blames it on PayPal and PayPal blames it on ebay. EBay says that they made this rule so that sellers get their money instead of having to wait for it. I have absolutely no issue making an immediate payment however, I would like to choose where that money is coming from and PayPal is not allowing me to do so. They are just taking the money from whatever account they feel like taking it out of. My bank has removed and blocked PayPal from taking money out of any of my bank accounts however, in order to pay my PayPal credit card or my PayPal mastercard, they need to link my bank to it. So this is just a huge mess. The easiest way to fix this is just to not purchase from eBay at all anymore. It's no great loss considering that sellers are charging astronomical amounts for shipping unnecessarily.

·2 years agoThis just happened to me today on two purchases. They were inexpensive, fortunately, because when I selected Paypal for payment the money came out of my checking account automatically! What if it was an expensive item and the funds weren't in my account? Would my bank account be overdrawn and the bank then charge me an over draft fee? I've been with eBay for 22 years but I won't buy anything other than inexpensive items that I have bank funds for from here on out unless this is fixed. This business about doing it so that sellers get their money right away is bogus! I've been buying for 22 years and sellers always got their money, and I as a seller always got mine although it takes about 3 days for it to be in my bank account now whereas it used to be available in my Paypal account immediately.

·2 years agoWhat's so depressing about this is the fact that it gives the illusion of eBay favoring sellers over buyers, when that's not the case at all. -When was the last time eBay actually did something purely to make sellers happy, with no benefit to them (eBay)?
I wish this was more widely known, and now I can't even remember the details perfectly, but I read it on a post (I think by @valueaddedresource ) ..... what actually happened was the eBay shareholders demanded that eBay change how they report their sales figures. They WERE reporting sales including accepted offers and auction win amounts, whether the buyers paid or not. Now they must report ONLY PAID sales totals, so obviously they have a huge incentive to increase that. That is the real reason for this mess, which is actually harming sellers just as much as buyers, if not more because it's our income.
EDIT: @campanaelia Were you aware of ^ this? ^ -I ask because I've noticed these discussions have seemed to put you in a sellers vs. buyers mindset here and there. I just wish you could see how we're really all in the same boat, and that boat is a corporation, a mindless, heartless, money-computer/monster, whose sole purpose is to grow profits for shareholders.

·2 years agoThank you for that reply. In fairness, I can understand eBay trying to make sure buyers are legitimately going to make the purchase they've committed to, as I've had a few non-payers over the years myself. I guess the main thing that got me (and I realize it's not all eBay's fault - Paypal automatically made the payment method decision) is that the purchase price for the items I bought were taken out of my checking account without my authorizing it, like control of how I'm going to pay for something was taken away from me. As I mentioned in my post, what if it had been a more expensive item I wanted to put on Paypal Credit or use cash funds in my Paypal account, and to my shock they automatically pulled it from money in my checking that I had already written checks for to pay bills? I could have had checks bouncing and overdraft fees! When these auto payments are done you have no idea where the money was taken from unless you logon to Paypal and check the activity page. If you view your purchase on eBay it just says Paypal for payment method, not the source Paypal used in your wallet. In the future, if there's something I want that's only on eBay, I'll just have to make sure I have the funds set aside in my checking account just to be safe.

