Auction Win at Low Price Cancelled
Summary: gemhunter shared their experience of winning an auction at a low price, only for the seller to cancel the transaction, citing non-payment as the reason before relisting the item. They were advised by the seller to bid again or contact eBay, leading gemhunter to seek feedback and suggestions from others. envius0414 responded with a similar experience of winning an item twice, receiving refunds, and eventually being ignored by the seller after the second win, leaving them in a state of uncertainty. The discussion revolves around shared frustrations and seeking solutions for dealing with such auction cancellations.
The seller appears to have cancelled my low priced auction win before automatic payment had a chance to process claiming the transaction was automatically cancelled due to non-payment. The seller relisted the item and told me I could bid on it, or take up my concerns with eBay, but insisted that the first auction win was irrelevant and to pursue a different outcome was in so many words a waste of everyone’s time. Has this happened to others? What recourse do I have? Any feedback or suggestions are welcome.

·1 week agoI'm sorry this happened to you. This happened to me about 3 weeks ago but I'm stubborn and actually won the same item twice after the seller cancelled the first winning auction. I was also able to pay for it right away but received a refund for the first auction and within the hour the item was listed again. The reason for the refund was as he told me was "not for that price".
The second time I won the auction the seller just went silent. No response to messages and it's been 2 weeks since the auction was won. There is no update on the item at all. I have made reports and left feedback but as a buyer I'm stuck in limbo awaiting an outcome.

·8 months agoDid you read the section on
Report an issue with a seller
https://www.ebay.com/help/buying/resolving-issues-sellers/report-issue-seller?id=4022&st=3&pos=1&query=Report%20an%20issue%20with%20a%20seller&intent=report%20seller&lucenceai=lucenceai&docId=HELP1299
Did you receive a notification when you placed your bid? It should have the information needed to report the seller.
What was the item number of the cancelled item?

·8 months agoI've heard "out of stock or damaged" is often used when a buyer's feedback history indicates problematic behavior (lots of negative feedback left, impossible to please). That does not seem to be the case with your situation so it probably was simple dissatisfaction with the sales price. I agree that sucks...should have used higher start price or buy it now.

"The seller appears to have cancelled my low priced auction win before automatic payment had a chance to process claiming the transaction was automatically cancelled due to non-payment".
Did you check the seller's feedback profile before bidding on the item? From what you wrote about the seller claiming the payment hadn't processed makes me think the seller is a new one who did not know about the 30 day hold ebay places on new sellers or returning ones who have not sold anything in over a year first few payments. An experienced seller also would not write"
" that the first auction win was irrelevant and to pursue a different outcome was in so many words a waste of everyone’s time".
Many new/returning sellers do not know about the hold, or how to deal with it to get the funds released. That seller could have a fair number of feedback and a 100% rating, but all for buying at least in the last year. New sellers also tend to take ebay's bad advice to start auctions with a low starting bid, to encourage bidding, which often does not work out well for them. Just another reason to always check a seller's feedback profile before buying or bidding on their items, no matter what their feedback percentage is.

OP8 months agoYes, I checked the seller’s feedback and it appeared that they had 100% favorable and over 3000 transactions under their belt, so I inferred from that that they were not new at this and must have a customer satisfaction approach.

·8 months agoDo sellers ever wonder why are sales low or where have the buyers gone ?
Inappropriate seller behavior helps discourage potential buyers from visiting eBay. Not good for other sellers & eBay
A seller can either be an asset or a liability to ebay

·8 months agoPotential buyers should understand that majority of the sellers on eBay are amateurs and expectations should be realistic…smart buyers will judge sellers individually based on their actions..I have good and bad sellers all the time, but this is reality of life…the only thing that keeps eBay afloat is fairly simple and effective for buyers, money back guarantee…without it, only gamblers would would buy on this platform…
gemhunter
OP8 months agoI understand what you have conveyed, but my issue is the flawed eBay procedures that allow a seller to cancel a transaction under false pretenses, when my written communications from eBay assured me before the cancellation that I was all set and the trade would be paid for on a certain date and no one is held accountable when the transaction is cancelled, then the seller makes a false statement to me saying it was automatically cancelled due to nonpayment. The seller relists the item and basically tells me to pound sand regarding the first auction saying it is irrelevant, and to bid on the new auction, if I wanted the coin.

·8 months agoI'm sorry this happened to you. The seller didn't get the amount of money they wanted. This happens a lot on eBay. It is only one example of the erosion of the rights of buyers. I bought these and could not check out even though eBay kept telling me to pay for my purchase. The seller used the convenient "auction canceled due to damage" excuse. The seller didn't even bother to contact me. At the same time have you noticed that eBay has made it harder to cancel a bid? All the rhetoric about the importance of a binding contract is meaningless unless justice is equal between buyers and sellers. You can leave appropriate feedback?

"At the same time have you noticed that eBay has made it harder to cancel a bid?"
Retracting a bid should be hard to do, since it can lead to others who have or wanted to participate in it to not bid, thinking that a shill is being used, or to retract their bid(s) hurting the final price. If you go to a live auction and try to retract a bid, you will be kicked out and possibly banned from participating in the house's auctions.

·8 months agoThe OP's concern is genuine and many are experiencing the same problems and should be taken seriously by eBay management. Yes, you have made your views on bid retractions known across this board. A buyer gets their bid retractions listed by their name, but why doesn't the seller get a simular number of canceled auctions by their name? Because there is a double standard here and the buyers are on the losing end.

·8 months agoThe seller is almost " asking " for it.............................
gemhunter
OP8 months agoAsking for what? That’s my question. Beyond leaving unfavorable feedback. I want eBay to investigate. This transaction was scheduled for automatic payment, yet the seller cancelled saying out of stock, then relisted the exact same coin. When I inquired with the seller I was told the transaction was automatically cancelled due to nonpayment which appears to be untrue.

·8 months agoThere is nothing you can do. If the first auction was cancelled you must make a decision. Do you bid on the second auction this seller has or purchase the item from someone else.
gemhunter
OP8 months agoYou may be correct, but I have a hard time accepting that at this point. This the first time I have posted to this forum, and did not provide all of the salient details in my first post because my first effort at doing that gave me a posting error, so I edited and shortened the initial posting. I need to provide all the details to eBay, but since the seller closed the transaction claiming “out of stock or damaged,†there do not appear to be the normal channels for opening a case to have eBay investigate.

Yes, this loophole has been used at least 7 times in auctions where I was the buyer. Only one time did a seller write to tell me of a mishap. I don't think it is possible anymore to warn others in your feedback about what happened to you. eBay is taking away buyer's rights as they empower scammers and those of low morality. Thanks for bringing this to the community and consider reaching out to your local television consumer advocate to bring even greater awareness.
