Why am I having to pay out of pocket to refund customer??

Beginner seller here. Had someone purchase something and then request a refund shortly after due to them noticing some flaws on the product. They requested a refund which I did right away. During the process, Ebay made me pay $8.75 out of pocket (had to add my own debit card info) to fully refund the customer. This is ridiculous. I didn’t even do anything and this all happened within a few hours and I have to pay??I voided the shipping label and didn’t see that $8.75 being refunded back to me. Is this the process for refunding customers? Paying for a voided label? Confused.

The shipping label refund will come about 21 days after you cancel the label.
The refund will be put back in your eBay account.
Sellers always need a back up credit card for selling expenses on their account. I know it can be startling at first, but there are times you need to refund from your funds
- If the buyer's funds are yet in available funds, you must refund from a card and wait for the funds to be available.
- If the payout has already occurred and the buyer returns the item

In case you didn't cancel the label, here's the process
- Go to Manage shipping labels: https://www.ebay.com/ship/labels/my-ebay
- Find the item you'd like to cancel the shipping label for, then from the Actions column, select CANCEL.
- Choose your reason for canceling the label.
- Select Cancel shipping label.
You have 28 days to cancel a label. The refund will come about 21 days after you cancel.