Of course I realize it's all about the shareholders, AMOF I made this comment in the link below stating exactly that point...
https://community.ebay.com/t5/Buying/Default-Payment-Method-quot-can-quot-or-quot-must-quot-set-Why/m-p/34495219#M489118
@valueaddedresource and @ittybitnot have also discussed that point in many threads here.
The reason it ends up pinning buyers against sellers is because many sellers post things like you must be a deadbeat or you must be not planning to pay if a buyer doesn't agree with using auto-pay, and it has nothing to do with that.
Sellers already have the 2 strike rule in their buyer requirements to block non-payers and they have the option to use BIN format w/IPR. Sellers also have the BBL which blocks a buyer permanently. Sellers already had the tools and options available but they continue to whine giving ebay fodder to blame auto-pay on them, so here we are.
On the other hand buyers have to deal with just as many non-performing sellers. Yes they get a defect if they actually choose the OOS/Damaged reason, but how many sellers lie about the reason, such as Buyer asked to cancel, or problem with address? Then the buyer has to waste more time to report the seller and I"d bet the majority of times it's never reported.
When a buyer doesn't pay the strike is given automatically when the item gets cancelled after 96 hours. My point is buyers get the UPI strike more easily than a seller gets a defect because sellers can lie about the reason, the honor system here doesn't seem to be working fairly.
Buyers also have no seller blocklist to block a seller permanently. Ebay makes many changes over the years a seller block list for buyers seems like a pretty simple thing to create, but no.
gurlcat
·2 years agoIf the sellers saying "You must be a deadbeat" were the SAME ones cancelling orders, you would have a better point, but you don't know that. You're cherrypicking and packing together 'bad's just to claim that sellers "continue to whine." Also when we whine about non-payers, if you're not a non-payer, then why ARE you calling it whining? It's not about you. It seems like you just want to sow arbitrary division. I wish you would stop doing that.
campanaelia
·2 years agoI've paid for every item in 20 years and I bet if I averaged it out I would have at least 2 or 3 **bleep** cancellations from sellers a month. If I was a whiner I would be creating a thread each time, heck I haven't even left negative feedback in years for any seller. But yes in conversations on the boards I will discuss my experiences on ebay the same way you do. And don't try to tell me what and what not to do, thank you.

·2 years agoLast I checked this is the buyers forum, the problem is sellers spend more time here than buyers do, so when an actual buyer only, like myself, comments here you all get defensive and pick apart their comments and take them out of context, trust me I'm use to it.
Like the other day when that lady was saying she had so many non-payers and it turned out she only had one in the past 12 months. And if you looked at her feedback left for others, she had about 20% negs for sellers too. That sounds like a whiner to me whether I'm a non-payer or not. Then when I confronted her you tell me I jumped on her and then question me if I'm ok. Why would you even defend that record, because she's a seller?
And to boot, she also created a thread in the sellers forum about her one unpaid item and posted about it 5 times in different threads, talk about a drama queen. But go ahead and jump on me instead because you can't handle the truth.

To that smug "i CaNt mAkE yOu uNdeRstAnD" clown replying to you, literally nobody is overpaying (often drastically) on a BIN just to use their preferred method of payment. That's insanity and you sure wouldn't be fine with doing it either so I fail to see why you replied with that as some sort of gotcha. I have had my account for 13 years, with 100% feedback as both a buyer and seller. I should be given the benefit of the doubt to pay promptly how I want, as I always have. Just to reiterate my position, I don't disagree one iota that auto-pay was a terrible idea, and is being executed even more terribly than in theory. But crying wolf about taking all of one's money completely from the platform cannot help to reverse the decision one iota either.

·2 years agoExactly! Why would Ebay complicate purchases for buyers? I will no longer do "make offers". I need the choice of transaction payment EVERY time! And I shouldn't have to contact the seller in advance of making an offer to ask them to disable the automatic payment feature. As a seller, I have opted out of the automatice payment but I'm pretty sure many small sellers don't even know they were opted in to this automatically. Here's the thing: Sellers already have the option of requiring immediate payment.

·2 years agoHi @rochesterny2014
If you decide to continue buying from eBay ... you can put the item on your Watchlist and see if the seller sends an offer. That way you can pay as you normally would.
eBay started requesting buyer's payment information because of nonpayers ... and NOT so sellers 'could get paid quicker'. [I hate when companies give B*S reasons for changing something!]
BTW, I would try talking to another PayPal CS rep to see if anything can be done to set your PayPal Credit as your default payment method ... but I understand that PP doesn't put the Credit option on every purchase. [It appears to depend on the type of item.] Good luck!

