19 Years with ebay
Almost 20 years I have been a buyer with eBay. The majority of those years have been a positive purchasing experience until my most recent. I ordered a product that was advertised incorrectly. I contacted the seller and explained the situation. I purchased the item as a gift to my granddaughter who happened to love it. She lives in another town, so I had it shipped directly to her. When she received it, she informed me that the "waterproof" mascara I had ordered WAS NOT "waterproof." Had I known before making that purchase, I could have gotten the regular mascara elsewhere for a much lower price. I in turned contacted the seller but she did nothing to satisfy me as the customer except offer an apology and told me she would change the listing to reflect its accuracy. She did however send a return label to send the product back. This would be a difficult task for me being my granddaughter lives in another town as to why I had the product shipped to her address. This means she would have to pack the item, return it to me and I would have to ship it back to eBay.
This was too much of a hassle over mascara. I then contacted eBay to step in. I was taken thru so many steps trying to speak with someone to assist me. eBay's policy states a money back guarantee if your purchased item is not as described. But it actually DID NOT work out that way for me. The agent kept asking me to return the item and I kept telling him it WAS NOT in my possession. Long story short, eBay DID NOT honor their written policy. I'm so glad it wasn't a large purchase, or I would have been out on my own with a lost. Throughout the years purchasing from them, I have NEVER experienced such disregard, especially over an item that cost less than $10.00. Businesses no longer stand by their policies. Most people are so desperate to get your hard-earned cash till they will do anything to keep it. This has taught me a valuable lesson of not relaying on businesses to honor you as a long-standing purchaser. I will NEVER again take the chance to make any purchases with eBay again, especially any large purchases. I've been informed from another buyer that they purchased a car and had a negative experience with eBay. Please BEWARE of your spending and even if you read the small print businesses still can't be reliable to stand on their promises. They will twist and turn every line to reflect the fact that they really can't or won't help. But let me also state, every seller DOES NOT fall under this complaint. As I stated at the beginning the majority of my shopping experiences were positive. But since the pandemic, mostly EVERYTHING has changed and definitely not for the good of consumers.

Waterproof is a HUGE pain to get off.
That seller was doing your GD a favor.
Let her know. Take it off before you go to sleep.

·3 years agoeBay absolutely DID stand by their policy. Their policy is that if the seller sends you a shipping label for a return, you need to return the item in order to get a refund.

·3 years agoPlease tell me one large online marketplace that will refund without requiring the item's return. I'll wait. No???
The seller voluntarily took care of the problem by apologizing and sending a return label. A great many sellers would have ignored you and forced you to go through an eBay case to get a return label. And guess what? Even if you'd done all that eBay wouldn't have refunded you until the tracking showed the item returned, no matter how much of a "hassle" it was.
Your feedback for this seller casts you in a far worse light than it does the seller. Please do the right thing and ask the seller to send you a feedback revision form so you can remove it.

·3 years agoIf you want your refund, get the grandddaughter to return it. The case does NOT stay open forever. You cannot keep the item and get a refund. Eventually, the case will "time out."

·3 years agoHi @mercindeed
I am a buyer only, and I truly do not understand your expectations to receive a refund without having to return the item.
You say that the seller 'did nothing to satisfy me as the customer except offer an apology and told me she would change the listing to reflect its accuracy. She did however send a return label to send the product back. '
That means that the seller did exactly what eBay's Money Back Guarantee said it would do. Amazon ... the company that everyone cites as the 'gold standard for buyer protection' ... requires us to return the item before getting a refund. Again, I don't know where your expectations came from, because it's never been eBay's policy to refund money without receiving the item back. [And leaving the seller negative feedback is unconscionable IMHO.]

·3 years agoSo what was your question? Only advice.
My answer for you is to be more concise.

·3 years agoWow, how can it be!
In all respect, this is still a positive experience. Seller apologizes for its error, admits that it will update its listing and sends you a return label in order for you to return merchandise and get your refund. As the buyer, seller is only able to send this information to you only, not your receiver/granddaughter. Seller is trying to make you whole, can't you see it?
Is not that difficult to print the label, scan and send to granddaughter via email or text. I know, you probably would have preferred to get refunded outright, I get it, but at the same time the seller is protecting itself and doing due diligence on a possible error and they want it corrected and not count against them.

·3 years agoThe easiest way of handling this problem is to mail the return label to your granddaughter and have her or her parents send the item back to the seller. You would then get your refund and they wouldn't have to pay any postage since the label is postage paid. It would only cost you a stamp.
albertabrightalberta
·3 years agoIt wouldn't even have cost the price of a stamp. @mercindeed could have just saved the PDF of the shipping label and sent the image to her granddaughter.
Sheesh, it's not necessary after 19 years with ebay to turn this molehill into a mountain.

·3 years agoYour seller went out of their way to mail the item to a different address. Most sellers would not do that. The seller could have cancel the order...and they should have. There's just too much drama mailing an item to a different address.
buyselljack2016
·3 years agoitems are shipped to the address provided at checkout. The seller did not "go out of their way" by shipping to the provided address, and would have no valid reason to cancel, and should not.

·3 years agoWhat makes you think the seller went out o their way to mail the item to a different address?
You can ship to any address you choose during checkout.
The seller would have no right to cancel the order. I see no drama here.

·3 years agoWhere's the quote stating they didn't choose the grand daughters address at checkout?

·3 years agoWhen a buyer pays for an item...that address with that payment is where it should be mailed.
Grandmother probably asked seller to change address.
I am quoting what is there.
buyselljack2016
·3 years agoSeems to be some confusion here. OP says that they had the item shipped to the granddaughter.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
She lives in another town, so I had it shipped directly to her.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Most take that to mean that it was done with that address provided at checkout. I do see your point if that was not the case.
campanaelia
·3 years agoI agree with this part of your statement, "When a buyer pays for an item...that address with that payment is where it should be mailed."
But you're assuming the address change was done afterwards. The OP never said that.
soh.maryl
·3 years agoHowever, we don't know the exact circumstances here, do we?

Granddaughter loves it, but op still wants a refund without having to return it? Ok.Thats pretty clear...

·3 years agoIn order to receive a refund through Money Back Guarantee you need to RETURN the item through the returns process. You can’t keep both the product and get a refund unless the seller decides to to just refund allowing you to keep the item.
Returns, items not received, and refunds for buyers aka Money Back Guarantee
janet9988
·3 years agoSince the item was directly delivered to your GD she could have simply returned it herself.
campanaelia
·3 years agoThere was actually a very easy solution.
Why didn't you just email the shipping label or the QR code to your daughter?
She could of then sent the item back.
bonjourami
·3 years agoYou have to return the item if you want a refund. The rules are the same for everybody.
