There are many of use wondering the same thing. Last year, eBay improved the background tool which eliminates the need to erase (or restore) areas of the photos, but once in a while the need arises. You can let eBay know your thoughts by providing feedback to eBay.
Depending on the listing form you are using, you may find a Tell us what you think link or Feedback link on the page. On my listing form, I can find that by clicking the three-dot icon at the top right of the form. (Yours may be different.)