mtgraves7984
·2 years agoCan you not go into your PayPal Wallet, select 'PayPal Credit' and save it as your 'Preferred method when paying online'? For what it's worth... I just tested it and it allows me to.
rochesterny2014
OP2 years agoYes that's what I did, however with PayPal Credit being my preferred method of payment, when it's an automatic payment coming from ebay, PayPal has the right to reserve how they want to make the payment. For instance, I purchased three different items from the same seller. I made offers on each item. Two of those payments came out of my PayPal credit and the third payment was taken out of my checking account. When I called PayPal to find out why, they said that they reserve the right to pick and choose what payment method they would like to use for automatic payments. They said if they also said if there was no automatic payments, this would not be an issue. This has happened to me three times out of the last five purchases on ebay. So PayPal credit is my preferred method of payment and has been for months. But, instead of PayPal using PayPal credit as my online preferred method of payments, for eBay buy it now or offer purchases which use automatic payments, they get to pick and choose how they want it paid. So eBay created the issue and PayPal is just adding to the problem. So my solution to the problem is to just not purchase eBay products anymore.
mtgraves7984
·2 years agoWell, I see your issue, then. I wasn't aware that PayPal could juke you on the back end. Dang...
rochesterny2014
OP2 years agoExactly. And eBay knowing that this is an issue with PayPal isn't doing anything to fix the problem since they created it to begin with. I understand people selling on eBay and wanting to get their money, hell, I sold on eBay for a long time but people are going to do what they're going to do. But yeah, this is what PayPal is doing and eBay is not putting any stipulations on PayPal as far as this goes either. PayPal's going to get their money no matter what. And so is eBay so neither one of them care. So I'm just not going to engage with eBay.

·2 years agoI purchased three different items from the same seller. I made offers on each item.
@rochesterny2014
PayPal credit, or PayPal Pay in 4 is not an option with you are participating in the new auto-pay for offers. Interesting that they let you use it for two items and not the third even though your selected your preferred option in PayPal before using it as your DEFAULT payment method. How did you like paying full shipping price for those instead of being able to combine shipping?
Good thing you did not want to use Google Pay, Apple Pay, Spendable Funds, etc. because they are not allowed either.
rochesterny2014
OP2 years agoYeah no combined shipping. The seller said they only had three in stock so I bought all three and paid. Then the next day they listed three more so I bought those, then the next day they listed three more and I bought those. It's amazing to me that PayPal can pick and choose how they want you to pay for your online purchases regardless of whether it's an automatic payment or not. It's still an online purchase. So I have just decided to remove eBay from purchasing options and continue to use other platforms. I never do the pay in 4. I just naturally assumed that if it's an online purchase, it would automatically get charged to your preferred method of payment for online purchases. And after several calls back and forth between eBay and paypal, each one blamed the other. So I'm just done. I've seen so many complaints about this on Reddit and in this form as well.

