Why does Ebay charge the buyer over 2X the amount that the shipping actually costs me?
It has been awhile since I have used Ebay, but I have sold a handful of items in the past few weeks and Ebay is charging the buyers insanely high shipping rates that are over 2x what they then charge me. when I buy the label. I have been refunding the difference to the buyers, because I do not feel good about it. It does discourage buyers from pulling the trigger on items though, when shipping is so much more than it should be.
An example is for an item that I just sold, Ebay charged the buyer $21.28 and then when I bought the shipping label through them it cost me $9.20. That is $11 the customer was overcharged.
I know some people will say to just shut my mouth and keep the money and that it is more profit for me, but I really feel like it decreases sales overall. I know it would keep me from buying items.
Also, I am not looking to include free shipping with my items. That is not fixing the problem, that is ignoring it.

By my math -- confirmed on a handheld calculator -- your customer was overcharged $12.08.
You are allowed to refund those $12.08 to your buyer. That is a great way to show your buyer(s) that you are an honest and trustworthy seller.

Are you sure you’re using the same carrier as selected by your buyer? I looked at your last item sold - ups was almost 2x usps. If your buyer selected ups, don’t change it without asking him - some buyers are very picky about the carrier they choose.

You can pass along a portion of or the full amount of the discount you receive for shipping at commercial rates. Many sellers keep some of that discount to cover the cost of packaging and selling fees on the shipping portion of the label cost and pass along some of it to the buyer.
You can adjust your Carrier Rate settings in your Account settings here:
