Why is my return request open until October 2, and will eBay actually step in?

I opened a return request on August 28 because the item didn’t match the description. The item was delivered on July 17.
The seller has not responded to my return request or any of my messages. It has now been almost 4 weeks.
My return page says that the request will remain open until October 2. Today is September 23, so there are only 9 days left.
My main question is: will eBay actually step in and resolve the case if the seller continues to ignore me? Or will the return simply close on October 2 without a refund?
The refund amount is $246.68. I don’t want to cancel the return because I still need my refund.
What should I do if the seller doesn’t respond before October 2?