·2 years agoThe same issue here. I was unaware that PayPal kept charging my bank account, that I provided just because the PayPal requires one, with "automatic payments" instead of charging my default method, credit card.
They depleted my bank account to the point that I did not have sufficient funds on my bank account for a next purchase and the bank charged me NSF $40.00 fee. The PayPal emailed me that they will attempt to pull money again in three business days.
I found that "automatic payment" on PayPal and changed it to credit card. I also put some money into PayPall balance as well just in case and despite of that, the PayPal charged my bank account again. Luckily, I managed to deposit some money on that bank account via of series transfers from my debit card from another bank account to PayPal balance to the bank account that was charged. If I did not manage to do that on time, PayPal would charge my insufficient bank account again resalting another NSF $40.00 fee.
While I am paying my purchases promptly, the PayPal should not have rights to disregard my default settings and charge my bank account whenever they want.
When you make offer and it is accepted, they charge you immediately anyway so why then not the credit card that is my primary payment method.
gurlcat
·2 years agoIt's interesting that you make this reply today, because just last night I made a purchase from Walmart and it was a leap of faith that it would draw from my preferred method (Paypal Credit, which does not have an affiliated card, so if I want to use credit online I would much rather use this^ because I can't use it at brick and mortar stores or, heaven forbid, a utility company or whatever -better to leave my Visa credit card with enough balance for an emergency like that). Sorry, that was complicated, but the gist is I couldn't know if this Walmart purchase would charge to my preferred method until after it was already done. -It had only a Paypal icon to click, then "Complete purchase" .... NOT that transfer to Paypal screen where you can choose which Wallet account to use.
Luckily, it DID draw from my PP Credit as I hoped it would.
But eBay, now you've got me wondering. I know that when I pay for Buy It Now items that I've put in my shopping cart, as well as auction wins and accepted offers (by sellers who have auto-pay turned 'off') ..... then all my options are visible on the shopping cart checkout screen. I've made only one or two 'offer' purchases where the seller had auto-pay 'on', but it has been at least a month or more, and I don't remember if it drew from my preferred method or not.
But yes this would be a very important thing to consider, because buyers are angry enough about the requirement, but having it draw from an unintended account can be disastrous. And if it works for a Walmart purchase, then why not an eBay auto-pay offer accepted one?
In the past I have had pretty good experiences with Paypal customer service. Since you have a recent case of their preferred method option failing, would you please call them and see what their explanation is, and share the answer here?
whiteparrot2003
·2 years agoApparently on automatic payments, PP defaults to checking or credit card as I have set PPcredit as a preferred payment and it was not used on "make offer" transactions.
safan80
·2 years agorochesterny2014
OP2 years agoI already did all that. Actually eBay blames PayPal and PayPal blames ebay. No one wants to take responsibility for the reason that they are claiming that they have to take the money out of our accounts immediately. That's not the problem with me. The problem is that they're taking it out of the wrong account. My preferred method of payment is and always has been my PayPal credit. But they're not taking it out of that account. They're taking it out of my checking account. Now I spoke to a seller to which I have bought from many times previously and she was aware of the fact that the money gets taken from us immediately, however, the seller is still not being paid for 7 days. The whole purpose of taking the money immediately is so that the seller gets the money immediately which is not happening.
ajs_coins_and_alchemy
·2 years agoNot true. I would argue it doesn't even have to do with the timeline of when they take the money. The whole point is to secure the payment/method. Too many buyers skip out on payment. You are pre-authorizing the payment. Of course, there is no reason to delay, but EBay could have set this program up to charge your payment method 24 or 48 or 96 hours later, it would be silly but it would still guarantee payment which is the main/sole purpose.
Furthermore, when the seller receives the funds related to your payment is completely irrelevant. Once your payment is received by eBay it takes 24+ hours to process the payment through the payment processor. THEN the funds can become available to the seller assuming there are no holds. The seller may have a 7 day hold on their proceeds, or they may have 7 day (weekly) payouts. So the timeline when the seller receives the funds in their bank account is not part of the equation for why you are paying "immediately".
Example ... You buy something from me, the payment you made will finish processing the following day. (Someone who bought from me yesterday, their payment doesn't complete processing until Midnight tonight.) Then my funds are immediately available (no holds). I could request immediate payout or wait until next week Tuesday for my regularly scheduled payout. Then it takes another 24 hours or so for the funds to show up in my checking account.
rochesterny2014
OP2 years agoYou can disagree all you want. I really don't care. The seller told me that they don't receive the money for 7 days after purchase. Which is the whole reason that eBay or PayPal decided to do this immediate payment thing. I don't have a problem with paying immediately. My problem is that they're not using my preferred method of payment and they are using my checking account. End of story. I have nothing more to say on this matter.
ajs_coins_and_alchemy
·2 years agoGlad you don't mind my "disagreement". I'm just letting you know that you are wrong. I see in your original post you said "eBay says it's so sellers don't have to wait"... who told you that? A customer service rep? Sorry, they lie when they don't know the answers to your questions and...guess what ... they never know the answers to your questions (they always lie)...
It is not an "immediate payment thing" and has nothing to do with the timeline of the payment. It a "pre-authorized payment thing" because buyers weren't paying. While the payment is processed immediately, you're missing the purpose of the program. The issue isn't when they paid, that's not what the program solves, the issue is they DIDN'T pay. That is the problem it is designed to solve.
I'm not arguing it's a good program. I hate the program. I hate it more than you do quite frankly. I'm just informing you of the facts.
Is your preferred payment method one of the available payment options? You pre-select the payment method ... so IF your preferred payment method is one of the accepted payment methods for pre-authorized payment... then pick that method when they prompt you. If it's not an available option, and you don't like any of the options they provide you, then you really have no room to complain. You authorized the method, they didn't do this on their own. You had to agree to it and authorize it.
The problem is TONS of buyers are just not reading the little pop up window and they are shocked by the results and outcomes and blame eBay after the fact.
rochesterny2014
OP2 years agoOkay. Just stop.

