Let me add my voice to the many who have called out Allstate (and by association, Ebay), for offering blatantly deceptive coverage of used items. I purchased a long out of production item, obviously used, as a backup to one that was acting up, and didn't check it out until past the seller's return period. It was defective. Assuming my still active one-year "protection plan" would cover such a situation, I filed a claim. First Allstate says no because my ancient, out of production used item is still under manufacturer's warranty. Huh? Then after a long, long process on the phone with a very helpful agent, she finally said she was sad to have to tell me the policy only covers items that worked, then stopped working. **bleep**? How **bleep** insurance companies continue to get away with such stuff is maddening. Integrity is in short supply.

·Sep 15, 2026 at 7:50 PMI have been horrified. I prepared to claim with photos as requested. Then they said I needed to call. That call was done by AI and it went on for two hours after which they said they didn’t receive the information I had earlier sent. I will never ever do business with Allstate again. Worse, this was on a travel day for me that had extra segments. I will likely not sleep tonight before reporting for work in the morning. II think they should be reported to the insurance commissioner in the various states where have regional offices or headquarters.

You should never buy anything for possible future use on ebay without checking it out within the 30 days from the delivery date the Money Back Guarantee (MBG) gives you to return it if it does not work. Then you will get a full refund whereas Allstate would only cover the purchase price not the shipping cost or sales tax if they do not weasel out of paying off.
Open the link to the MBG policy and the time frames for using it below. There is a link to the policy on every listing page in the right column under the accepted payment icons look for the Shop with confidence header and click on the Learn more button.

OP4 months agoYou're right about that. Won't make that mistake again.

·4 months agoHeck, All state changed there story once, so you change yours once....and now this is where we are at in this chess game...they say if it "worked and failed", you say now "it did work and now failed" Point out they record the conversations, they can see how they changed it up. Not sure how you detail your complaint calls, but always mark down the time, date, and agent you spoke with...many times the party that wins is the one that keeps the best records.
Insurance companies are in the business of collecting money, paying out money...not so much. Keep in mind, too, that some of their fine print will not apply in all 50 states equally, but you need to know what parts are not allowable to enforce in your state, they wont tell you.

·4 months agoContact Allstate again, and tell them, "my bad...I used the item for a couple of weeks & it worked fantastically, and then it stopped working".
Go back and read the terms of the insurance, tosee if you did miss something that supports what the agents said. If you don't see anything, contact them again. Plus try your luck with your payment source for both a charge back on the item and the insurance

OP4 months agoThanks, might be worth a shot. It was six months ago, though, and I certainly don't want to punish or cast shade on the seller. Just Allstate. 😉

·4 months agoWhile you may feel deceived, the policy is likely intended to cover future failures, not shipping damages or seller misrepresentation of a used item's condition.
Seller's return period - what does that have to do with eBay's Money Back Guarantee - you have 30 days from the actual or estimated delivery date to open a not as described complaint.

OP4 months agoThe seller offered a 14-day return period, but I did fail to check out the item within that time, or within 30 days. That's on me. But what's the point of offering warranty-like protection for used items if not to cover a defective item? A manufacturer's warranty would provide repair, but that's often not an option with old electronics. Hence, the Allstate safety backup. Or so I thought. Clearly there must have been some fine print I didn't read, but the way they handled the claim made it more than obvious they're preying on unsuspecting buyers of used items and making it very difficult to collect on claims. The BBB and other consumer groups have countless complaints about this exact issue.
