Why is my buyer not getting charged enough for shipping that eBay is charging me?

I just sold something and the buyer was charged $38.51, but then eBay wants to charge me $46.12, and I didn't change anything about the package details from the listing. How can this be so? Why didn't the buyer get charged more for shipping? Or why doesn't the shipping label match what the buyer paid?

An update, in case anyone is listening, and that is I was finally able to see where this other $8 is coming from, and it's a "signature upon delivery" charge. I did not ask for that, and maybe eBay did since the item sold for about $700, but if eBay mandates it for a higher priced item then it should be charged to the buyer as part of the "Buyer pays shipping".

And I saw no mechanism to remove this charge.

@dhermant Sorry for the delay in replying. Life has been busy.

If eBay is requiring you to a have a signature on delivery then you will have to absorb the cost. You can't remove it. Usually a signature on delivery is required when the total sale amount ( item price + shipping + sales tax ) is $750 or more.

It is a VERY good idea to have a signature on delivery for expensive items.

If you do NOT use signature on delivery then your tracking will not be proof of delivery. This means you would lose item not received refund requests.

Now you are aware so that in the future you can a bit to the item price to cover this fee in addition to postal insurance. Shipping labels only come with $100 insurance unless you pay for more.

Thanks for this, but whether or not it is a good idea for me to demand a signature, and pay for it, I really don't see why eBay did or does not include that in the prices they charge the 'buyer pays shipping', especially if eBay is forcing me to have it. It then becomes a de facto part of the shipping price and not something I need to roll in. Additionally, I did not know what the final sale price might be so how could I have known to include it or not?

Also, there was no real notice where and why this was coming and I had to sleuth through some details only AFTER I conceded and paid for the label.

In any case, thanks for confirming my suspicion as to the signature related to final sales price assumption.
