asking security questions to verify my ID
I was just on my account last night with no problems ... this morning I went to EB and was taken to the log-in screen (which is weird, because I always stay logged in) BUT I entered my user name and password ... then the REALLY weird stuff started to happen ... I was told to check my email for a passcode to enter ... no email from EB ever appeared ... when I went back to EB, I was told to call 866-303-3229 and mention a security code, when I did that the lady on the other end proceeded in asking me my name, phone number and my zip code (WHICH should of been enough to verify my ID) She then started asking me VERY PERSONAL questions that I had no clue as to what the answers were ... in what city does Shirley ???? live ... don't even know that person, what car did I own back in 1991 ... (I drove a 1991 Mazda 626), but that choice wasn't even offered ... a BMW, a Ford SUV, a Buick Skylark or some other choice (I don't remember what she said) ... I ask her where she was getting this information from and was told 'from public records" ... I then explained to her that "public records" are not accurate ... they had me living at my house in Michigan, in a FEED STORE in the next town over (A FEED STORE ???), in a small farm town about 125 miles south west of my REAL house, at my BROTHER'S house in Ohio, some place in Tennessee ... ALL AT THE SAME TIME ... she promptly continued her questioning from the "PUBLIC RECORDS" .... I had to raise my voice to make my point because she ignored me when I told her I would no longer answer any questions ... ASK me questions about my account ... my name, my birthdate, my SSAN, my phone number, what recent purchases I have sold or bought, what's on my saved seller list ... questions about my account .... DO NOT ASK ME questions from a VERY INCORRECT and VERY OUTDATED "public record' search ... what happened to the simple security questions I answered when I signed up with the site (what street did you live on as a child, who's your favorite actor/ musican, what was your pets name when you were a child) ... this was about an hour of my time that was wasted trying to gain access back to my account .... stupid and useless

OP3 years agoI would like to respond to some of the things you people have told me I was doing wrong ...
>> First, let me say that, while I'm not a super genius computer geek, I have been involved with computers since the early 1980's (that's 40 years) ... I can spot a fake email from a real one, I know a FAKE website when I see one, I'm not that naive (HINT/TIP: at the top of the page your are looking at right now, take a look at the address bar ... it says community.ebay.com ... it does not say 'joes scam site.com' ... I can tell the difference, and now (thanks to me) so can you)
>> Scammers put up fake web pages with eBay logos and non-eBay phone numbers, and scammers do take out ads on Google that point to those fake pages so that when users search for eBay customer service phone number the top search results are quite often ads rather than legitimate results ... TRUE, TRUE, TRUE ... but doing a search JUST for the phone number with NO MENTION of Ebay, customer service or any other information ... just 10 simple numbers is all you need (866-303-3229) reveals a lot of information from a lot of very reliable sites (go ahead, try it yourself ... I know you want to ... I'll wait)
it seems to me that a FAKE number being used for more than 10 years now, would of been spotted by Google security, or EBAY security, or some other Law Enforcement Agency that scours the internet looking for security breaches just like this
>> While Ebay does not have a "publicized" phone number, they do have a number you can call ... it's a direct link to their Customer Service department ... the number that I obtained came directly from the EBAY website ... NOT thru some fake looking email, not thru a fake looking website, but from EBAY.COM itself (unless a scammer had hacked EBAY at that precise moment, then I was talking to EBAY itself)
>> Ebay doesn't have a number you can call now. You have to have them call you
and how do I contact EBAY to have them call me ... thru their website that I'm locked out of ???
maybe thru some sort of email that MAY or MAY not be monitored ...
(and where do you get this email ... look at the website that I'm locked out of ???)
>> I routinely do security checks and scans on my computer, so any virus, malware, trojans would NOT have been present or would have been caught and isolated before being allowed to do anything ... and if I did have one, why target JUST Ebay ... why not my online banking, Pay Pal, Amazon, Etsy or any of the other numerous online shopping sites that I frequent
(by the way, I do not go about and search for malicious sites to visit ... )
>> Go to MY EBAY. Look at MESSAGES. If you do not see an email there from Ebay, you got scammed ... OK, but tell me .... PLEASE TELL ME !!!! How do you look at your messages when you can't even log into Ebay itself ???
>> Most legit businesses will TELL YOU how they gather info, WHAT info they collect, and WHAT METHODS they use to collect it ...
THAT'S THE POINT I'M TRYING TO MAKE RIGHT NOW .... look at the Privacy Policy, section 4 paragraph 4 ... Ebay collects personal data from other sources and from third parties including "Public Sources"
Where you lived at, what car you drove/drive, who your relatives are .... sorry to burst your bubble people, but it's all Public Information ... AND YES, they do use THAT information to "verify" who you are

