FYI American Girl and Barbie are two different dolls.
@redmodelt
FYI, no they're actually not. Yes, there is a modern line of dolls called American Girl. But in the world of vintage Barbie there are Barbies with a page boy hairstyle made in 1965 and 1966 that have been called the American Girl Barbie by collectors since the 1980s. Any collector of vintage Barbies will immediately know what you're talking about when you call one of these dolls an American Girl. And the doll in the OP's post is, in fact, one of these dolls.
It's not uncommon. Those are the rooting lines for a ponytail hairstyle. This doll was probably made when they were using up the last of the swirl ponytail heads.
