Why doesn't E-bay use the 15 Min Rule at the end of an auction?
The 15 minute rule is when a auction is ending the auction time is extended 15 more minutes from the last bit.
They use this on GUN BROKER.

It makes it hard to get a snipe in, for sure. That's just an observation, I don't know if it was eBay's reason. But here's the deal: Why would anybody want to sit at their computer, bumping up their bid a dollar or a nickel at a time for what could run on for hours?
Everybody agrees that the best way to bid on eBay is to bid once, for the amount that's the most the item is worth to you, and place that bid as near the end of the auction as possible. Well, you can't do the "near the end" thing with a repeating time extension, but you can still bid the most the item is worth to you and let it go at that.
Once you bid the most the item is worth to you, you don't care if the auction is extended all night. If somebody bids more than you did, you wouldn't have bid more anyway, because you had already bid the most you were going to. If your bid doesn't win, at least you have the consolation of knowing that other guy paid too much.

·1 year agoI got my first experience with auctions at horse auctions 45 years ago. They did not extend auctions at all. Your experience with one other online marketplace facilitator doesn’t mean it’s widely used. Trying to incorporate that into eBay would create a nightmare of epic proportions.

Mentor1 year agoOne reason is that eBay allows user to use automated bidding systems (snipe services) to make bids at the very end of the auction which can allow bidders a better chance of winning the auction. If eBay did what you wanted bidders could no longer use thee automated bidding systems since there would no longer be a specific end time.

Because that's not the way eBay designed the auction process that they chose to offer to users worldwide.

I assume "Gun Broker" is another online shopping/auction site devoted to firearms?
eBay is not Gun Broker.

Mentor1 year agoebay is available around the globe. The ending times are based on Pacific time. Therefore if the auction is ending at 4am to a buyer located on the other side of the world, it is unrealistic to expect that buyer to stay up in case someone makes a last minute bid. Everyone knows when the auction is ending, so can place a proxy bid to avoid staying up until the auction ends to make a final bid.