·6 months agojt say 'joes scam site.com' ... I can tell the difference, and now (thanks to me) so can you)
Thanks! For a minute there, I almost got scammed by Joe, but now I know better.

OP3 years agoat the bottom of this very page ... find the PRIVACY link (very small print on the VERY bottom of the page) ... scroll down to paragraph 4)
They come right out and and say as much in their privacy policy:
4.4 Personal data from other sources
We also collect personal data about you from other sources and from third parties to the extent permitted by applicable law. In particular, this includes the following data:
in regards to my ORIGINAL post, I was complaining about how OUTDATED and INACCURATE the information can be from "PUBLIC SOURCES" and should not be relied upon to be a definite source of securing a positive verification to someone's ID .... never did I mention that I thought i was being hacked, all requests CAME DIRECTLY from the EBAY website itself

·6 months agoI just had this happen to me and I hing up. I have had my idnity because the gained the anwsers to questions that the IRS asks!! Ebay is not a bank!! The woman than proceeded that the security questions varied state by state. They called me, I did not call them. This is literally how you get your idenity stolen. It is like they where doing a credit check, they are not a financial instiuton and I am sure is h not giving out these very specific security answers out. She asked " what was the last car you leased?" Uhhhh I own my car outright and have never leased a car in my whole life. Nah, I am good. When I had a ebay account in the past , all they did was when you sold something was link your ban account, and deduct there fees. Why doesnt it matter if I am selling name crand shoes, like Nike or Clarks? No wonder there isnt cool stuff on ebay anymore, people dont want the identity stolen. Literally almost everything is from a foreign country, they dont have social security numbers

·6 months agoThis thread will probably be locked soon due to its age. BUT, we’ve recently been seeing an uptick in what we refer to as a “verification scam”. The information has been forwarded to eBay staff who have alerted the Trust and Safety team.

OP3 years agowhy oh why oh why .... thanks for all the concerns ... I do have several messages from EBay (thru their own internal message service) asking me to rate and comment on my recent interaction with their CS ...
let me ask a question to the community ...
how/why would a hacker get into my account and then lock me out, then thru the EBAY website direct me to call a number (that clearly states on any Google search that it belongs to EBAY) ... ask me a couple of questions and then give me access back to EBAY, then ask me thru the EBAY private message service how was my interaction with their Customer Service ...
seems like a long way to go for a hacker just to get some info on me (considering they already have access to my "public records") ... I'm not rich by any means and their efforts seem mighty powerful just for a few peanuts
to those STILL thinking I got hacked ... just do a simple search on this very forum and you'll run into hundreds of very similar comments, all addressing the same concerns I just mentioned, some dating back to 2018 and beyond ... SO YES, EBAY does use "public records" as a source to verify your ID

·3 years agoBut this is what is relevant: eBay does not then use the information obtained in those records in the way in which it was used by the scammer you telephoned. Sorry, but your computer was compromised with some sort of malware and it was used to fool you into giving away the farm, info-wise.

OP3 years agoso unwise of me to answer what street I once lived on ... hackers and scammers MUST be jumping in the street knowing that they can use information obtained from "public records" that is decades old ... I guess my Associate Degree in Applied Science for Computer Programming means nothing and my 40+ years of dealing with computer security was a waste of my life ... thank you so much for informing me of this

·6 months agoseems like a long way to go for a hacker
Hackers have nothing else to do, so time means nothing to them. They never go outside, don't have any non-hacker friends, and have an unnatural relationship with their mothers. They are probably doing AI things now to collect and scam. It seems their relationship with eBay et al is getting stronger everyday.
why not my online banking, Pay Pal, Amazon, Etsy or any of the other numerous online
'Soon come Man' (bartender in Jamica) ...
Be careful out there ...
