Authenticity guarantee on gold jewelry.
It appears this is just dessert topping to prevent buyers from testing their own gold. I bought a 10k chain that was marked as 14k. And the testing kit was fresh, and professionally done. Obviously there is some racket going on, gold fraud being one of the biggest in the world.
This experience brings into question all 'authenticity guaranteed' items. The guarantor sends nothing with the item, no contact info, name, address or certificate.
So, it's safe to just ignore authenticity guaranteed, and have it done youself. I test all gold I purchase, and all gold I sell. And the buyer is welcome to confirm my tests with a test kit. If any merchant gives you trouble, tell him you'll send someone over to recover your investment.
EBay has a choice, leave this post pinned to the top, or I'll publlish something similar to my 2.7 million online readers, one day each month until the situation is rectified.

·1 year agoWhile this is an old thread, it is worth a bump. GIA testers in a lot of cases are unable to determine if an item is gold filled -- even obvious examples to any experienced buyer. They only rely on the limited abilities of XRF to determine metal purity, which is very easy to exploit with gold filled items.

OP2 years agoI just photographed the test stone showing the gold purity, and attached it to an INAD case, explaining that the authenticity guarantor is wrong, because I did my own test, and the piece is not authentic. I didn't use the item. I only tested it, and packed it back up for shipping. I got a label from the seller, sent the otem back, and received a full refund.
I've been on eBaY for 23 years, and have never been anything but perfectly honest. I have a reputation for compliance to eBay policy, and I have minimal returns. If I decide I don't really want an item, I won't return it. I'll list it on eBay, and get my money back from the sale. I only return defective items. So, maybe eBay trusted me due to my history, and it could see I had just purchased a gold test kit.

I do not buy/sell jewelry on ebay. However, I would think that if you take your piece to a Certified Gemologist Appraiser (CGA) or an Independent Certified Gemologist Appraiser (ICGA) and get a note from them that includes their CGA ICGA number or certification, stating that the gold content is not what was advertised, you may be able to win an ebay Item Not As Described (INAD) dispute. If you have not read ebay's info about authentication you should open the links below. Especially the 2nd one which is their disclaimer for tolerances of test results.

Because ebay tends to not believe their GIA authenticators can make mistakes, Filing an INAD may not work using the links provided in your purchase history. You may be able to get resolution by filing a case on their Facebook or Twitter social media sites. (links below) The reps there are ebay employees and you can easily attach proof of an authenticator's certification and the note, as well as photos to back your claim. They do have the power to authorize returns and refunds. You will need to give them the seller's username, and the ebay item number, and sign your message with your real and ebay username.
