Why does a seller have access to my phone number after I place a bid on an item?

Mentor2 years ago@peteparts A seller should not have your phone number until you have paid. Did the seller some how text or call you BEFORE you paid?
Once you have paid the seller has access to your phone number for a limited amount of time. This is because some shipping companies require seller to put the phone number on the label.
The seller only has a disguised email address that can send emails directly to your regular email address for a limited time. They don't see your actual email to prevent spamming.

OP2 years agoI placed a bid on a vehicle, seller called me within 30 minutes after I bid trying to close the sale. I asked how he got my number and he said eBay gives it out. The item was not ending for another day so it was still active.

Mentor2 years ago@peteparts I didn't know it was an eBay Motors Vehicle listing, those do have different rules and this is allowed by eBay.
eBay Motors Vehicle sales are like newspaper ads the auctions are not binding, either party can walk away from the sale. The seller pays a listing fee EACH time they list the vehicle for sale that ranges from $19 to $79

OP2 years agoYou're saying that eBay motors sellers get access to bidder phone numbers if a bid is placed?. What about account privacy. Guess I need to change my phone number on my account to one that's not active anymore?.

Mentor2 years ago@peteparts I am not sure when eBay started this for eBay Motors Vehicles. However you MUST have a valid phone number on your account or you won't be able to use it.
My advice is just don't bid on vehicles as even if you "win" it doesn't mean the seller is required to sell to you at the price for vehicles. eBay Motors vehicle sales are not binding, as I said there are more like newspaper ads. The buyer and seller have to get together to complete the sale, inspection, and transfer the title.