kathiec
·2 years agoWhat you have conveniently omitted is that this dunderheaded move now also applies to auction listings. So it seems wholly irrelevant that you can't do it on other platforms.
gurlcat

And her reply to him was "Because a lot of times a seller will accept a lower offer."
She basically didn't answer his question at all, because she can't go making offers wherever else she decides to go. Meanwhile eBay remains the hands down absolute BEST place to find a wide varity of items, especially pre-owned, for much lower prices.

·2 years agoAs both a buyer and a seller, I am 100% happy with automatic payments.
As a seller:
I have IPR so payment has to be made prior to the item being considered sold but I also have b.o. options on all my listings. Having buyers' payment set up ahead of time, I know that if I accept an offer or if I counter and the buyer accepts my counteroffer, I WILL get paid for that item without having to wait.
As a buyer:
My payment is in the system and I don't have to worry about going back in after a seller accepts my offer to "pay now." The seller knows that I'm serious in my offer and once they accept, I own it, they're paid and my item will be coming to me.
I don't get all the complaints about automatic payments! Why BIN or make an offer if you need time to decide if you really want it, want to decide how you're going to pay or if you need time to save the money in order to pay?

·2 years agoIf eBay fails to automatically collect payment from the buyer's pre-selected card, they will treacherously do so from any other source they choose that is not authorized by the buyer for for this transaction. Here I must say that I live in a country where it is impossible to simply withdraw money to store in an account in any foreign bank (including my own PayPal wallet) without paying additional money for it. Usually this is done by third-party services for an additional fee. And for me, storing money on a foreign resource, such as my PayPal account, is great luck. And now, imagine, as soon as I won the lot, eBay steals money from me from my PayPal account, although I indicated my credit card at the bank as the source. I don’t know why this happened, maybe there was some kind of temporary glitch in the server of this bank, or magnetic storms, etc. (because I had all the money what they needed in my bank account), but eBay stole $500 from my private PayPal account, which was not intended for that purpose. I don't know how I should react to this, but I most likely will not use eBay services again, at least if this mode of automatic theft of money from sources not intended for this is still active. I just want to clarify that I almost always pay for my eBay purchases manually within 15 minutes, and with accounts in 3 different banks in my country, I plan very carefully from which bank I need to pay from for each purchase (without using the money that was laboriously transferred from my country to my PayPal wallet).

·2 years agoThe point is the auto payments allowed me to stay use pay in 3 or PayPal credit as before you confirmed make offer it directed you to PayPal to choose how to pay now all of a sudden no option did not divert to paypal checkout but sent the offer then I got charged in full no option to pay in 3 no diversion made to paypal first so if you cannot see that's what complaints are about buyer no longer gets choice of how to buy when offer is taken in full payment

·2 years agoPayPal and eBay are separate companies.
eBay cannot tell PayPal how to allocate funds.
eBay doesnt even see your payment information - it is done by the payment processing company.
Sounds to me like PayPal has the issue.
I wont address the shipping issue because people who dont sell or ship have no idea what the costs are and that inflation didnt shop at the gas or grocery stores.

OP2 years agoI do know exactly what it cost to ship items on Ebay as I have sold on eBay and other platforms as well. So I don't need to be schooled on inflation. If people choose to go galavanting around at thrift stores or wherever it is that they buy these goods to sell, that should go into the selling price, not the shipping price. So your argument is invalid. As far as eBay and they're automatic payments go, eBay was fine without automatic payments, now they do automatic payments and PayPal is adding to the problem.
