why does return shipping cost more than shipping to the buyer?

I offer free returns. I shipped an item that I sold and the USPS label was purchased through ebay was $5.39. The customer requested a return. ebay charged me $7.00 for the return shipping label. Why??

@scarlet020100 USPS did increase their rates by 8% today, that might be part of the problem.

Here's how to set up your account so you can provide your own return labels.

I recommend setting up your return preferences to avoid a refund being issued prior to receiving an item ( as long as eBay is not asked to step in by the buyer) and so you can provide your own return shipping label that has insurance.

1. Go to your return Preferences on turn on the option to require an RMA.

2. Provide your own pre-paid label

I would buy the return shipping label on Pirateship.com and upload it to the return cause so that you have insurance if the item is lost or damaged in return shipment. eBay return labels do NOT come with insurance.

When using your own carrier, make sure to upload the label and tracking details to the buyer’s return request. For items that have a total cost of $750 or more, signature confirmation is required.

Here’s how to send your own label from the View return details section:

Select Upload a shipping label and then the upload image icon.
Choose the label you want to send to your buyer.
Select your carrier and enter the tracking number.
